Eating and Entertainment during a Road Trip
Hunger and bore-dom are the en-
emies of family roadtrip happiness. Focuson food and fun tomake sure the
hours in the care arebuilding happy fam-ily memories. For travel snacks, choose healthyfoods that are less
messy. For example, opt for tiny sweet,easy-to-peel-and-eatClementine orangesrather than the big, juicy hard-to-peelnavel oranges. Orfreeze sweet seed-less grapes. Theywill help keep thecooler cool and tastelike little popsicles tokids.Bananas are anothergood, less messychoice. But be sureto toss the peels atthe next stop. Learnfrom my mistake:After a two-hour hikethrough the SouthDakota Badlands inAugust, you won’twant to get back ina car filled with thesmell of banana peelsthat have been rottingin the hot sun.For more substan-tial hunger, pack abag with bread, jam,
peanut butter andutensils for mak-ing sandwiches at arest stop. Fill Ziplocbags with homemadetrail mix made ofCheerios, raisins, and(a few) M&Ms.For quenching thirst, stick with water. Kidsmight prefer juiceor milk, but wateris good for themand less hazardousto your car seats.Stay green (and savemoney) by refillingbottles at rest stopwater fountains.
Entertain with EaseWith built-in DVDsand personal headphones, it’s temptingto let the TV babysitthe kids. But this isnot the best way tomake family memo-ries. Try books ontape rented from yourlocal library instead.
Plug the CD, cassetteor your iPod intothe car stereo andlisten together. Eventweens and teens canbe enticed to take outtheir ear buds andjoin the fun if every-one else is laughingto the antics of the“Sideways School”stories or debating aplot point in a HarryPotter book.Get kids involved inroad trip route plan-ning — and teachyour tech-obsessedteens how to navigatewithout GPS — byencouraging themto follow along ona paper map. Buylaminated maps foryounger kids whotend to have stickyfingers. The toughest part ofa road trip for kids, especially for kidsyoung enough to
need a car seat, isthe forced stillness.Stopping every twohours to let kids (andadults) stretch andmove is important. But you can get ev-eryone moving dur-ing those two-hourstretches of drivingas well.Try a rousing gameof head, shoulders, knees and toes.As the song nameimplies, you firsttouch your head, then shoulders, thenknees, then toes. Tomake it more fun, speed up the pace. Orgive each person aturn singing the song— in any order theychoose. For exam-ples, try toes, stom-ach, nose and head.

With each passing year, cars are becoming morelike smartphones and computers. From bigger, more full-featured digital displays to new ways tobring information and entertainment into thecabin, today’s cars are more connected thanever before.
PHONE FEATURESOne of the most common features on new cars —
even many bargain-priced models — is the abilityto link with your cell phone to make calls, playmusic and often access yourcontact list.
Using either a wired USB connection or a wirelessBluetooth connection, most cars have some way ofworking with your smartphone to communicate. Some will even read your text messages through thespeakers, operate via voice control and let you con-trol your phone using buttons on the steeringwheel.
APPSAnother trend is the extensive use of apps,
both in the car and through your phone. Many cars can run a limited number apps
through the car’s digital display. Streaming digi-tal music through Pandora is one of the morewidespread examples.
Some car companies are developing theirown smartphone apps, too, that let you interactwith your car through your phone. They mightremind you when your car needs service, forexample, or even be able to unlock your doorsremotely.
This is cutting-edge technology, so it varieswidely between each vehicle and manufactur-er. It’s by no means standardized yet.
WEATHER, TRAFFICAs wireless data becomes more commonplace, so
does the ability for your car to use that data tomake your life easier.
Some new cars — particularly those fromluxury brands — use real-time traffic data in their
navigation systems to automatically re-routeyou to avoid congested roads. A few use weatherdata to let you know about hazardous travelconditions ahead.
