DannyD’Imperiomaybe thebestandmostfamousjazzdrummerfromthisregionofNewYork State. His career behind the drums hasincludedplayingwithmusicianssuchasTonyBennett, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Her-man, The Glen Miller Orchestra, The BuddyRichBandandmanymore.

Q.What is one or two of the highlights ofyourcareer?

a.PlayingandrecordingWoodyHerman’s40th anniversary Carnegie Hall concertin 1976. Another one was playing with theBuddyRichBandatCarnegieHallafterBud-dy’sdeathforhismemorialconcertin1987.Probably I had the most fun with MaynardFerguson’sband.

Q.Whatinspiredyoutoplaythedrumswhenyouwereyoung?

a.Istartedoutonpianoandthatdidn’tworkfor me, and then I went to trumpet and thatdidn’t work for me. The Dorsey Brothers Or-chestra,whichwasTommyDorseyandJimmyDorsey,playedatSkatelandInCortland,NewYorkin1956.IwalkedinthereandLouieBell-son was playing drums and I decided I wasgonnabeadrummer.IwalkedIthereandmylifechangedthatnight.Ibecameadrummer.Ididn’thaveasetofdrumsyet,gotmyfirstsetofdrumsthatChristmas,andIplayedmyfirstjobsixmonthslateronJune1,1957.

Leaving a legacyis a theme I’ve al-ready touched onin this column, butI find myself focus-ingonitagain.Thisyear I will experi-ence one of thosemilestone, new de-cadebirthdays,andat my age I acceptthatI’mmuchcloser

totheendofmylifethanthebeginning.Nottobeoverlygloomyormorbid,butit’sasimplefactoflifeandcompletelyoutofmycontrol.Weallgrow,andage,andeventuallydie.Butwhatwecancontroliswhatweleavebehind.

However you define yourself as an artist,thebottomlineisthatyoucan’ttakeitwithyou. So, it goes somewhere else. And I’m

talkingaboutalloftheartyou’veevercre-ated throughout your artistic career. Thepiecesthatsold,theonesyougiftedtofam-ilymembersorfriends,andtheartyouloveso much it is still hanging in your home orstudio.It’sallpartofyourbodyofwork,andthequestionis:isyourarthowyouwanttoberemembered?

Forme, theanswer isabsolutelyyes. Ihavea“bloodline”(alsoknownaschildren!)thatIleaveonthisearth,andtheyarepartofmylegacy,butasmuchasIcreatedthembygiv-ingbirthandraisingthem,atsomepoint,theygrowup,moveon,andlivetheirlifeastheyseefit.Theyareliving,breathingindividuals,and grow in ways based on their own indi-vidualchoices.Theywillcontinuallychange,andIdonot(norwouldIwantto)haveanycontroloverthem.

Ontheotherhand,aworkofartwillremainthesame.Yes,theindividuallookingatitcaninterpret it differently than the next person,but it will not morph magically from a childpaintingintoanadultpainting.Doneisdone.Theartistisincontrolofthefinalresult.Whenapaintingisnolongerinmypossession,andwhen Iamno longerhere, itwill stillbeex-actlyasitwasthedayIcompletedit.

MypaintingsarealegacythatIcancontrol.AndifartservesthepurposeofleavingalittleR Dixon on this earth after I am no longeralive,sobeit.Icanlivewiththat.

Q.Whatledtothedecisiontoopenyourownartgallery?

a. As an artist, I’ve entered my paintings injuried competitions across the country, andI’vebeen invited toexhibit inquiteanumberof galleries and museums. After attendingmany opening receptions and speaking withbothgalleryownersandjurors,Irealizedthatopeninganartgallerywouldbeaperfectnextstepforme.

Q.WhySenecaFalls?

a. I started to spend a lot of time in andaroundSenecaFallswhenmyhusbandandIbeganfixingupacottagethere.It’sanamaz-ingplace.There’sthehistoricalsignificance—itis thebirthplaceof thewomen’s rightsmove-ment—and it’s also the “real” Bedford Falls(fromthemovie“It’saWonderfulLife”).Ithasa pedestrian-friendly downtown with great

restaurantsandquaint stores (and freepark-ing!)It’sclosetothewineriesaroundthelakes(Seneca and Cayuga), and it has a strongtouristeconomy.

Q.Whattypesofartworkwillyouexhibit?

a. The first juried exhibit is, “By and AboutWomen:celebratingthefemalespirit”andre-ceivedentriesfromartistsallacrosstheUnitedStates.Thereareawiderangeofmediumscur-rently at the gallery: paintings, photographs,lithographs, sculpture, femmage, watercolor,penandink,andcyanotype.Thequalityoftheworkandthequantityofentriesexceededmyexpectations,andthe26artistsselectedeachinterpreted the theme inaverypersonalanduniqueway.

