Following a succession of reveals made at ASPIRE4SPORT this month in Doha, the Qatar Sports Venue Master Plan (QSVMP) was presented to the public for the first time. Two years in the making, the plan audited 62 existing sports venues for usability and proposed 11 new ones, in addition to eight venues originally planned by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC). The plan was introduced by His Excellency Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, secretary general of the QOC, and presented by Abdul Rahman Al Malki, director of engineering at QOC. “Our focus since the beginning of this project has been legacy and ensuring that we avoid white elephants,” said His Excellency Sheikh Saoud. “We have watched coun- tries build large venues and struggle later with what to do with them; and our team has worked backwards, thinking first about how these venues can be of use in the future before planning their use during major sporting events.” Al Malki explained the process of putting together his country’s Master Plan and identified the factors taken into consideration, such as the cost of building a perma- nent new venue, which amounts to 12bn Qatari Riyals. He also said that the plan was put into place with the “Olympics 2024 in mind”. This month MEI is putting Qatar under the spotlight, the forthcoming host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and a country that is positioning itself as the leading sports host country in the Middle East.

Following a succession of reveals made at ASPIRE4SPORT this month in Doha, the Qatar Sports Venue Master Plan (QSVMP) was presented to the public for the rst time. Two years in the making, the plan audited 62 existing sports venues for

What does Qatar have to oer UK-based or other overseas investors?

“Qatar is categorically and unequivocally a major economic force and a true magnet for concrete investment due to its outstanding economic performance given the continued global economic uncertainty. Qatar’s economic GDP growth for 2011 was 14.1% and is the highest per capita income in the world expected to reach slightly above $110,000 by 2016.

Qatar’s successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 opens doors to tremendous investment opportunities. The government of Qatar has allocated 40% of its budget between now and 2016 to fund large mega infrastructure projects. Some of these projects include $50bn for developing new rail and metro systems, $33bn for developing Lusail City, $20bn on roads, $4bn on stadiums, $48bn will be spent to build air conditioned stadia, $77bn dollar on facilities for soccer fans, $5.5bn for a deepwater seaport, and a massive world class airport (one of the largest in the world) costing $17.5bn.

According to a study by Oxford Economics and Global Construction Perspectives, the Qatari construction market is expected to grow by an average of 12.5% a year over the next decade, compared with growth in European countries averaging just 1.7% to 2020.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s transportation sector is the biggest beneciary of the massive investment by the government, as it plays not only a major role, but a pivotal in the development of the social infrastructure of the country. The tourism authority of Qatar has orches-trated and organised many events.... Read more.

Supplying Events in Qatar: Immigration Focus

Matthew Amoils, director, ASG Immigration, provides details of the visa requirements for companies providing goods and services to Qatar.

In 10 years time, Qatar is set to host the biggest football show on earth, the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This is the biggest sporting event scheduled to take place in Qatar to date. However, the oil and gas rich country has for years been reinvesting its natural resource derived wealth into the creation of a knowledge based economy. Qatar is now home to El Jazeera and is seen as a liberal bastion within the Middle East and on the World stage. There has been heavy investment in sport and tourism and in addition to international visitors coming to watch these major events, there are many visitors arriving for the purpose of temporarily supplying goods or services to the spectators, event participants, journalists and others.

Qatar’s Visa Requirements

The requirement to obtain a Visit Visa before travelling to Qatar depends on a person’s nationality. Visitors from most Western nations can apply for and obtain visas upon arrival, as long as they are travelling by Qatar Airways. There is a dened list of non-visa nationals (see list below) eligible for tourist visas on arrival. These tourist visas are usually valid for 14 days and can be renewed for a further 14 days. There are also special rules in place for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council ‘GCC’ States. Citizens of countries not part of the GCC or listed below must usually apply for a tourist visa from their local Qatar Embassy or Consulate in advance of their travel.

Conducting business is not permissible when entering Qatar on a tourist or visit visa. If you intend to conduct business for example making sales visits or negotiat-ing potential deals you should apply for a Business Visit visa. This application must be led in advance of travel. The application is led with the local Qatar Embassy or Consulate and requires the completion of a prescribed form, payment of a fee and various support documents such as two passport photographs, the applicants CV, qualications or credentials and a supporting letter from their employer or Host Company.

It is also not permissible to work in Qatar if you are entering as a tourist or business visitor. This is regardless of whether or not the work is paid or unpaid. Foreign nationals who intend on taking employment in Qatar will require Sponsorship from the local employer or hosting company. Work visas are issued to employees of private entities, companies, and individual sponsorships, which need to be approved by Ministry of Interior.....Read More.

