let us spoil you

WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 29 APRIL 2011 www.helloplett.co.za

The first Easter Games was a huge success and a whole lot of fun for all the energetic athletes as well as the fervent supporters. Even the weather played along, with the colder wet weather waiting for the last events to be completed. A huge thank you to all who were involved in organizing it all. A Big welcome to our first Southern Right Whales of the season and also to the family of Orca whales which have been spotted in the Bay. The cooler weather gave the sunburnt bodies a little rest and the shops a time to show their wares. The restaurants and coffee shops were a nice spoil for our visitors too. Still a nice little long weekend ahead. Enjoy your precious Plettime with us. Relax, unwind and revitalize.

Nou, selfs te midde van al die gebeure op die politieke front asook op ander terriene bly opvoeding tog die een focus wat leerder nie moet verloor nie Elke ingesrewe leerder moet persoonlike uitdagings trotseer en doelgerig mik na beter reultate op terreine soos geletterdheid en gesyferdheid ‘n heel nuwe wêreld maak sin en word ‘n openbaring vir ‘n afwagtende toekoms. favour and he finds himself made sheriff, tasked with tackling the local baddies and solving the water crisis. The film abounds with movie references and pays homage to some of the great westerns of the past. CAST: Voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill NIghy, Stephen Root JUST GO WITH IT A remake of the film which launched Goldie Hawn's career way back when, the rewritten script gives the audience a difficult time rooting for a bunch of liars. A successful dentist has for years being hooking women by pretending to be married. He now meets a sweet young thing, and his usual 'pretending to be married' game falls apart with her. The upshot is that he, her, and his dental nurse and her two kids go to Hawaii for a holiday where they enjoy the sun while he tries to maintain the charade. Naturally he finds himself falling for his nurse instead of the hottie he thought he was in love with. This situation is compromising the planned urban upgrading of the surrounding area as well as the integrated development of the communal spaces between the new library and the court complex. A possible high level interaction with the respective responsible state departments will have to be seriously considered to unlock the stalemate. All political statements and advertising needs to be paid for and the author clearly stated on it. We realise that it is very close to local government elections and pray for mature, sensible, transparent, moral and honest electioneering this time round. Thought for the Week. 1Peter 1:23 [ESV] "Since you have been born again, not of per-ishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God." The term 'born again' is a biblical expression, found four times in the New Testament. The first time it is used, it is mentioned by Jesus Christ when He addresses Nicodemus, the Jewish Pharisee, and says to him: " Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God" [John 3:3], and a few moments later Je-sus adds to the statement by saying: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." [John 3:5] However, many who call themselves Christians have never understood or experienced the new birth, the Bible speaks about. A large number of those I have spoken to sincerely believe that because they grew up in a 'Christian' home, attend church regularly, faithfully read their Bible and regularly pray, they therefore qualify to be called Christians and as such they believe themselves to be on their way to heaven. Another large group base their beliefs upon the fact that, coming from a long line of 'believers', they have been predestined by God to inherit eternal life as children of a special covenant between their parents and God, made at their baptism. Sadly, both these groups of persons have been deceived by the lies of the devil, expressed in hu-man philosophies and doctrines that are being taught in a great number of churches today - untruths which, if followed to the end, will not only deprive the person believing them of an eternity of fellowship with God, but will see them condemned to everlasting punishment. If there is one doctrine in the Scriptures that stands out in its

