A variety of activities are provided for students through our lunchtime Clubs Program.

Students can participate in sports training, fun games and fitness activities, Japanese or Art Club as well as music activities including bucket drumming and ukulele.

In addition, some of our Grade 6 students will be running a Dance Club on Mondays. We also have Collectors Club twice a week (see below), Board Games on another day, and our Discovery Centre (Library) is open every day.

CARD TRADING

Students are given the opportunity to share and trade their cards in a fair, supervised environment as part of Collectors Club - on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS.

We ask that cards are left at home on all other days.

*Donations of any cards would be most welcome - please leave at the office.

CAR CLUB—another club initiated by students, will be starting up soon and donations of toy cars, trucks and other related equipment would be most appreciated.

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Vio-lence is this Friday, 17th March

This annual day is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools, and encourages all students to 'take a stand together' against bullying and violence in the classroom and beyond.

As part of this event our students will be participating in activities in the classroom enabling them to further their understanding of what bullying is and how we can all work together to prevent it.

Parents are welcome to attend a whole school assembly at 2:30 in the MPR, with presentations from some of our senior students.

Visit the ‘Bullying. No Way!’ website - https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/*

For further information regarding our school’s policies and programs related to

bullying, please contact Ms Dowling.

JUNIOR UNIT

This week we begin our next transdisciplinary theme WHERE WE ARE IN TIME AND PLACE.

The Foundation students will focus on our local community with the aim of knowing we live in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. We will get out maps and be learning about Australian animals etc as well as discussing what we can find in Ballarat. We will then learn about the importance of our local community and have a visit from the CFA and a dental nurse in Term 2. We

will investigate who makes up our community and their roles.

The Grade 1 students have really embraced our new PYP approach to learning. Both classes have leapt right into the deep

end, inquiring into WHO WE ARE and showing off just how courageous they are. We have developed our own questions based on our main ideas (family, feelings, friends and strengths). We have decided to focus our action on kindness. You will

notice on display is a ‘Take What YOU Need’ wall. Please pay it a visit as well as our ‘21 Days of Kindness challenge’.

Becoming inquirers has been a focus in Year 2. Wonder walls have been created with many questions about the world we live in. We hope to find some answers throughout the year. We are beginning to look at the celebrations in Australia and how they

have changed as a result of migration. Keep your eye out for a permission form for the Year 2 excursion to Sovereign Hill.

Payment will be due before the holidays.

MIDDLE UNIT For the past 6 weeks the Grade 3 students have inquired into the central idea Positive relationships con-tribute to a harmonious community. During this time we created a Caring Wall, where students can acknowledge others being a caring person towards their peers. We have encouraged students to keep an eye out for caring actions at home and their homework this week was to demonstrate a caring action and write down what they did and why. We are excited to immerse ourselves into our next central idea Our Indigenous culture has changed over time.

This Week in Grade 4 we have finished off our Unit of Inquiry. We have looked at community, culture, influences and how these can impact our identity. We finished with a celebration of our learning and our newfound understanding of our identity. We have begun to look at subtraction and continued our focus on comprehension.

SENIOR UNIT

The Senior Unit has enjoyed a productive two weeks in the classrooms - with all students participating in the Good Vs Evil project for inquiry. Students have all selected topics of choice to inquire further about, to strengthen their understanding of how leadership can be used for good or bad and what attributes these leaders have. From Nelson Mandela to Osama Bin Laden, the children have been creating movies, posters and Power Point presentations to showcase their learning.

To further develop their skills in leadership the Grade 6 students have enjoyed a day at Lake Dewar Lodge today - where they have participated in team building exercises. The Grade 5 students have also enjoyed some leadership activities at school.

It is hard to believe that Term One is nearly over - so please book in for an interview in the last week of this term to discuss your child's progress.

VEGETABLE ART, ZUCCHINI SLICE, GENEROUS DONATIONS AND THE BEGINNINGS OF A

SEED BANK IN THE GARDENING KITCHEN … Our wonderful and very productive garden continues to supply us with an abundance of cucumbers, zucchini, toma-toes, silver beet, capsicum and herbs for harvest and use in our cooking program. This fortnight’s focus has been on ‘painting with vegetables’, where students have cut vegetables and herbs into shapes and/or used whole vegetables from our garden to make yummy edible pictures. Preparing and making zucchini slice has also been a hit and lots of fun. Our students in their reflection/memories books have posed many variants of zucchini slice such as … ‘I wonder if I added carrots to zucchini slice – would the carrots alter the taste of the slice?’

