Did you know that Friday 21 September is International Day of Peace - a day where the entire world observes a day of peace and non-violence and all organisations and individuals are encouraged to celebrate this day. On Monday 24th we celebrate heritage day, a day to celebrate our rich heritage, our wonderful people and the amazing natural heritage of our oceans, rivers, mountains, animal and plant life. Another super celebration is the opening of our fabulous new library in New Horizons on Monday 24th September Lots of fun and exciting happenings in the Bay in the next week or two—get out there and enjoy as many as you can. Also a number of Annual general meetings for associations that contribute a great deal to the welfare of our community. Do support them. We have more interesting and thought provoking Fish Eagle award contributions from students at Wittedrift High School and our Wittedrift High correspondent Enya shares a little more of the exciting inaugural Dr Evil Mountain Bike race and the Wittedrift Carnival Please don’t forget to vote for Leigh Dunn in the Citizen of the year competition. SMS 02 to 40881. if he wins his prize will benefit inclusive education and you will also stand a chance to win R5000 simply by voting. Have another fabulous fun-filled week in our beautiful Bay!

WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 20 SEPTEMBER 2012

Letter via the Editor This is very painful Last week on Friday a dead body of a newborn baby have been found dead by Bitou Waste Management in Bitou waste truck together with rubbish. This shows when Waste Management collect the waste at Kwanokuthula on Thursday at Phase 1. One of the rubbish bins was thrown inside an innocent child dead but they did not see a child’s body at that time. It was already late, was time to go home (off duty), park the truck at municipal work premises. Early in the morning on Friday they found a dead baby of a newborn baby. How can a person do this? Kill a child and throw it in the rubbish?! A child is not rubbish. It is the most beautiful gift that comes from God. No matter what the reason was, you never have the right to kill a baby and throw it in a rubbish bin. What you’ve done is sin. Do you know how many children have been raised by single parents? Today

they are healthy, beautiful and have normal lives just like any other children. When you don’t want a child, why not give him to a social worker, they can give him life by taking him to a care centre. Even though no-one knows who you are, God does and He will punish you for that. Hand yourself over to the police. All children have the right to live. Don’t forget, your child is your responsibility and they need your care and love. Hurt Resident STRUT CLOTHING 50% sale still on while stocks last, come have a look! Fairy Lights for Sale!!! SAFE A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an exam-ple of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving him to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tor-mented by the knowledge that he will al-ways be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed. But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, he impulsively jumps to action... and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. CAST: Jason Statham, Catherin Chan, Robert John Burke, James Hong, Anson Mount, Chris Saradon ICE AGE 4 The 4th in the series is releasing here ahead of its American opening. After the most persistent squirrel in the world man-ages to split the continents apart trying to retrieve his acorn, the friends find them-selves adrift on an iceberg. They bump into a pirate who promptly takes them captive, and need to work together with some new friends to escape. In between, there is

Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Charles Halford, Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth MOss LOCKOUT A falsely accused man is given a chance to redeem himself by rescuing the President's daughter, who has been taken hostage on a visit to a prison. “Hold my hand, oh hold it fast – I am changing” Edwin Muir

Change presents itself in many forms. In the sixteen hundreds, it was in the form of a Revolution – a massive change which altered the course of history. Nowadays it’s more often the subtle changes which seem to have a heavier impact, for example the way time ‘flies’ past with no intention of waiting for us. Time is a factor that not many of us consider, this is a sad fact be-cause that means that the majority of us do not make the most of every second we are spared with. The best example I could give you is from one of Shakespeare’s famous sonnets. He expresses how time had stolen from him, in his eyes, the most beautiful being on this planet – how watching this person age, and the end of their life draw nearer, he realises just how fast time goes by. In this sense, change can relate to having to say goodbye – whether it is due to death or marriage or simply just moving away. “Never say goodbye, because saying goodbye means going away, and going away means forgetting.” this is a quote made by Peter Pan, which, even though it is from a children’s fantasy story – it is a very

www.helloplett.co.za WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 20 SEPTEMBER 2012

true statement. Parents are probably the people who can relate most to this topic. They feel the need to hold on to their children when it is time to let go. This is the reason they cry so much on their child’s first day of school… and their first hair cut… and their first time on a bicycle. These moments are very sentimental and encompass their child growing and changing. It must definitely be difficult to watch the little girl with jelly-tot toes who could not cross the street without holding your hand, develop into an obnoxious teenager who wears short skirts and high heels.