remains: "Why is this so essential?" Because as a result of the fall of Adam and Eve into sin, the Bible informs us, that we have all partaken of sin and that man became spiritually dead and thus needs to be 'resurrected' and be made alive again - something that happens at the new birth. How does one receive this new birth? By turning to God in repentance, by asking Him to forgive you and by putting your faith and trust in Christ - and Christ alone - to save you and by inviting Him into your heart. Everyone who does that today can rejoyce in the following words of Peter: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." [1 Peter 1:3] Henk. TV BROKEN and needs to be repaired? simplicity and clarity, it has to be the doctrine of salvation which states: "You must be born again!" As every person on earth has been tainted with sin and as such is condemned already, it is only by following God's precepts and commands that the penalty for sin can be forgiven and man can be reconciled to God. Nicodemus did not understand this and - like many today - was under the impression that he could gain eternal life by keeping God's laws and commandments and he asked Jesus the question: How can this be, how can one be born again? Listen carefully to the Lord's reply: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." [John 3:5-6] All of us, as human beings, came into this life by natural birth, through the flesh, through water, but Jesus, acknowledging this, says that after that has happened all need a 'spiritual' birth - a birth that takes place from above - not caused by the will or the actions of man, but by the Spirit of God. The question

Snippets for the Week There is so much animal abuse and cruelty taking place daily, with the emphasis on Asia at present. We are so fortunate that the cases we come across are mild in comparison. It is important that we continue striving towards zero tolerance regarding cruelty and abuse in our area. I visited the area in PH 1 in Kwanokuthula, where we sterilized in January & February this year. This area is now completely under control with healthy, happy and slightly overweight dogs. How great to see owners taking pride in their animals. Hopefully with time and resources, we will be able to get Kwanokuthula under control. I passed a bakkie with a trailer on the Piesang Valley Road on Thursday. Couldn't believe that they had squashed at least 5 chickens to a crate, almost 2m high, their feet sticking through the crates, open to the elements (it was raining). No officials in sight, CY registration. It would be dreadful if these chickens were taken all the way to Cape Town under these conditions AND where did they come from? On the same day I witnessed a cow being slaughtered on the grass outside the Sportsfield in Kwanokuthula. I cannot help but wonder if this is allowed - or do we need to remind ourselves that this is Africa! Healing Energy All great achievements require time! NSRI to the rescue Sea Rescue – Plettenberg Bay 24 April, 2011: Female rescued following injury during hike and 2 men rescued after being swept out to sea: Ray Farnham, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station com-mander, said: "At 12h16 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers were activated following reports from Cape Nature of a female fallen and suffered a suspected fractured ankle at Kwano Gatte, Robberg Nature Reserve, while hiking with family. "NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers responded to the scene aboard our sea rescue craft Ian Hepburn. "On arrival on-scene sea rescue members were put ashore where the female, 72 year old Dot Goetsch, from Port Elizabeth, was found with a suspected sprained or possibly fractured ankle and she was stabilized on-scene and carried, secured to a stretcher, to the parking lot at Robberg Nature Reserve, where she was handed over to family members who have taken her to a local hospital for further assessment and treatment. "At 16h00 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers were activated following reports of two males being swept out to sea at Natures Valley. "Our NSRI rescue swimmer Torsten Henschel, stationed in Natures Valley for the long weekend was activated while our NSRI duty crew launched our rescue craft Ian Hepburn, Airlink Rescuer and our Discovery Rescue Runner, and two off-duty NSRI volunteers, dr. Johan van Vuuren, and NSRI rescue swimmer Marty Reddering confirmed that they too were already in Natures Valley for the long weekend and they both responded to the scene. "On arrival on-scene NSRI rescue swimmers Torsten Henschel and Marty Reddering swam 400 meters out to sea where they rounded up a 30 year old male and a 14 year old male who had both been swept out to sea by rip-currents while swimming. "Our doctor van Vuuren, on the beach, directed the approaching sea rescue boats to the location of the rescue and on arrival on-scene the two males and

