Vikasa SoudhaThe Vidhana Soudha has recently cloned itself and its more modernist version sits to the south of the original. The ‘Vikasa Soudha’ was added as an extension as recently as 2005. This southern block houses more offices of the secretariat and is fitted with the latest amenities, while the structure of the building stays true to the original. The Vikasa Soudha is built in the same Neo-Dravidian style as its predecessor. Although it is not quite in the same majestic league as the Vidhana Soudha, this twin-building does add double the drama to the landscape. Ambedkar Veedhi, Next to Vidhana Soudha

Vidhana SoudhaThe Vidhana Soudha’s onion-shaped dome rises majestically over the rest of Bangalore’s skyline. Housing the offices of the State Legislature and the Government Secretariat, the Vidhana Soudha is also something of an architectural landmark. This neo-Dravidian edifice, built in 1956, is a fusion of four distinctive architectural prototypes – Dravidian, Rajasthani, Chola and Indo-Saracenic. The gleaming structure created with locally-quarried granite was built during the regime of Kengal Hanumanthaiah, chief minister of the former Mysore State. As you wander around the imposing Vidhana Soudha and take in its larger than life dimensions

– the towering domes, massive pillars, Rajasthani-style ‘jharokhas’ or balconies, archways and the grand stairway – do pay attention to the minutiae as well. The ornately carved frieze panels, pillars and doors are peppered with geometrical de-signs and floral motifs, reminiscent of the Hoysala sculptures in Halebid and Belur. As you take your gaze right to the top, you can also spy the national emblem of the Sarnath lion crowning the dome. While the Vidhana Soudha’s exteriors are open to the public, access to the inside of the building is restricted. Go here on Sunday evenings when a lit-up Vidhana Soudha makes for an elegant visual spectacle.Ambedkar Veedhi

Attara KacheriJust across the road from the Vidhana Soudha, sits a dramatic, bright red struc-ture which houses Karnataka’s State High Court. This 19th century brick and stone building originally housed the public offices of the British colonial government in Bangalore. In fact, ‘Attara Kacheri’ literally translates to ‘eighteen offices’, the number of departments that worked out of here. Built in the Graeco-Roman style with graceful Corinthian columns and dark-green wrought iron grillwork, the construction of this two-storied, ter-racotta-hued building was supervised by Commissioner Lewing Bowring, and was completed in 1868. An annexe was added on in 1995, which faithfully followed the original style of architecture. Watch out

for the statue of Lord Cubbon astride his horse at the front of the Kacheri. Do stop by at the Sheshadri Memorial Hall in the vicinity. Housing the City Central Library, this flame-red heritage building is similar to the Attara Kacheri in its architectural sensibilities. Vidhana Veedhi, Cubbon Park

Bangalore PalaceThis Tudor-style castle sprawls across 400 acres of the Palace Grounds and offers an interesting peek into the life of royal Wodeyars, the dynasty that ruled Mysore from 1399 to 1947. The Bangalore Palace draws inspiration from the Windsor Castle in England and lav-ishly replicates it, from looming fortified towers and turreted parapets to Gothic windows and sweeping arches. The em-bellishments in the form of floral motifs, fluorescent ceramic tiles, wooden carvings and painted ceilings are highly ornate. The palace is steeped in luxury as seen in the elaborately done-up Durbar Hall, the lacquered furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl and the rare Greek and Dutch paintings that hang on the walls. The origins of the palace go back to 1884 when it was bought by the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar. Today, the palace is owned by the current descendant of the royal Wodeyar clan, Srikanta Datta Nara-simharaja Wodeyar, who is also credited with renovating it. Don’t skip the palace’s public gallery which displays royal family portraits and historic photographs. The

picturesque palace grounds are also a popular venue for cultural shows and private parties.Palace Road Tel: 2331 5789

