One of my greatjoys as a parentwas experiencedon the soccer fieldwhen my childrenwere young. Formany years I vol-unteered to coachtheir teams andthoroughlyenjoyedencouraging thekids, sharing theiraccomplishments

andhelpingto taketheir individualandcol-lectiveskillstonewlevels.Withinthecontextofthegame,thereweremanylifelessonstobelearnedandIembracedthose“teachablemoments”whentheypresentedthemselves.InmyprofessionallifeI’veseenmanyofthoseskillsresurface.Albeitinamuchdifferentcon-textbutnevertheless,myleadershipstylehasalways been more like that of a coach. It’soneofthecompetenciesGodhasgivenme.

As a leader it’s important to recognize thatyoumaynotbe themost talentedperson inthe group. The diverse players on the teambringawealthof talentandasacoachmyjobistohoneandharmonizetheirskills,en-couragethemandprovidefeedback.Since thestartof2014,wehavehadgreatsuccessrecruitingnewteammemberstoCor-tland Regional Medical Center. Within thefirstsixmonthsof theyear, twelvenewlead-erscametoCortlandtoserveinvariousman-agerroles throughout theorganization.Thissummer we welcomed four new physicianswithawidevarietyofbackgroundsandmed-icalspecialties.CRMChasbecomeatalentmagnetforourcommunitybringingindividu-alsfromasfarasAlbany,SyracuseandBing-hamtontoshareinnovativeideasfortheben-efitofthepatientsinCortlandCounty.The team continues to expand as we growournursingteamsaswell.Opportunitiesareavailableinavarietyofareas. Ourdaugh-ter is a Registered Nurse and I am always

stractionoruseofcolor,Iknowthatmyworkwillbeappropriate.Originally,Ididn’tpayattention to location,but I finallygota littlemoreselective(realistic?)becauseshippingtoCaliforniacanbepricey!

Whenaccepted,Ialmostalwaysattendtheopening receptions. I’m very interested inseeing how the exhibit has been curated,whichhassuchahugeimpactontheoverall

visualexperience.ButIthinkwhatIlookfor-wardtomostismeetingandstrikingupcon-versationswith randomgalleryvisitorsandtheotherexhibitingartists.Listeningtoalloftheartopinions,explanations,andhistoryisthought provoking and enlightening. Thesespontaneousconversationsaboutcreativityoffernewandrefreshingpointsofview.

IthinkthereasonwhyIfindtheseopeningsso invigorating is that I prefer three-dimen-sionalhumancontactthatincludesvoicein-flectionandbodylanguage.I’mnotahugefan of social media, and I don’t believe inlivingmylifethroughthelensofaviewfinderor via a screen that reflects or records onefacet or sliver of any particular moment.I feel the same way about viewing art. Forme,experiencingitinpersonisanecessaryimmersion.Technologyservesmanypurpos-es,butusingatabletorsmartphonetolookata4ft.x6ft.,heavilytexturedworkofart

will not convey the energy and excitementthat emanates when viewing it in person. Idon’t believe a communication device canrealisticallyreflectthetruepowerandscaleofartwork.

Art is about more than what it says whenstandingalone.Itneedsaviewer’spresenceandemotionalreactiontoaddmeaninganddimension. It’s the same with other nones-sentials thatadd toourquality of life—suchasdessert.Showmeall thetantalizinganddelectableimagesyou’dlike,butI’llstillpre-fermycrèmebrûléeliveandinperson.
