RESTAURANT REVIEW:

Johnny Rockets

Students’ plans for Winter Break

By Brenden Paul 8TH GRADE

J ohnny Rockets is a 1950s-themed ham-burger and milkshake

restaurant that was founded in 1986 by Ronn Teitel-baum. The first Johnny Rockets was opened on Melrose Ave-nue in Los Angeles, Califor-nia. The franchise headquar-ters is located in Lake For-est, California. Recently I went to one of the two Johnny Rockets in Oklahoma, located inside River Spirit Casino in Tulsa. When we walked inside, I was displeased with the aroma of smoke and the loud bells ringing from slot machines. When we ordered drinks, I asked for a Chocolate Milkshake. It was very creamy and thin, which is the way I prefer it, so I rated the milkshake a solid 5 out of 5 stars. Then after looking at the menu, we realized they had a limited time special appe-tizer. It was Bacon Cheddar

Tater Tots. They looked pretty good until we start-ed eating them. The melted cheese was runny, and it reminded me of cheap nacho cheese. But the bacon was very crispy, and the onions were pretty good as well. I would rate this appetizer a 3 out of 5. For an entrée, I or-dered a Single Rocket Burger with special sauce and fries. The fries were very good, but the burger was not good enough to open a burger joint. It was not flavorful, and even the toppings didn’t add much flavor. To top it off, their “special sauce” was noth-ing special. I asked the waitress, and she said, “It is basically a thousand island dressing with a hint of barbecue sauce.” But it didn’t taste like that at all. I would rate the burger a 3 out of 5 also. I also asked our wait-ress how long the Johnny Rockets inside the casino had been open, and she said “since 2014.” All in all, this will be my only trip to this restau-rant. I don’t think the burgers were good enough for an entire chain built around them. The only other location in Oklaho-ma is located in Stillwater, but it’s not worth going to. Overall I give Johnny Rockets 3 out of 5 stars.

(DISCLAIMER: YOU MUST GO TO THIS RESTAURANT WITH YOUR FAMILY BE-CAUSE IT IS LOCATED IN-SIDE THE CASINO.)

W inter Break starts today! One semester

is in the books, and stu-dents are eager for a break. Recently I asked some of my middle school classmates what they planned to do dur-ing our two week break. Jon Morley said, “I might be going to Taos, New Mexico to go skiing and stay in a lodge for a week.” Jack Bluhm said, “I am going to Seattle to celebrate Christmas with my family.” Ishan Mota said “I am going to Dallas for Winter Break.” Mason Malloy said, “I am having Christmas at my house, and my cous-ins are coming in. It’s exciting because I have-n’t seen them in over a year.” Maddy Edwards said, “I am going to Branson, Missouri to visit some family members.”

Senor Williams said, “I am staying in Tulsa. I will be sleeping in extra every day and riding my moun-tain bike on the trails whenever I can.” Caleb Fuqua said, “I will be chilling at home, just watching movies and hanging with family.” And finally, Mrs. Dick-ey said “I will be getting ready for the second se-mester. I have to schedule all the Newspaper classes and get RenWeb set up. But I will also enjoy time playing with my grand-daughter.” So there you have it. There are some teachers’ and students’ Winter Break plans, some more interest-ing than others. I will be staying at home having Christmas with my grandparents and other relatives. I also may be going to Oklahoma State’s football bowl game, wherever that may be. I hope you all have a great and happy holiday. See you in 2017!

Where did the clowns go?

Mystery Person

By Andrew Jordan 8TH GRADE

I ’m sure you can all re-member a couple of weeks back when the

only thing people could talk about was the “creepy clown epidemic.” All over the news, creepy clowns would be standing by the side of the road, or on a more serious note, threatening schools. But now they have dropped from the news. So where have they gone? First, I’d like to talk about where they began. It all started on Aug. 29 in Greenville, South Caroli-na. A few people in an apartment building report-ed a clown was trying to lure children into the near-by woods with candy. Ugh, creepy right? Well it does not stop there. For the next couple of days, more reports of the same thing spread throughout the Caro-linas and sur-rounding states. Even worse, a couple days later, clown accounts on social media (Face-book, Twitter, Instagram and more) started to post threats to schools saying very scary stuff. A couple of schools even had to be put on lockdown because of

these threats. Then videos on the internet started to pop up that showed clowns standing on the side of the road, or chasing peo-ple on the streets. That’s how it went for about a month and a half. There were many theo-ries why this was hap-pening; a cult or even promotion for the new reboot of the Steven King movie “It” that got out of hand. But now, everything has gone quiet. I have heard of no new stories or videos popping up about the clown problem. What happened? I think the trend kind of died out, and no one real-ly cares anymore. Hope-fully, the stories will not come back, and we will

be rid of this

prob-lem.