top five Surfski World Cup finishers said “it was the best lap course layout that I have ever raced” and managed to hold off the challenge from Tom Schilperoort to finish ahead in the end. Sean Rice who had to also overcome serious rudder difficulties also raced incredibly well to finish in third place. The 120 paddler’s that took part in the singles race were treated to calm seas with light winds during the four lap, 20km course with several river crossings and downwind sections, which provided for some outstanding racing and Surfski paddling conditions. “The Plett Easter Games is a great sporting festival and one of the highlights on the Plett calendar. To have the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge form part of the activities is awesome and we’re really pleased with the brilliant turn out of paddlers from all over South Africa” said Wayne Craig from Offthehook Events, organizers of the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge supported by PPC Cement. schools, which are fully resourced to empower learners to participate in the economic issues of this country. Mr. Donald Grant said it is good to formalize their working relationship with Bitou 10 Foundation to continue sustaining and improving the quality of teaching and leading in schools. He also urged parents to start making plans in order to ensure that their children are registered in time at schools. The department made major interventions to improve the teaching standards by creating opportunities for teachers and learners. For instance, the MEC said the department is investing a lot of money for testing of certain grades in the Western Cape as there is a strong need to measure where learners and teachers need help. The MEC said in order to improve learner performance at schools; they need to strengthen their ability to hold schools and officials to account. For instance, the recently passed Western Cape Provincial School Education Amendment Act provides an enormous opportunity to develop regulations with regard to performance agreements between the Head of Department, Principals and Deputy Principals. However, he also maintained that

will include an area for composting of organic waste and the recycling project will be enhanced to also assist people who make a living from the site. Regarding builders rubble, we are concluding discussions with a local quarry and all builders’ rubble will be disposed locally and therefore at less cost. We are also to-gether with Eden District Municipality exploring other alternative waste disposal mechanisms including conversion of waste to energy. To this end most of the preliminary work has been done and the DM is at a stage where it can make a decision on the service provider to undertake this task at no cost or risk to the municipality and the rate payer. We are confident that should this be successful there will be no need for transporting of waste any more. We have established, as is required by law, a monitoring committee for the closure and rehabilitation of the Robberg land fill site that includes all local stake holders including the local rate payers association and we are satisfied with work the committee is doing. Now this municipality is very serious about service delivery and we would want to invite people with better views to also come forward to assist us and stop casting aspersions on the ability of the municipality to do its work. We, as a municipality, pride ourselves and believe that we have knowl-edgeable ratepayers with vast experience gained in various industries and technical areas, which can advise us. It’s a pity that some choose the wrong platforms and modus operandi to interact with their municipality. We believe in co-operation!!! Letter via the Editor Plett Rubbish Dump So now the Plett Rubbish Dump is to be closed in 2 months time. We have all been informed over the last 8 years of its impending closure and the move to send all the trash to an incinerator at Mossel Bay. Has our Council not realized that when the idea was mooted, we had a train service between Knysna, George and Mossel Bay. As the choo choo has not been running for nearly 4 years s this option is no longer available. Perhaps it is the norm in Africa these days that there is no problem crisis until there is one. We all know the story of the sugar not being finished until the spoon is taken out of the bowl! What is going to happen to the builders rubble, sand, car tyres, washing machines, and garden refuse, etc. etc? This all cannot be disposed of in an incinerator. Recycling is already in full swing with all the collectors who occupy the dump collecting anything that can be sold or recycled. What will happen to these poor souls that make a living of what they collect at the dump? When the truck that collects refuse from outside our homes is full, surely it is not going to drive all the way to Knysna and back and then carry on collecting in the same street. Have they not wondered where all the extra money is coming from with regard to the huge fuel increases for road transport or will they just milk the cow three times a day and increase our rates of which, I am sure, the Rate Payers Association will predictably do nothing about. All the world has a prob-lem with disposing of their rubbish and we in Plett are no different but I am sure there could be an easier local solution as if the municipality can flatten a complete hill to

