When Did It Become Sin?
It’s funny(?) how people’s view of scripture continues to evolve. Sometimes folks will believe something one way. But then if their life situation changes so do their beliefs. Let’s see a couple of these . . .
Some people believe certainctions are wrong/sinful prior to a person becoming a Christian. But after they have been saved these actions are no longer sinful. For example, Paul writes, “Do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God,” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. Some are now saying these are only sinful prior to a person’s salvation. But once a person is born again, not only are their former sins removed, but the lifestyle which produced the sin is now sanctified. You may think I’m kidding. I only wish I were!!!
Others believe that God does not hold a person accountable for behaviors practiced prior to becoming a Christian. (Yes, this is the flip-side of the above thought.) There are two problems with this thinking. First, it turns the “gospel” (a word meaning “good news”) into bad news! For if what they believe is true, then the worst thing we can do for non-believers is to try to convert them. For then God will begin holding them accountable for their sins, whereas beforehand they were “safe”(?).
Second, this has no basis for their belief in scripture. To the Christians in Rome, the apostle Paul wrote, “For there is no partiality with God. For all who sinned without the law [i.e., these are people outside a covenant/right relationship with God] will also perish without the law [notice, God is going to hold them guilty of sin even before they placed themselves under His rule]; and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law,” Romans 2:11-12. These are in a covenant relationship with God, and He will hold accountable for their sins, (see 1 John 3:4; Romans 3:23; 6:23).
Thus, the answer to our title question, is, sin became sin when GOD said it was! Man does not get to choose the timing of when something is or is not sinful. He only gets to choose whether or not he will humble himself before the will of God! That being the case, let us all “choose wisely”!

The Holy Spirit in the Life of the Christian Part 2
In a previous article it was discussed about who the Holy Spirit is, and to whom He is given. In this article it will be discussed about the obligations imposed upon those who receive the Holy Spirit.
It is a remarkable privilege to receive God’s Spirit in our lives. Such carries with it heavy responsibilities. “Know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? And ye are not your own:...glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). “If any man destroyeth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, and such are you” (1 Corinthians 3:17). Thus any habit or practice that would defile our body and soul must be cast aside, be it fornication, drug abuse, indulgence in intoxicating beverages, gluttony, tobacco or any like thing.
We must “walk by the Spirit, and...not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). By that, Paul means to order our lives by the Spirit’s instructions found in the Scripture. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, (makes) me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2). “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14). The Holy Spir it has given us the Bible to guide our path (2 Peter 1: 20-21).
Christians must put away all things in their lives that would grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:25). In Ephesians 4:17-5:14 the apostle catalogs that ugly list of sins we must put away if we would please our heavenly guest. At the same time we must fill the vacuum in our lives by bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self control...” (Galatians 5-22-23).
So we can see that when we make a commitment to become a part of the Body of Christ, it is incumbent upon us to be aware of our obligations as Christians with the Holy Spirit residing in
us to keep our temple pure. Donnie Landrum