We need to thank Sharon and Mel for always looking out for our chooks and taking extra special care of them at night when everyone else has gone home. To Debbie and Michael Searle, Lyndall and Dave Allen and Kathy Brown and their families for generously donating much needed equipment to our canteen. Also we need to say a big thank you to Heidi Busscher for her very kind donation of plants for our garden. … Your donations are very much appreciated!

This fortnight we are starting our seed bank of vegetables and herbs by gathering and labelling seeds for future use in our garden. If you have herbs and vegetables going to seed or seeds you wish to donate – we would be very grateful.

And always remember - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – Sustainability rules!

Konnichiwa!

Our Japanese clubs have become very popular. Students have made origami animals and peo-ple, as well as Japanese inspired manga draw-ings.

Origami Club: Monday

Manga Drawing Club: Thursday

I encourage all students to attend.

Students in Foundation have really impressed with their knowledge of basic greetings and counting from 1-10. We are learning colours for the following two weeks. Students are listening to Japanese texts and using games and songs to reinforce their learning.

Students from Grades 1-6 will be re-visiting Hiragana (Japanese writing) and learning some new greetings in Japanese.

In the final weeks of term, all students will be cook-ing Japanese food. Should be “oishii” (delicious!)

PE: Mr. Tolliday

It’s been a big two weeks with an extremely successful House Athletics Carnival. There were some brilliant individual performances on the day along with great participation from all students. Congratulations to our Age Group Champions who were presented with their medals last Friday at Assembly and Waller house for winning the day with 14,030 points. We gave out a total of 1,261 ribbons demonstrating the importance of recognising great performances.

We have had 38 students qualify to represent the school at the Zone Athletics Carnival on

Thursday 23rd March at Llanberris Reserve. Students will be training before, during and

after school to give themselves the best opportunity to perform at their peak. We are

extremely proud of these students and excited for what they will do at the Athletics.

Notes from the Music Room We are off to an amazing start in the MONSTER Music Room. Have you visited yet? You are always welcome to come and have a visit, see our growing collections of interesting instruments and monsters or to see what is on the boards around the room.

In the Music Room… the Grade 3s have recommenced their recorder tuition, continuing on with the Recorder Karate Program they started last year in Grade 2. They have also been busy writing their own body percussion pieces using picture nota-tion.

The Grade 4s have started work on Cup Drumming, beginning with some basic rock beats and learning to pass the cup around the circle. They have also been busy exploring our new collection of Jon Madin inspired instruments, including the Marimbas we made at the music workshop at the end of last year, and

the Aggi Pipe Shakers (pictured below) keeping the beat and tossing them back and forth with their partners.

The Grade 5s are also demonstrating their awesome rhythm skills by writing, performing and recording their own 4 bar rhythm pieces and starting to develop their drumming skills on the Buckets. They have also really enjoyed singing Eye of the Tiger.

URQUHART PARK CRICKET REPORT March 1st Venue: Vic Park

I’d like to congratulate all our boys for a wonderful season. It was a privilege to see them enjoying their time together, and the team spirit which never wavered.

I have personally loved being part of our team and hope you’ll all be back for the 2017-18 season begin-ning in November this year. Last but not least, a big thankyou to the parents who assisted .

Our final game was against Woady Yaloak. Our team saved their best until last, winning with a huge batting effort. Luke Rogers hit 5 fours; Ned Yeoman hit two in a row; Alex and Adley batted with confi-dence and skill. Ricky took two wick-ets, and Nick Robinson took a fantas-tic catch...again! A great team effort.

An Apple for the Teacher Competition Power FM has been holding a competition to identify Ballarat’s favour-ite teacher. The winning school will receive an iMac computer, which would be fantastic in our new Discovery Centre. All of our teachers are fantastic and several were nominated as part of this competition. We have just heard that Ms Chanelle Pelchen has reached the Top 10, which is great for our school. Power FM has reset the votes and now the count is on. Thank you so much to the families who have been voting. You can visit http://www.powerfmballarat.com.au/win/apple-for-the-teacher if you would like more information or would like to vote for Chanelle. Let’s work together and try to win that computer for UPPS!