In November, the Homer MethodistChurch, The Homer CongregationalChurch,andotherindividualsworkedtoraisefundsfortheHomerMethodistFoodPantrythroughtheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHunger.

The Lunch Bucket Campaign to FightHungerplacedindividuallunchbuck-etsonthecheckoutcountersofstoresand businesses in Homer. Customerscouldplacedonationsinaslotineachlunchbucket.Thelunchbucketswerelabeledwiththewords“Fillthebuckettofillpeople’sstomachs.”

TheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHungerwasdevelopedtodrawattentiontotheneedsofhungrypeopleinourarea,andthefactthatevenpeoplewithjobsmayneedadditionalhelpfromfoodpantriesto feed their families. The vintage lunch bucket designs served as areminderofasimplertimewhenpeoplebroughttheirlunchestoworkorschoolintinorhardplasticcontainers.

Toprepareforthelaunchofthecampaign,boththeHomerCongre-gationalChurchandtheHomerMethodistChurchaskedtheirmem-bersiftheyhadlunchbucketstheycoulddonate.Therewereseveraldonations, but because tin and hard plastic lunch boxes or bucketswerehard tofindcampaignorganizerssearchedgaragesales,fleamarketsandantiqueshopsinNewYorkandinPennsylvania.Someofthelunchbucketsfoundwererustyandneededtobesandeddownandrepainted.Lunchbucketsneededtobecleaned,andmoneyslotswerecutintheboxes.Aftermonthsofpreparation,enoughlunchbox-eswerecollectedtostartthecampaign.

TheHomerMethodistFoodPantryhasbeenserving thecommunityfor well over 25 years, according to pantry manager Tiny Hughes.Besides the Methodist Church, other local groups who contributefoodandfundstothefoodpantryincludetheHomerCongregationalChurch,theHomerSeniorCenter,P&CFresh,theUnitedWay,Mari-ettaCorporation,andstudentsfromtheHomerJr.-Sr.HighSchool.

Donated food and hygiene supplies directly help individuals andfamilies.Fundsraisedprovidepeopleinneedwiththeopportunitytopurchaseamorebalanceddiet,aswellasadditionalfoodtosupple-menttheirmeals.IdeallytherewillbeextrafoodavailableforspecialmealsatThanksgiving,Christmasandotherholidays.

The park, with its historic courthouse, el-egant fountain, and towering trees, pro-videstheperfectsettinginwhichtoviewju-riedworksbytalentedartistsfromaroundtheregion,tohearthesoundsofoutstand-

Our owner and wine maker, Gary Barletta,grewuponthenorthsideofSyracusemakingwinewithhisItaliangrandfather.Gary’sstrongworkethicandpassionforwinemaking,alongwithhisloveoffull-bodiedredwinesandItal-ian varietals like Sangiovese and Barbera,come straight from his grandfather. CarryingontraditionisveryimportanttoGary,andhecontinues tomakeshiswine thewayhis fam-ilyhasmadeitforgenerations.I’vegrownupmakingwinewithGary,firstatourhouseand

Founded in 2013, the Cortland Crush isa baseball franchise in the Major LeagueBaseball-endorsed New York CollegiateBaseballLeague(NYCBL).The NYCBL is a summer wood bat devel-opmental league for professional baseball.Since 1978, the league has given collegeplayers, who have not yet signed a profes-sional contract, the opportunity to developtheirskillsatahigherlevelofplay,gainexpe-riencewithwoodbats,andbeevaluatedbyscouts.MajorLeagueBaseballfundsasmallportionoftheleague’sannualbudget.Teams play a 46-game regular seasonschedule,withgamesbeginninginJuneandending in the last week of July. All gamesare nine innings, with most doubleheadersscheduled on the weekends. The All-StarGameisplayedonJuly13thandtheLeague

Championship Series is played from July25thtoAugust3rd.Greg’s Field at Beaudry Park in Cortland,NY is thehomefield for theCrush.Both theteam’snameandfieldareatributetothelateGreg Partigianoni, whose nickname wasCrusher.Partigianoniwasa1975graduateofCortlandHigh,playedatSUNYBingham-ton, and coached at SUNY Cortland. Hethenspentayearas thefirstheadcoachoftheCortlandApples in theNortheastColle-giate Baseball League (now known as theNYCBL) before being diagnosed with can-cer and passing away. The Crush will con-tinue toembracehisworkethic, loveof thegame,andlegacyformanyyearstocome.
