What more could you ask for? The Historical Society will sponsor a candlelight dinner and special program about the history of the Indian King Tavern on Wed Mar 24. The event will be held at Tavistock Country Club starting at 6pm with a cash bar. Dinner and the program will follow beginning at 7pm. Historian, Garry Stone, will debunk the myths and legends surrounding the Indian King, a cornerstone of the American Revolution in South Jersey. Stone works at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park and is an active member of Friends of the Indian King Tavern. The cost of the program is $42 for Historical Society members and $45 for non-members. • A man of few words, resident DREW SIOK quickly answered,
“Definitely the dinosaur.”
• Maple Avenue’s MATT SMITH answered for his family, “We like that there was a very special dinosaur found at the end of our street.” Matt is pictured with his 5-year-old daughter, CIARA.
• Meadow Drive’s TED and CAROLYN (8) SMITH became fans of the Indian King Tavern after taking a tour a few years ago. “The Indian King Tavern is great and so is the state park service that now takes care of it,” Ted replied.
• JOHN CARNEY, of Redman Avenue, appreciates the
connection modern-day Haddonfield has
with the past. “It’s just so historic. The area was settled in
1682,” he explained. John is pictured with
his son RYAN (1).
• GABRIELLE McKEEVER, currently a resident of Landsdowne Ave, grew up in Haddonfield. She loves “the detail and character of the historic homes ... especially the big old front porches.”

Twomajorcontracts,representingapproximately45%oftheBorough’sannualbudget,areduetobenegotiated.OneiswiththeTeamstersLocal177(publicworksemployees);theotheriswiththePoliceBenevolentAssociation(PBA)Local328(rankand file members of the Police Department).
■ HyDraNT FLUsHING During April, the Water Department will flush fire hydrants between 9am and 3:30pm on Tuesdays,Wednesdays,Thursdays,andFridays. For hydrant-flushing purposes, the Borough has been dividedintofourzones:1 SouthofKingsHighway,WestoftheSpeedline –April6,7,8,92 NorthofKingsHighway,WestoftheSpeedline –April13,14,15,163 NorthofKingsHighway,EastoftheSpeedline –April20,21,22,234 SouthofKingsHighway,EastoftheSpeedline –April27,28,29,30 The purpose of the program is to flush corrosive material fromthesystem.Duringand forashort timeafter flushing, water may be discolored.

ThemostrecentbidswereinvitedinJuly2005.Afterundertak-ingathoroughanalysisofthebids,theCommissionersatthattimedecidedtokeeptheservicesin-house. Now it is time to invite bids again.Typically, the Boroughconsiderstheprivatealternativewhenitsexistingtrashtrucksareapproachingtheendofaplanned20-yearlifespan.Buttheolder vehicle is not finished its years of service, it then becomes avegetativewasteand/orrecyclingtruck. Thebiddocumentsetsoutsixoptions,oneofwhichmatchesthecurrentlevelofservice:eachweekdayinthebusinessdistrictand one weekday in each of five residential zones. Another option wouldhavethecontractorhandleresidentialtrashandrecyclingonly,withtheBoroughremainingresponsibleforcollectioninthebusinessdistrict. IftheBoroughweretoprivatizeitstrashandrecyclingcollec-tionservice,PublicWorksDepartmentemployeeswouldstillberesponsibleforpickingupwhitegoods(refrigerators,etc.)andvegetativewaste. Preparingthebiddocumentsandevaluatingthebidsaremajorundertakings.Thecostcomparisonsareverydetailed, takingintoaccountallaspectsofpersonnelcosts,equipmentpurchaseandmaintenancecosts,insurancecosts,etc.,–notjustforthepresentbutforthelengthofthecontractandbeyond.(Typicallythecontractprovidesforextensionsbeyondtheinitialperiod.) TheCommissionersrecognizethatprivatizationwouldmeanthattheBoroughwouldnolongerhavethepeopleandequip-mentrequiredtoperformtheservicesrequired.Thus,theywillwant to be convinced that there will be significant savings over thelengthofthecontract,beforemakingthechangetoaprivatecontractor. ■ cHaNGes aT THe POLIce DeParTMeNT Formanyyears,achief,acaptain,andtwolieutenantshaveserved as the senior officers of the Haddonfield Police Depart-ment.Whenoneof the lieutenants retiredmore thanayearago, the Commissioners decided to not fill the vacancy. In part, itwasacost-savingmeasure. Recently,whenCaptainJohnBanningbecametheDepart-ment’s new chief, the Commissioners decided to not fill the vacancyintherankofcaptain,however,theydidreinstatethesecondlieutenant. During their meeting on February 23, the Commissionersadopted an ordinance increasing the allowable number ofcorporals from four to five.