Tipu’s PalaceIn the midst of the chaos and din of City Market stands an 18th century monu-ment – Tipu Sultan’s Palace – a looming Indo-Islamic structure. Little-known and little-visited, this palace served as the administrative seat of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom, where the ‘Tiger of Mysore’ (as he was titled) retreated for the summer. It was Nawab Hyder Ali who started build-ing the palace in 1781 and Tipu Sultan completed its construction in 1791. Like all the other Tipu Sultan palaces, this one is simple and elegant, and made of wood and stone. What is interesting about this monument is that it gives the illusion of being single-storeyed, while actually spreading across two floors. The façade of the palace is replete with pillars — 160 fluted, wooden pillars to be precise, with some of them reaching all the way up to the upper storey. Cusped arches and brackets spring off these columns. The ground floor houses a museum of sorts, featuring interesting trivia about the statesman-king, Tipu Sultan. Paintings of the palace by British artist Robert Holmes are on display. The palace is poorly maintained, so you will have to use your imagination to view the palace in its former glory. Cubbon Park Bangalore’s legendary Cubbon Park can be described as three hundred acres of bewitching greenery in the middle of the traffic-raidden city. The park’s eco-system consists of jade lawns, indigenous flora and fauna, blossoming trees and thick bamboo groves. Responsible for giving Bangalore its famed sobriquet of ‘Garden City’, Cubbon Park was laid out in 1864 by Sir Richard Sankey (the chief engineer of the Mysore state) and was named after British Commissioner Lord Mark Cubbon. Over 6,000 plant species flourish in the Cubbon Park habitat, which also happens to be dotted by a multitude of flower-ing trees, including flaming Gulhomars, blush-pink Cassias and bright yellow Tabebuia. With its nippy air and wide expanses, the park is popular with nature lovers and morning joggers. But it is also a historical hotbed. Find quaint remnants of Bangalore’s colonial past as you walk through its many tree avenues and shaded groves – like the statue of Queen Victoria statue or the one of King Edward II. A walk through the park will also take you to past heritage buildings like the Attara Kacheri and the Sir Seshadri Memorial Hall. The bandstand, Bal Bhavan and the government aquarium are also set in the park. Open all dayAccessible from MG Road, Kastruba Road and Hudson Circle, Tel: 2286 7440,

Visveswaraya Industrial and Technol-ogy MuseumLocated on the edge of Cubbon Park, this museum gives visitors an insightful tour through the world of all things science and tech. Set up in 1962 to showcase the history of technological development in the country, the museum criss-crosses through wide-ranging topics like as-tronomy, popular science, automobile engines and aircrafts. A bevy of galleries explore the intricacies of biotechnology, dinosaurs, electronics, rocket science and fun science. The USP of this science cen-tre is interactive exhibits that show and tell. Named after the city’s most famous scientist and engineer-statesman, Sir M Visveswaraya, the museum is stimulating to kids as well as adults. Go here to en-gage with science in a light-hearted vein.52 Kasturba Road, Tel: 2286 4009, Open from 10am to 6pm

Government MuseumRight next door to the science museum is the bright red edifice of the Government Museum. Built in 1876 by Colonel Sankey, this relatively unknown museum features an assorted clutch of archaeological finds, some even dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. Spread over two exhibition floors and eighteen galleries, the museum covers the domains of geology, numismat-ics, sculpture and art. Motley exhibits from various periods in history are on display, from Hoysala sculptures, Chola bronzes and Rajasthani miniature paint-

ings to ivory carvings, Vijayanagara relics to prehistoric artefacts from the Neolithic period. The museum showcases south Indian heritage prominently with ancient jewellery and textile exhibits. The upper galleries of the museum are art-heavy. The collection of rare paintings in the Mysore and Tanjore traditions deserve special mention.Kasturba Road, Tel: 2286 4483, Open from 10am to 5pm, Closed on Mondays and public holidays