F or this issue, I de-cided to do a Mys-tery Person. Can

you guess who this is? Andrew: What grade are you in? Mystery Person: 7th grade. A: What is your favorite sports team? ?: The Denver Broncos. A: What is your favorite movie? ?: My favorite is “The Benchwarmers.”

Riverfield rocked the Cain’s formers have included Twenty One Pilots, Jason Boland and the upcoming Grouplove. Rock Band students from Riverfield Country Day School have been per-forming there for around ten years now. This year the date has been changed from January to Dec. 3. This year the concert was held on Dec. 3 and fea-tured 12 Riverfield bands — approximately 100 band students. Middle School and Up-per School bands per-formed. The middle school bands each played around three songs, while the high school bands played around four. The tickets that were

available at school sold out in a few weeks, and there was a full house in the Cain’s on that Saturday night. The band students performed multiple songs from artists such as Regina

Spektor, Band of Horses, Grouplove, Bleachers, Twenty One Pilots, and many more. The students did a wonderful job per-forming and showing their skills as musicians.

T he Cain’s Ballroom is a venue in Down-town Tulsa that al-

lows bands and other per-formers to show off their performing talents and skills. Cain’s actually has quite an interesting histo-ry. It was first established in 1924 as a place to dance, hence the name “ballroom.” Cain’s became very well known by featur-ing many famous artists, new and old. Some of the older country and western art-ists were Bob Wills, John-nie Lee Wills, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Tex Ritter, Kay Starr and Ten-nessee Ernie Ford. Some of the newer per-

Phone block in After School Club By Caleb Fuqua 8TH GRADE

A fter School Club (ASC) is a program at Riverfield that

allows students to stay at school after classes end each day in case their par-ents work late or are other-wise occupied. ASC always allowed phones and other personal devices during these free periods when students get to play games. But these have now been banned -- no person-al devices at all. In my opinion, this is outrageously unfair. But I decided to get other stu-dents’ and teachers’ opin-ion on this new rule. The first person I asked was 8th grader Erik Over-

gaard. “I disagree with it very strongly,” he said, “because if you finish your work, you should be able to have fun.” The next person I talked to was Brenden Paul, also in 8th. He had an interesting view on the subject. “I think phones should be allowed, but no social media. You know people be snapchatting.” I then interviewed two girls who are occasionally in After School Club, Mad-dy Edwards and Elise Wag-oner. Elise said, “I don’t like it. For example, what if you get a call and can’t answer it because of the rule?” Maddy then told me her thoughts on the no-phone rule. “I think there should be a specific time

period when you can get on your phone, because some people like listening to mu-sic while working on home-work or watching the math video.” After interviewing these students, I asked Mrs. Waddel. She expressed her thoughts on the subject and proposed the following pos-sible solutions. “Maybe we could have a designated time period where people can get them out, like from 4-4:15. Also, another idea is if students have good grades they could have them out.” I think these are valuable ideas. In my opinion, this rule should be changed be-cause some students rely on their phone to get home-work done, such as watching videos for math and re-searching other topics.

Phones are not allowed anymore in After School Club.

Cabin lunches: a good idea?

By Jack Jones 8TH GRADE

I f you are in River-field’s Middle School, you have

many events to look for-ward to such as Night-watch, Llamapalooza, Spring Trip and others. The most significant, of course, is the Fall Re-treat. During this trip, all students in grades 6 through 8 are divided into cabins, which usual-ly hold 8-10 students. You may also know that the cabin selections are not random. While there is no specific “code” on how the cabins must be sorted, they gen-erally follow these guide-lines. You are typically put with 1-3 of your friends, and the rest of your group will be people whom the 8th graders and teachers believe could potentially become your friends. This provides a per-fect opportunity for stu-dents to get to know each other. This is especially

helpful for new students and 6th graders. In order to keep these friendships going, a new rule was put into place that requires all middle school students to sit with their cabin group every other Friday during lunch. But should it really be required to split up from your usual friend group to eat with a preassigned group that you may or may not get along with? On Nov. 30, I asked two friends to help me conduct a poll during lunch to see what other students think about this. Of the 109 students in Riverfield’s Middle School, 83 answered this poll. The results were quite interest-ing. Approximately 63% of the students we asked said they disagreed or passion-ately disagreed with the cabin lunch rule. Approxi-mately 22% of the students said they agreed or pas-sionately agreed, and the other 15% told us that they had no opinion. The verdict is in: Less than one quarter like this new rule.