The hard truth is: change can be a good thing as much as it can hurt. Nobody likes to change or grow old and nobody wants to witness it either, but sometimes in order to show your love and care for a person, you have to accept the change, and slowly – finger by finger – let go of the hand. The Crags Eco-Preschool celebrates…… International Coastal Clean up day On the 15th of September , volunteers around the world took part in the world’s biggest coastal clean-up. This year marks the 27th annual international coastal Clean-up (ICC) when people head to the beaches and begin removing debris from shorelines, wetlands and oceans. Each year there is a vast number of marine animals injured or entangled in debris and fishing lines found in the oceans and the aim of the clean-up is to remove debris from all bodies of water, heighten public awareness of the causes of litter, to promote water pollution prevention and to make a positive change in our environment. The Crags Eco-Preschool participated in the coastal clean-up by collecting bags of debris and litter on Keurbooms beach . The children took the litter back to school, separated it for the recycling process and used what they could to create a litter monster to “ scare away all the monsters who litter our beaches!!!” HOUSE TO LET: Trinity Farm, beautiful, unfurnished home. Well done to every single cook that en-tered this competition, not even the organis-ers realised how challenging cooking like this would be, so congratulations to each and every cook who entered, and nail biting finals took place between Bruce Noble and Sarah Murray who both prepared Norwe-gian Salmon provided along with many other amazing ingredients by Robberg Seafoods, Bruce emerged triumphantly and won; the trip to Ponto do Ouro, Mozambique generously sponsored by O’Lar do Ouro Guest Lodge , a Unilever hamper, a pot and pan set donated by Linear Casibella (Jason Ferreira), a R400-00 Robberg Seafoods voucher, a Robberg Seafoods cooler box, Runner up Sarah Murray received a night’s stay at African Array Lodges for four, a Robberg Seafoods voucher valued at R400-00, and a Robberg Seafoods cooler box. The day of the finals was great fun, local band 3BIT kept the crowd entertained and plenty of prizes were won, thanks to the sponsors of our lucky draw prizes: B Beauti-ful, LM in Plett vouchers , Nails by Jenna (Pedicure and Manicure) Market Square Vouchers, and vouchers from Robberg Seafoods and plenty of wonderful wines supplied by Rietvallei Wines, a dance voucher donated by Footprints Dance Studio in Mellvilles Corner. Lm in Plett’s manager’s Mitchell da Fonseca and Nicollete Wolfhaardt made up the most beautiful hampers for the sponsors. Watch this space as “So you think you can cook” season 2 will be back in Feb-ruary 2013 and we will be taking you around the world, so keep an eye out for our ads.

WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 20 SEPTEMBER 2012

“So you think you can cook” A tasty Success Like with event the support of sponsors is vital and so was the case with the recent “so you think you can cook” (Season 1) competi-tion that took place at LM in Plett over the past 3 months. When Luiz da Fonseca approached a couple of people with his idea for this com-petition he had no idea just how successful this event was to become. With the assistance of fantastic sponsors, namely: CX Press – advertising (Lezanne and Esther) and to CX Press journalist Timothy Twidle who got us great coverage – far and wide , Rietvallei Wines – (Bob and Elaine), The Print Shop – What’s New in Plett and Hello Plett (Charmaine and Cindy) advertising and printing , Unilever – Karen - prizes , Daron Chatz Photography/Film – (Daron, Jaymee, Julius and Siyabonga) the most amazing footage of every single evening , Robberg Seafoods (Karin and Chris,) – sponsored each cook to the value of R100-00, made up the cooking hampers for the two semi-finals and the finals, plus gave the most fantastic prizes , MC90.3FM – Sue van der Gaast - advertising and invaluable assistance with each evening, Protecx Workwear (Sarah and Clint Murray) – supplied chef’s hats, jackets and aprons , Zig Zag (Marcia Katz)– printing on chef’s attire, -