Indira Gandhi Musical FountainBang in the middle of Raj Bhavan Road is an unusual attraction – a multimedia show featuring lights, music and dancing fountains. With the backdrop of a park, these gushing fountains powered by a thousand nozzles move to the riffs of Western and Indian music, making fifteen formations in all. Two shows are put up everyday, from 7pm to 7.30pm, and from 8pm to 8.30pm.Raj Bhavan Road, Closed on Mondays and second Tuesdays

Gavi Gangadhareshwara TempleThis over-five-hundred-year-old Shiva temple was built in Kempegowda’s time. Today, it is a protected monument and an active temple still in worship. The remarkable thing about this ancient temple is that the Shiva linga that is worshipped here is set in the heart of a natural cave, or ‘gavi’ as it is called in Kannada. Other sculptural highlights are

granite monoliths carved with discs of the sun and moon, a stone umbrella, Shiva’s trident and an idol of Agni, the Vedic god of fire. Every year, a rare spectacle can be witnessed at this cave-temple – on the day of Makara Sankaranthi (a harvest festival in January), the sun’s rays passes through the horns of the stone bull seated in front of the linga and spotlights the inner sanctum for an hour or so. A must-see for temple architecture buffs, it is also believed that sage Gautama, one of the ‘Saptharishis’ or ‘seven great sages’ in Indian lore, meditated here.

ISKCONBuilt by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, this temple dedicated to Krishna and Radha, fuses modern architecture with traditional elements. Perched on the top of the ‘Hare Krishna Hill’, the temple complex soars over the surrounding landscape with trademark towering ‘gopurams’. One of the biggest Iskcon temples globally, the campus is large and airy with the main hall featuring a medley of deities from Balarama to Prahlada Naramsimha. An open theatre, a bakery and a Vedic Museum are also part of the temple’s offerings.Hare Krishna Hill, West of Chord Road, Rajajinagar, Open from 7am to 1pm and 4pm to 8.30pm

Jamia MasjidThis beautiful mosque looks almost

otherworldly in the midst of crowded jumble of KR Market. The all-white, five-storied Jamia Masjid has striking architectural features including carved latticed windows, floral motifs, and capa-cious interiors replete with Rajasthani white marble. Jamia Masjid was built in 1940 and is still a prominent mosque in the city, sometimes holding up to 10,000 worshippers at a time.

St Mark’s CathedralA prime historical address from Ban-galore’s Cant era, St. Mark’s Cathe-dral stands regally at 1, MG Road. Its 200-year-old life is rife with historical gems. The cathedral was built exclusively for the British Army posted in Bangalore as far back as 1808. Built in the style of 17th century English churches, and modelled after St Paul’s Cathedral, this cream-coloured cathedral’s dome infuses the city’s skyline with a touch of old-world drama. High Roman arches, exquisite stainedglasswork, and intricately carved woodwork make the church among Bangalore’s best-kept heritage buildings. There’s more — the cathedral houses one of the biggest church bells down south and a must-see German pipe organ. Go to St. Mark’s to witness a chapter of the British Empire’s rule in Bangalore. For in-stance, the brass tablets on the wall offer touching tributes from the city’s colonial days, including one of an English officer who was drowned in the Cauvery after saving an Indian workman’s life.

St. Patrick’s ChurchThere is more than a sprinkling of 19th century British churches in and around the erstwhile South Parade (present MG Road). The rose-pink St. Patrick’s Church, with its tall twin belfries beckon from a distance as you make your way through Residency Road. This church was not built for the British, but the Irish soldiers posted in Cantonment Bangalore. Built by a military chaplain in 1844, its best features include a sloping Mangalore-tile roof, fluted pedestals and circular ventila-tors with floral grazing. 15-K, Brigade Road, Tel: 2559 9863