Free agents signing with new teams By Jon Morley 7TH GRADE

M ajor League Baseball’s off-season is here,

and that means free agents may be deciding whether to stay with their current team or go to a new team. Winter meetings are held in Arizona where former MLB players talk about the big names in free agents, deals, and which teams need to re-build. No current players go to the winter meetings, and kids are not allowed to go. Right now, I think the teams that most need to rebuild are the Minneso-ta Twins, the Atlanta Braves, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now let’s talk about free agents. Brett Cecil, a left-handed pitcher, was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals for four years at $30.5 million. Andrew Cashner signed a one year contract with the Texas Rangers for $10 million. The Toronto Blue Jays signed Kendrys

Morales, and the Washing-ton Nationals signed David Washington to a minor league contract. Yoenis Cespedes was getting offers from many teams but decided to stay with the New York Mets when they offered him a four year contract for $110 million. Dexter Fowler is a big name right now. He just signed with the Cardinals for four years. Edwin Encarnacion could sign with the Blue Jays, Rangers, Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals or Colorado Rockies. Justin Turner might go to the Braves or Dodgers. Aroldis Chapman is interested in going to the Braves, Rangers, Phillies, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Giants, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pitts-burgh Pirates, or San Die-go Padres. So it looks like a lot of big names that a lot of teams want to sign! Check on mlb.com to find out the latest news.

Dallas Cowboys’ 2016 season

I n this season of the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys are actually doing well! With a season of 11-2, Dallas is lead-

ing the other teams in the race to the Super Bowl. Players Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot are leading the team. Dak has thrown more than 20 touchdowns so far this season. Ezekiel, who is arguably the next Emmit Smith, has stacked up more than 1,392 rushing yards so far. The rest of the teammates are mostly good with the exception of Tony Romo. Tony can’t seems to walk ten steps with-out getting an injury. I’m pretty sure, though, that he’s going to the Broncos because the Broncos need a QB. So far Dallas has only lost to the New York Giants. They had an 11-game win-ning streak until the Giants messed it all up on Dec. 11. Dallas has three more regular season games: Tampa Bay on Dec. 18, Detroit on Dec. 26, and Philadelphia on New Year’s Day. Watch and see what the Cowboys do next!

Kahoot! — is it good or bad? The teacher can pick any topic, but usually we play Kahoot! in Math, and the topic is made by the teacher. You can make your own version of Kahoot! that you can play with your friends and other people. You just have to make an account first. People can make up nicknames, and there is a scoreboard after each question that shows the top five. And, after every question, it states how many points there are be-tween you and the next player in front of you. Kahoot! does have some negative points, as do most things in life. For instance, sometimes it can kick you off for no reason.

Sometimes the person who created the quiz can get the question wrong. Andrew, Erik and I were playing Kahoot!, and the answer we knew was right was wrong . Kahoot! could be out of date, or not updated regularly. All in all, I think Ka-

hoot! is a fun game. Every-one always loves playing it, even if they come in last or do not do very good. Kahoot! is a great online quiz game that I recommend you play. Ask your teacher to play it sometime if you aren’t doing anything in the class that day.

By Jack Bluhm 8TH GRADE

K ahoot! is an online trivia game that we love to play here at

Riverfield. The object of the game is to get as many points as pos-sible. You earn points by getting the answers right. If you are the first one to an-swer correctly then you can earn bonus points, too. Teachers can pull up the questions, and you are given four options: a red triangle, a blue pentagon, a yellow circle, or a green square. Kahoot! is fun because it is fast-paced and an adrena-lin rush of a game. There is a certain sense of pride you feel when you win or get in the top five.

O ne of the most popu-lar video games out right now is the car

soccer game, “Rocket League.” Released in July 2015, many players quickly bought it because of its uniqueness. The game is a team vs. team soccer game where you control your own custom-ized vehicle and try to score in the other team’s goal. You can play one vs. one, two vs. two, three vs. three, or four vs four. You can also play in four modes: practice, online, exhibition and sea-son. The game contains mul-tiple unique arenas includ-ing a giant fish tank and an ice rink. In September 2016, an update was released called “Rocket League Rumble,”

which allows players to use power-ups that greatly affect the game. You can choose from a multitude of designs, top-pers and colors for your cars. Another feature is called Mutators, where you can change the speed, gravity and ball shape. The game is available only on next-generation consoles, Windows and macOS, which is a prob-lem for some people who have an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. The game is rated E for everyone, and is only $19.99. I’d give “Rocket League” 5 stars out of 5, just because of the creativ-ity involved in it. I would definitely recommend it.

I shan is a 6th grader here at RCDS. I thought I would talk

to him because he is just beginning middle school. Ishan does so many things, and he loves ani-mals and nature. I’m here to let you know even more about Ishan Mota. Erik: How long have you been going to Riverfield? Ishan: I have been here for five years, including this one. E: As a new sixth grader, what has been your fa-vorite part about middle school so far? I: My favorite part is Science class, because we get to learn about inter-esting facts. E: What are your elec-

tives and why did you choose them? I: I chose Roots & Shoots, because we get to learn about nature and the eco-system. E: What are your hobbies and interests? I: My hobbies are building Legos, and I also like stud-ying animals. E: What is your favorite animal and why? I: My favorite animal is the kulan, which is basi-cally an orange donkey. E: What are you looking forward to do over Winter break? I: I’m going to Dallas to just have fun, and I’m go-ing to see my cousins. Thanks for talking to us, Ishan!