build RDP houses, then why can’t they find a position for a new local dump. Local Resident We referred this letter to the municipality and received the following reply: Dear Editor, It is extremely difficult to respond to people who purport to be raising genuine issues whilst actually are pursuing political agendas. Your reader subscribes to the perception that anything associated with Africa is mediocre and its inhabitants are incompetent. If anyone wants to raise issues of service delivery let us stick to that and stop raising political views because there are people and platforms for those engagements. Coming to the issues at hand, it is fact that the land fill site in Plett is full and we must all accept that. We must also accept that studies regarding the development of new landfills were conducted since 1992 and all of them are conclusive in that there is no more a suitable area in the Southern Cape for land filling except in Mosselbay and Riversdale. This means the option for land filling is not available. The next option is transportation. There are various modes of transportation which can be considered which is not necessarily restricted to rail only. It is a fact that this will be costly to the municipality and somebody has got to pay. Contrary to the assumption that nothing has been done over the years, studies have been commissioned for alternative land filling in our area to no avail including a cost analysis for transportation by road. Obviously transportation will take into account all issues involved including the preservation of the life span of our refuse trucks and the fact that the quality of service should not be compromised. We are planning to build a Refuse Transfer Station in Plett and then have a service provider to transport waste to Mosselbay for land filling and applications for EIA’s are at an advanced stage for this. Letter via the Editor Just a Thought ... Animal Welfare Project As we are aware, there is a desperate need for an Animal Hospital and Shelter in Plettenberg Bay. Because Kwanokuthula has the most dogs of all the townships, it should surely be considered to erect the building in the area opposite the Police Station. It is safe and secure, as many have experienced, who visit this area to re-new ID’s, Passports and so on. The Municipality has offered ground gratis, on condition it always be used for the animals. They will also contribute annually towards this project. With careful thought, I would like to recommend the following: 1. We erect a Hospital on this site 2. We employ a full-time Vet, living on the Premises (Xhosa speaking) 3. We build a Pound for lost dogs & cats 4. We provide a proper Shelter for the dogs & cats that are homeless 5. We sterilize animals on the Premises 6. Injured & sick animals to be treated on the Premises Because this area has a large Bluegum Forest behind, this should be secured and wooden shelters can be built between the trees. The older dogs can roam free and also enjoy their last days. The Plettenberg Bay Shelter should follow the “NO KILL” paradigm. The usual current paradigm at animal shelters of “adopt out a few and kill the rest” is left over from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and we need to move on. No kill requires a commitment that a shelter be a safe haven for needy animals, and not a killing field, and has been proven to work time and again, at various shelters around the country. As education regarding Animal Welfare is of the utmost importance, school children should visit. This would be the ideal place for them to gain knowledge on taking proper care of their pets.

FUNDING: As there is a Charity Shop already in place for the animals of Plett, I suggest any funds generated from this project, to go towards the upkeep of the Hospital. Scholars should pay R5 per visit. People adopting new pets should also pay a fee. Owners claiming their lost pets should also pay a fee. The Rotaries are always looking for new projects. Perhaps they would be keen on funding towards this vital project. A Principal needs to be elected to oversee the running of the Project. A Committee should also be elected, regarding the finances and so on. For this reason, there should be a Chairman, a Treasurer, a Secretary and members. Public monthly meetings need to be held, with Income & Expenditure available, as well as fund-raisers and new projects, as well as achievements, to be discussed. Paws and The Bitou CVC should join forces and 2 Inspectors should be employed in our area. Any animals needing attention could be taken into the hospital by the Inspectors. Should an animal be treated, the owner should pay towards this treatment. It is so important to sterilize as many dogs as possible, to enable us to put an end to unwanted dogs and inevitably an end to unnecessary euthenizing. By having a Vet on the Premises, at least 6 – 8 dogs could be sterilized daily. With Paws hopefully having a monthly mass spay day, this will also make a huge impact on the breeding. guineas do not make good moms. When there is trouble in the land they just take off on those spindly legs and the kids must be fast or take the consequences. A month or two ago I decided to take the feeding area into the vacant stand next to my house. At least there they had a bit of a chance as there are no cars or trees to be seen. When the grass cutting man arrived for his monthly cut I gave him all the instructions as to where he could cut and where he had to leave LONG grass. The population has increased this year because last year I never saw any teenage guineas. This year there were plenty. Last year I never saw baby peacocks – but I heard a rumour of a woman nearby who crushed all the eggs she found in her garden. This year there are many babies – but unlike mum guinea – Mgrs. Peacock only brings her chicks out when they have a sense of danger and speed. In my early days here, I found :The Lemon Grass” had pink bottles hanging in their trees. I found out this was to feed the sunbirds and hummingbirds etc. Well off I went to Harkerville market – dashed home – filled the way I was told to and believe me that was two years ago – I have to fill up these bottles everyday !!!! They live at the back of the house and the bigger ones in front of the house. My only real problem here is that when the babies are being to learn to fly – the do it mostly into my big windows – some I rescue when they have just been stunned, the other I have to bury. That reminds me – must go and talk to those birds about teaching their young to fly in safer places. CHATTERBOX