first prize O’Lar do Ouro Guest Lodge in Mozambique, BPM Designs (DJ Vix ‘O Moore) – logos, facebook, and general “behind the scenes” work, Roger Hart – who designed and made the cooking unit for LM in Plett, Paul Dean – Emcee extraordinaire – what can we say about Paul other than an enormous thank you and of course your event will be next. The competition kicked off with cooks Mike Pead and Roger Hart on the 31st of May and by the following Thursday every Thursday after that was fully booked. We had some fantastic meals during the contest, Nadia Beutler, Bruce Noble, Cheryl Anley, Jason Ferreira, Mike Pead, Sarah Murray and De-nise Tuffin’s meals , were just a few who really wowed the crowds and the judges with their culinary creations. The Deputy Mayor challenged once of his councillor’s from Kranshoek, Annaliese, to a cook-off to raise funds for the families of the victims so sadly taken from us by the sea on the 9th of August 2012, the Dep made a lovely home cooked chicken a la king but narrowly lost to his councillor Annaliese who made an interesting seafood dish, the evening was a great fundraiser with LM in Plett raising just over R4000-00 for the Bitou Lagoon Disaster Fund and the Beacon Island Hotel donated a cheque to the fund for R4300-00 accepted by a very emotional Deputy Mayor. The judges; some locals and some out of towners, picked on the evenings, as long as they did not know the cooks to try and keep judging as fair as possible all took their jobs as judges very seriously, some giving us and the cooks some interesting feedback. The audi-ences usually got to sample the cook’s food on the night and had an opportunity to vote but these vote’s were only used once in 15 weeks when the three judges all tied in their points.

Oriented Birds Newsfeed Dear all, this past weekend was great in terms of sport at large. One thing about soccer is that it is very unpredictable and intensive. The previous weekend we had another friendly against Kora Bayana F.C. And we won. Thanks again to Kora for giving us game time. This coming week we will be kick starting on the 21st of this month until the 24th Monday. We will soldier on with all we have and we will be giving every player a chance to play. As far as the SAB league is con-cerned, I met SAFA general secretary last week Friday and he told me that they are still waiting for SAFA for the kick start; when that will happen? Only they know, but we will continue to keep in shape. Till next time, cheers for now! have been opened by God. God has a unique plan for each one of our lives, a plan and a purpose that fits perfectly into God’s overall plan for mankind. If we follow God’s plan the results will be a life in which God is able to bless us and where He will receive much honour and glory. If we fail to acknowledge and live according to His plans we reap the opposite results and God is not honoured. In order to see God’s plan for us we need to turn to the Scriptures, the infallible, divinely inspired Word of God; there we will discover, just as in a road map, which way to go and what to avoid. Consider for a moment having to walk in the pitch dark through a minefield all by yourself – that’s scary and not something to look forward to; but now imagine walking through that same minefield under the same conditions with someone alongside who knows exactly where every mine has been positioned and who hold your hand and guides every step you take. That should bring comfort and peace. David, the Psalmist, has for me always been the one Bible character with whom I can most identify – he is so true to life in eve-rything he has done and recorded for us in his psalms. It is particularly in these writings that I have found so many words of wisdom and guidance, whether for times of prosperity or in moments of adversity and despair. And yet, we know that David – just like all of us – had some serious shortcomings in his life, some is-sues that would probably eclipse those that you and I have had to deal with. However, in spite of this God says of David: “I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after My own heart, who shall fulfill all My will.” [Acts 13:22a MKJV] and the reason God could say this was because David kept on putting his trust in God and trusted Him to guide him with His eye. God’s promise to guide us is still available today to all who are willing to put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ, who is “The Way, the Truth and the Life”. www.helloplett.co.za Your complete directory of who does what and where to find them in our beautiful Bay.

