Spring is here and once again the Cowichan Valley Arts Council (CVAC) is gearing up for the annual Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show.

This year’s event takes place April 27th to May 1st, 2016 in PORTALS and the Cowichan Suite, inside the Island Savings Recreation Centre. Celebrating its 46th year, the Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show is one of Vancouver Island’s largest open art exhibition and sale.

The show is an important opportunity for artists and artisans of all backgrounds to showcase their best artistic talents. It is also a great place for art lovers to pick up an original ‘made on the island’ treasure.

Original artwork by students, emerging and professional artists, will be featured. All working in a range of mediums, including painting, photography, woodwork, pottery, textiles, jewellery, mixed media, sculptures and glass.

Artwork submitted to the show will be juried by three professional jurors. One ‘Best In Show’, five ‘Awards of Excellence’ and ten ‘Awards of Honour’ will then be selected. And of course the popular Peoples’ Choice Award will be voted on during the run of the show.

General admission is $5.00. Free to children 12 years and under.

Some peopleenjoy the simple pleasuresofshoppinganddininginanurban environment. If thatsuitsyourfancyyoucanfindit. Whether it’s Nanaimoto Chemainus or Duncanto Shawnigan Lake or any oneof themany points between youwilldiscover local shoppingandcafesthataretrulyworldclass.IftheoutdoorsaremoreyourgameVancouver Island is a paradise.From rock climbing to skiing,golfing, fishing or boating it’sall right here! For the trulyactive person you could,in theory, do 18 holes ofgolf in the morning andheadup for some afternoonor night skiing at MtWashington(whenthesnowgods cooperate of course).

How fun is that?Whenmywife and I movedto the Island in2002 Iwas earningabusiness

degree and thought thiswas a temporary stopalong the way. We hadevendiscussed the ideaofmovingbacktoVancouveraftergraduation.Thatwas13 years ago. Since thattimewehaveraised2boys

(work in progress) camped onthe beaches of the Island, takenwhale watching cruises, visitedthe old-growth rain forests,enjoyedcitynightlife,andtakenin the great outdoors. I cannotsee ever leaving the Island.

There is just too much tolove..andIhavn’teventalkedabout thegreatpeoplehere.PeopleonVancouver Islandtendtohaveauniquespirit,a can-do attitude.After all,the people that live herehaveliterallybuiltthecities,roads, and bridges. We allhave something we can

contribute. We all have a voiceand a part to play on this greatstage. One thing I’ve learned isyoucan’tjustwasteawayonthesofa, or expect that this worldowes you, if you want to enjoythisonelifewehavetoliveyou