Life in Plett Having lived in Plett for a year in a rented house, we decided it was time to find our own pozzie. We looked around and at a few sites and then one caught my eye. I was far more interested in the bird life – guinea fowls and peacocks than I was in the site. Having lived in the big smoke for so long, the only wild animals we ever saw were the dead ones on the side of the freeway – or the injured ones but, that too is another story. Anyway I love having these birds so close and while we were building and I expressed my delight to the neighbours – apart from the irritated looks – I was also told very sincerely not to think of feeding them as ‘did I know what damage they do to ones gardens, and they make so much noise one cannot sleep.’ Well I could not really think too much about that and the minute we moved in we became “The Bird Inn.” Amazing how word travels in the bird world. I started off with about seven rather skittish guineas and a two lady peacocks and soon there were twenty guineas and four peacocks, including a very proud male. One would have thought he had found this new eating place. Anyway with these guys and gals came

the pigeons and then the uninvited guests – the neighbourhood cats and dogs and soon I had to think of another plan to feed them. It was great fun when I was feeding them outside my house because they never let me forget. At first they used to just mutter mutter outside on the road, to remind me it was foodies time. And then they got braver. The guineas got up on our wall and gave me severe guinea lectures about meal times. Unbeknown to them, I sleep with earplugs but it did not take them long to discover exactly which was my bedroom window and that is where they shouted from then on. The peacocks that were quite shy at first, got into the swing of things and moved closer everyday to the point that when I opened my garage door – the first thing I saw were quite a few pairs of grey horny looking legs. The peacocks had found the entrance to the Inn. With watering restrictions in place nobody’s gardens were doing quite well so I still do not believe that story about them ruining gardens. What I have discovered though is that in every set of guineas that appears - there is always one completely barmy one – that runs madly among the guzzling crowd trying to peck them. I shout at him/her ‘don’t fight girls’ and sometimes that helps for a minute. These birds big and small all know my voice and recognize my car. When I have been out for too long they spot my car and all hare along on their spindly cockeyed legs to get to me first. The pigeons line every vacant rooftop space and then I have to get on with the feeding. They also know where there bags are kept and will come over to look in. As I am walking out of the house I call out loud and clear ‘come on girls, it is foodie time’ and then the race is on from every direction. Unfortunately I speak to my two little darling dogs in the same tone of voice and the same wording. Sometimes I just happen to be talking to my dogs ‘out of hours’ and then next minute I have the whole place covered with excited birds. Due to the murders that began happening everyday I had to move the feeding place, as the birds eating their food at my front door meant that every cat and other killer in the neighbourhood had already hidden themselves under cars and in the trees waiting for their snax. I spent so many hours rescuing badly hurt birds and putting them into a shoebox and feeding them all through the night until I could phone my friendly birdman – Trevour -who came instantly the next day to take them to his hospital. During the breeding season last year we lost so many chicks either to cats, dogs, and hawks. One day you would see proud mom with a eight chicks and next day she would have two, and feathers all over the place. I had so many hurt chicks in my bedroom. One thing I can say is that