CAB Helping Hand receives large donation at Worthy Women conference Following the popular Worthy Women conference, Solidarity Helping Hand received a donation of R77 500 from the event’s organisers in support of various worthy projects of the organisation. The money was donated by the 5 300 women who attended the conference. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘women of influence’. Gretha Wiid, who presents the Worthy Women conference every year, urged the women to become women of influence by getting involved in Helping Hand’s projects to wipe out poverty. Wiid responded to the donation, saying: ‘As children of the Lord we always want to know where and how we can show Jesus to the world in practical ways. By giving bread to someone who is hungry, we become Jesus’ hands and feet in the world.’ Helping Hand will use the donation for the Lunchbox and Schoolbag Projects, the Sponsor a Child initiative and the Afrikaans Bursary Institute. ‘Eradicating poverty is a long-term project,’ said Dr Danie Brink, Chief Executive of Solidarity Helping Hand. ‘Helping Hand follows a policy of upliftment through training as the best solution to poverty. For this reason we are very grateful for every contribution that helps to sustain projects like the Lunchbox and Schoolbag Projects, Sponsor a Child and the Afrikaans Bursary Institute.’ ‘We are immensely grateful to Gretha Wiid and her team for their continued support and awareness raising,’ he said. The word translated “knowledge” in our text is the Hebrew “sakal” that can also be translated as “intelligence” or “wisdom”. Letter via the Editor, The MidWeek Market at Old Nick Village starts on Wednesday the 26th September from 12:30 to 5:30. We are so excited as this gives local farmers, producers, entrepreneurs a platform to sell their wares and gives shoppers access to fresh food which is grown free of pesticides, nasty fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives and additives. The only hidden ingredients you’ll find at our market are creativity and love, and you’ll taste the difference! With current world trends pointing toward a return to old school values as well as guarding and securing local economies, we feel that our new little market is of great significance. It makes sense to buy local, you keep the money here, you’re not incurring a huge carbon footprint by creating a demand for produce that has to be transported here from across the country/world and you know that the food you eat is straight-out-the-ground fresh! The MidWeek Market is a community grocery store, and edu-cation is key to helping make healthy decisions for ourselves and our families. We have a demo table every week where local service providers can showcase what they do from energy saving, enviro-concious products to recycling and community events. We also have space allocated to charities to come

We could go on and on! We have a stall doing healthy kids lunch takeaways for moms on school runs! We are close to town, have easy access parking, a restaurant, playground. It’s such an idyllic location, it’s convenient and it’s local! Come see for yourself on Wednesday 26th September! If your young artist is exhibiting at our art Exhibition, you may view their work anything during the day. For any queries please contact Mariella or Gen on 044 533 1048 or [email protected]

Crime Report CPF (Community Policing Forum)

PBCPA (Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Associa-tion) PLETT EAGLES (neighbourhood watch) I must say it is very pleasing to report that a lot more people of the public are becoming aware of the emergency number (082 251 8134) that can be called to report any out of the ordinary goings on. A lot more calls are being received which indicates that people are more alert and willing to report unusual activities in our neighbourhoods. Please keep up the good work and continue to

make sure that all your friends and family have the number saved in a very accessible place. The worst possible thing for a criminal is not knowing who is watching and taking note of his/her presence. All it needs is us as Plettonians or visitors to Plett to quietly make the call to the control centre and report the unusual activity without getting noticed or physically involved. If you would like to get more involved with the fight against crime and assist in getting Plett to a good level of safety, please send an e-mail to [email protected] giving them your contact details and someone will get in touch with you to let you know how you can become a part of this drive. A number of arrests have been made over the past few weeks by the SAPS with huge help from PBCPA and Plett Eagles. We do still need to be very conscious of locking our homes up and making use of the alarms correctly as well as securing our cars and not leaving Laptops, cameras and any items of value in easy view to the passerby. Be alert and stay alert. BEE RESCUE & REMOVALS Contact Arne 083 628 1191/044 533 9069