St Mary’s Basilica One of the oldest churches in Bangalore, the legendary St. Mary’s Basilica is a spot of calm in the otherwise chaotic Shivajinagar. Located across Russell Market Square, the basilica had humble beginnings as a small chapel set up by a travelling Frenchman Abbe Dubois. The chapel was transformed into an ornate Gothic church by Rev LF Kleiner in 1874. The baroque structure displays vaulting arches, stained glass windows from Paris and Corinithian capitals with a profusion of bunched grapes. However, more than its architectural razzle-dazzle, it’s the powerful faith that this church invokes, which gives the basilica its special reputa-tion. Shrouded in mysterious lore, it is believed that the St. Mary here possesses

miraculous powers of healing. The story goes that prayers to at the basilica once quelled a plague epidemic that struck the city. Even today, belief in the powers of the St. Mary of Shivajinagar is over-whelming. Come September, thousands of believers flock to the basilica for an an-nual feast, dressed in customary orange. Ulsoor LakeOnce upon a time, Bangalore was a city of lakes. Although most of these have been lost in the quest for urban development, the Ulsoor Lake still stands as testament to the city’s lake legacy. Spread over a three-kilometre radius, the origins of the Ulsoor Lake (or Halasur Lake as it was formerly known) go back to the reign of Kempegowda II, a 16th century chieftain of Bangalore. But the lake in its current form was built by British Commissioner, Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring. Speckled with tiny islands, the picturesque Ulsoor Lake has been cleaned up from time to time. Boat rides are offered here. There’s a walkway around the lake, which is a favourite with walkers and joggers. The lake is best-visited in the wee hours of the morning. Just across from Ulsoor Lake is the Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha.Ulsoor

Sankey Boat ClubAnother major lake in Bangalore from the late 19th century, the Sankey Tank

was constructed by Col Richard Hieram Sankey to provide water to Malleswaram, a suburb in west Bangalore. While the 500-year-old manmade water body has been intrinsic to the ecology of Bangalore, it is also a tourist spot where you pedal and motor boat rides can be had across its greenish-blue expanse. There’s a park built around the lake, making this space green and well-oxygenated.Sankey Tank

LalbaghThis 240-acre garden in the heart of the city was laid out as far back as 1760 during the regime of military-statesman Nawab Hyder Ali. Lalbagh is something of a botanical wonderland, covered with swathes of indigenous and international flora – Hyder Ali imported plants from Afghanistan, England, Mauritius, Turkey, Africa and Persia to create the look and feel of a Mughal Garden. The garden’s at-tractions include the rose garden, a lotus pond, a floral clock, a bandstand and a mango grove. A glass hothouse modelled along the lines of the Crystal Palace in London, a lake and a quaint wooden bandstand are other Lalbagh landmarks. The garden is home to a flurry of birds, so take your binoculars along for an orni-thological expedition. Round off the trip with piping hot south Indian coffee and delicious masala dosas at nearby Mavalli Tiffin Room, a historic eatery in the city.Lalbagh Main Gate, Mari Gowda Road, Tel: 2657 3667, Open all day

PlanetariumThe planetarium came up in 1992, and is a major draw for kids and space buffs. On display are permanent galleries on outer space – exhibit halls display photographs of stars, galaxies and astronomical phenomena. However, it is the sky theatre that is the piece de resistance – a host of shows explaining the mysteries of the universe are screened here. A state of the art projector beams a life-like view of the entire night sky across the planetarium’s 15-metre dome. The theatre can seat 225 people at one go and there are two daily shows to choose from. Star-gazing sessions for amateur astronomers and educational lectures for students are also organised. Check the daily schedule of programmes before you head here – there are no shows on Mondays and second Tuesdays.Raj Bhavan Road Tel: 2226 6084

Shiva TempleA 65-foot marble statue of Shiva holds centrestage at this recently built temple on Old Airport Road. The ginormous Shiva idol is seen seated in meditation, with Goddess Ganga flowing out of his matted locks – an artificial waterfall de-picts her descent. A manmade replica of the Manasarovar lake with artificial caves and ‘Jyothrilingas’ make this temple a popular attraction among the religiously-inclined.Kemp Fort, Airport Road