All this experience I had during the Easter weekend in the Easter games that was held in KwaNokuthula from Friday till Monday, an event that was funded by Bitou Municipality hosted by SAFA, the games consists of Soccer, Rugby, Netball and pool tables with winners awarded with medals, trophies and fat checks, what a good way of motivating youth to participate for positive initiatives, thanks once again to Bitou Municipality and local SAFA board for such a big and successful event. Anyone who had participated in crime activities this past weekend deserves to be looked in jail for many years as there was something to keep every body away from bad things, people from all communities of Plett were gathered in Kwanokut-hula sport ground to support their favorite teams .The pool table tournament won by shooting stars of Nonceba’s Tavern after beating cue masters from Disco’s tav-ern ,Rugby won by Celicias after beating Cape Arrows , Netball won by Bitou united took home price of R8 000 after beating Fabulous squad .Then it was the biggest sporting code in the nation soccer which consisted of under 13 ,19 ladies soccer and first team tournament with 20 teams, under 13

of May had once again won the Easter tournament as they did last year even in play offs they will play them for the second time as they well defended the Regional Castle league ,meaning that if they won this coming play offs will be in the same Vodacom league as the Boroka FC that beat Kaizer Chiefs out of Ned bank cup ,although they will be separated by Prov-ince .Oriented Bird won the tourna-ment after beating Black Stars from Crags by 4-1 taking home amount of R10 000 , trophy and med-als ,speaking to Bongani Yawa who scored the forth goal ,we said he is very happy about the win as it gave them the confidence toward their upcoming play offs ,although if they win they will face a challenge of transport and accommodation be-cause they will be playing around the Western Cape any volunteer who can assist them can call on this no:073 364 3122 Vincent Sikhundla is the Coach of the club. When people go to taverns, some of them there is one thing in their minds is to drink the hell out of booze, but there are those who go to taverns to socialize, networking, for business meetings and too many good and positive initiatives are the ideas that came out from tavern while friends having conversations over a bottle of a bear, brandy or even a whiskey. The example of those ideas are pool table clubs that are becoming the talk of the town in Plett as they host tournaments weekly and almost all of these clubs represent taverns such as Suhleka from Bonga’s tavern, Shooting Stars from KwaNonceba’s tavern, Cue Masters from Disco’s tavern etc. Another thing I learn about this fast growing sport is the discipline from the players as they don’t even talk during the game and the character from the empire who only communicate with the players in a

We received the following from one of readers.

New Criminal Threat: Beware This happened in

Glenwood, Pretoria. A man came over and offered his services as a painter to a lady putting petrol into her car and left his card. She said no but accepted his card out of kindness and got in the car. The man then got into a car driven by another gentleman. As the lady left the service station she saw the men following her at the same time. Almost immediately she started to feel dizzy and could not catch her breath. She tried to open the window and realized that the odour was on her hand — the same hand that she had used to accept the card from the gentleman at the petrol station. She then noticed that the men were immediately behind her and she felt she needed to do something at that moment. She drove into the first driveway and began to hoot repeatedly to ask for help. The men drove away but the lady still felt pretty poorly for several minutes until she could finally catch her breath. Apparently there was a substance on the card that could have seriously injured / incapacitated her. This drug is called “ Burundanga” and it is used by people who wish to incapacitate a victim in order to steal from or take advantage of them. This drug is four times more dangerous than the date-rape drug and is transferable on simple cards. So take heed and make sure you don't accept cards at any given time alone or from someone on the streets. This applies to those making house calls and slipping you a card when they offer their services. Burundanga is a drug made from a plant called either cacao sabanero or borrachero. It is used to drug unsuspected tourists in order to rob them. SANNITREE all your septic tank and sewerage solutions. Fat traps, waterless urinals & enzymes Mike Fermor Agencies 082 375 3043.