A recent survey reveals that nine out of 10 foreign tourists who visit Brazil want to go back again. Carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and the national tourism board (Embratur), the survey was based on questionnaires completed by 39,000 tourists at Brazil’s international airports and land border crossings.

Three out of every 10 respondents said Brazil had

exceeded their expectations. The friendliness of the Brazilian people came top of the list when the tourists were asked what they enjoyed about their stay: 98% gave 'hospitality' a positive rating. 'Cuisine' received a 95% positive rating, and 'public safety' 83%.

Most visitors to Brazil are from other South American countries (48%) or Europe (30%). Argentina is the country from which the largest number of foreign tourists arrive, followed by the United States. Brazil wants to increase the inow of tourists from all countries and is particularly keen to attract new markets such as Russia and China.

Embratur - also known as the Brazilian Tourist Board - is a federal, state-owned agency reporting to the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism. It was formed in 1966 and works exclusively on the promotion, marketing and supporting of the trading of services, products and tourist destinations of Brazil abroad.

Brazil: Why the North-East is the Place to beLucas Lacombe and Ricardo Demarchi from MEI show readers just what the north-east region of Brazil has to oer both events organisers and visitors when it comes to major sporting events.

Brazil’s north-eastern region boasts some of the most famous places in the country for tourists to visit. Its natural beauty, cultural diversity and regional cuisine oer something that can enchant all visitors. Porto de Galinhas, in Pernambuco, with its natural pools, white sand and warm water, and Jericoacoara in Ceará, with perfect blue waters and a breath taking sunset are among the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.

The region is set to feature heavily during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and at the time of writing, four host venues in the region were on average 62.5% completed. Fortaleza took the lead with 89% completion while Natal risked ‘relegation’ with only 33%.

1 Castelão - Fortaleza (89%) 2 Mineirão - Belo Horizonte (78%) 3 Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha - Brasília (76%) 4 Fonte Nova - Salvador (70%) 5 Maracanã - Rio de Janeiro (66%) 6 Arena Pernambuco - Grande Recife (58%) 7 Arena Corinthians - São Paulo (51%) 8 Arena Pantanal - Cuiabá (47%) 9 Arena da Baixada - Curitiba (45%)

10 Arena da Amazônia - Manaus (45%) 11 Beira Rio Porto Alegre (38%) 12 Arena das Dunas - Natal (33%)

Fortaleza

With 89% the work of Castelão completed, it there has been signicant progress in levelling o the eld and sanitation network. The next step will be planting the pitch grass. At the top of the building, the porches and scissors trusses are ready to receive the tiles sandwich, composed of two faces of metal and insulating foam padding. The stadium, which has 1,600 employees, is considered the most advanced among the 12 FIFA World Cup venues.

Salvador

In September 2012, the consortium responsible for the project began to hoist the cable coverage. The process was expected to last until the end of November. The assembly of the superstructure, consisting of columns, beams, slabs and seats at Fonte Nova, has been completed. The foundations of the parking space are at 85% completion and the ooring at 70%. The electrical network, hydraulic lifts and IT have reached 48% comple-tion. The stadium has 3,000 workers at the construction site and claims to be 70% completed.

Recife

With 58% of the work completed so far and with 4,000 employees, Arena Pernambuco had its rst metal pillar mounted on the roof and is likely to become the sixth venue of the Confederations Cup. Altogether, there are 68 columns supporting the roof of 20 000 m². The superstructure of the stadium, however, is 70% complete with the seating area reaching almost 62% completion. Having to prepare the basic infrastructure from road system to parking lots, the stadium has already sched-uled its opening game for 14 April 2013.

Natal

Qatar 2022 World Cup Preparations On Tuesday 6th November, Major Events International (MEI), held a brieng and networking seminar which sought to highlight both the opportunities for companies with an interest in growing a business in Qatar, with particular reference to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The event was opened by John Hawkins, until earlier this year our Ambassador to Qatar, who provided a fascinating insight into how Qatar has evolved over the last decade. Drawing upon his

vast experience in the region, John detailed how recent developments have had a huge inuence on both the opportunities within Qatar and also how the nation is now perceived by the International Community.

John was then followed by the rest of the speakers, who all gave a unique perspective on the opportunities that Qatar provides, while also explaining some of the challenges of doing business within the nation and how to overcome them. Particular emphasis was placed upon the positive perception of ‘Britishness’ within Qatar and the opportunities for companies to capitalise upon the pedigree that the UK has gained from successful delivery of the London 2012 Olympics.

The speeches were followed by a lively debate amongst the 50 or so delegates with an overriding consensus emerging that Qatar must now be viewed as a nation of vast business potential for UK rms. However, the speakers were quick to emphasise that maximum benet could......Read More.