Letter via the Editor PLETT CRIME REPORT WESTERN CAPE A few weeks ago I read a police report in the local paper about how the public must protect themselves against burglaries. The suggested barbed wire, razor wire, security fences, burglar bars, etc. Do we have become prisoners in our own homes? This is my story of how I was robbed by my gardener over a period of several months. The loss I have suffered amounts to R85 000. Apart from the usual loot he would periodically raid my fridge, deep freeze and kitchen cupboards. Always just taking so much that it would not be noticed immediately. I am an eighty year old terminally ill man. I live alone with my dog and I am hard of hearing. The irony of the burglaries is that they were carried out when I was at home when the burglar alarm system was not activated. Unfortunately my house does not have burglar bars but in the past I found this not necessary as I live here permanently and I never had any problems. To have them installed now is an expense I cannot deal with at this stage. The thief would come through the previously cut fence via the neighbors’ property. It is a holiday home and Is

standing empty. He would then put his arm through the small bathroom window and open the window below and gain access into the house whilst I’m watching TV. After helping himself to my belongings he would leave the same way and closing the window behind him. He was well known to my dog, so he had no problem coming and going. When I started missing things I blamed the domestic and after several incidents dismissed her. The burglaries continued. The suspicion now fell onto the gardener. I started locking the individual rooms when at home. Then on one particular day, when the 2 nursing sisters came to see me on their weekly visit, we stood outside talking. That night I was robbed again. It was now clear that he had come into the house via the backdoor during that time and again opening a window to climb through later that evening. The police also

came and took fingerprints several times. But whoever the culprit was, there were no record of his prints. Then I got the gardeners fingerprints on his next working day the following week and took them to the police. Finally they had a match. On his next working day he was arrested in my garden. The court case is coming up on 18 October 2012. It came to light that he used a false passport and false address. I shudder to think what could have happened had I confronted him in my house on one of his raids. Would I have been just another statistic? I am writing this as a warning to other residents. International Day of Peace - 21st September The celebration of this day is intended to have the entire world observing a day of peace and non-violence and all organisations and individuals are encouraged to celebrate this day in an appropriate manner. To enhance the importance of this day, a 24-hour vigil for peace and non-violence, worldwide in every house and place of spiritual practice, by all religions and spiritually based groups and indi-viduals who seek peace in the world, is held. This global 24-hour vigil aims to bring to the attention the power of prayer and other spiritual observances in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict. There is still a lot of conflict and tensions amongst people in South Africa and this day reminds us of our need to work together and put our differences behind us so that we can ensure a safer future for all citizens. pioneers cricket club and they only have 1 (one) senior team and we alone has a player base of 25 to 30 players. The initiative of starting the cricket club was taken by me, John Koopman and Graeme Jasson and I did the necessary to contact S.W.D to send us the procedure of regis-tering a club and from there we contacted other players and held meetings and an executive was chosen and we were registered with S.W.D cricket board on 27 July 2012 of which one (1) of our play-ers nl: Jose Olivier attended the meeting in Oudtshoorn. All our players is from the Kran-shoek area, and we are the only cricket club in Kranshoek with one (1) senior team this 2012/2013 sea-son, but we are planning on regis-tering a second team and juniors in next 2013/2014 season. We practise at Kranshoek sports-field where we can only do physical fitness and a bit of fielding, then since (Sunday) 2 September 2012, we started practise on the Bitou Rugby field in order to practise on our batting and bowling, because we don’t have batting facilities on our Kranshoek sportsfield. Batting nets are very expensive and we do not have funds for it brought up. This 2012/2013 season, which starts 06 October 2012, we will be playing our home games at Pletten-berg Bay Primary school. If all goes well and we manage to get donations of any kind, we will be glad and then we can play and practise at our local field in the Kranshoek area. If there is any person or company that can make a donation to our club they can contact John on (044) 533 9449 or email [email protected] or [email protected]
