weekends --Dec. 3/4. The folks at Grace Campus need our

help to keep warm this winter.

and will be repaid in full.”

ANGEL TREE 2017 Each year, the Social Ministries Commission

sponsors Angel Tree in order to help children

from low-income-families who have

extraordinary medical needs, disabilities, or

chronic health conditions. Angel Tree is not just

about delivering Christmas gifts. It is really

about sharing the Good News of God’s love with children and

families who are in need of extra help. The gifts purchased give

Christ the King Cathedral parishioners the chance to materially

demonstrate God’s love and personally share the gift of Jesus.

Commission members will assist you with your angels in the

Gathering Space after the Sunday Masses. The angels will include

the child’s name and some gift suggestions. You may select your

Angels on Dec. 2-3.

All gifts should be wrapped and returned on the weekend of Dec.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

WHY LIGHT CANDLES? When one enters a Catholic Church, one notices a stand

with many candles burning brightly. These candles have

been lit by someone who asked God for an individual to be

healed or watched over, as a petition for a particular cause,

or in thanksgiving for answered prayers. These candles are

not only a sign of love and concern for someone, but also a

sign of faith on behalf of the one who lit each candle.

Next week marks the beginning of the season of Advent.

The four candles we light each Sunday symbolize our wait-

ing in joyful hope for our Lord’s arrival into the world. We

are not only celebrating the “Adventus Domini,” meaning

the arrival of the Lord, but also recalling our baptismal

promise to keep our lights burning brightly.

During our Baptism the Priest said the words “… this light

is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. …this child

has been lightened by Christ. May he (she) walk always as

a child of light. May he (she) keep the flame of faith alive

in his (her) heart. When the Lord comes, may he (she) go

out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom

(“Rite of Baptism for Children,” Catholic Book Publishing

Co.) This Advent, may we keep the light of Christ (we were

given at our Baptism) glowing brightly through daily sacri-

fice and good works.

“In celebrating the birth of Christ, let us carefully consider

what his birth reveals about God. This is a God who comes

not to condemn but to give life. Once we begin to grasp this

life, then the vision of Isaiah, as remarkable as it seems,

cannot hold a candle to the light that will shine from us. (Fr.

Gary Caster, The Little Way of Advent: Meditations in the

Spirit of St Thérèse of Lisieux).

“We’ll still deck the halls, light a few candles and whisper a

few prayers toward the clear night sky, but Christmas re-

minds us to tend to the fires of friendship, of family, and of

community. This Christmas, let your own light shine by

taking a moment to acknowledge some special quality in

those you love” (Kathleen M. Carroll, A Franciscan Christ-

mas).

A Prayer when Lighting a Votive Light

O Blessed Lord, and my beloved Mother, Mary, accept this

burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for you. Like

this candle, I am ready to be used in your service, without

asking why and to what purpose. Even as this candle, I wish

to be consumed in the light and warmth of your love. Please

hear my prayer and, if it is your will, grant my petition. But

above all make me loyal and faithful to you in all circum-

stances of my life. Amen.

This Advent, the Spiritual Life

Commission would like to invite

everyone - families, singles, young

and old - to make ornaments to hang

on our Parish Jesse tree that will be

in the gathering space. We will

provide ideas, and even templates,

for you to use to construct your ornaments. You are also

welcome to come up with your own creative ways to

represent the scriptures for each day. It’s all up to you!

Hang your ornaments on the tree when you come to Mass

each Sunday, or come by the church every day to add them

to the branches.

We hope you enjoy not only making the ornaments and

learning about Jesus’ family tree, but seeing our parish tree

“bloom” and change from day to day during this Advent

season!

Go to www.ctkcathedral.org for more information, or pick

up a packet in the gathering space.

ST. MONICA’S MINISTRY

Saint Monica, model of patience, prayer and perseverance,

intercede for us, that we, too, may be awakened to the sacred, and

trust in God’s perfect timing. St. Monica’s Ministry meets at 3

p.m. every first Sunday of the month in the church parlor. The

next meeting will be Today. For more information, please contact

Jeanette Hardin at 797-4550.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

Sunday, Dec. 17

Following the 11 a.m. Mass

Family Activity Center

All CTKC parishioners and their families are invited to

attend! The Knights of Columbus Council #3008 will be

preparing and serving breakfast.

Visit Santa’s workshop to make a holiday craft! Bring

non-perishable food items or toiletry items to make care

packages and write a note to wish CTKC military personnel

currently deployed a Happy New Year.

CHRIST THE KING CATHEDRAL

LUBBOCK, TEXAS December 3, 2017

100 Things Every Catholic Should Know: Science Versus

Faith: Too many times, we have heard the eulogy of religion as

proclaimed by science. It seems odd, considering the numbers of

questions that science cannot or won’t answer. One of these is

WHY? Why create humans? Why do we search for something

bigger than ourselves? Human Consciousness or the Human

Soul? How do we know they exist? Why do we love? Why do

humans sacrifice themselves for others? Why do we think there is

good and bad? If we eliminate God from our lives and restrict

ourselves to scientific explanations, we are not liberating our-

selves. We are making ourselves ignorant-- “Ignorant is to ig-

nore.” There is certainly lots to learn from science and we have

nothing to fear. Science offers an explanation on how God ac-

complished what He did. But we must not forget science can’t

tell us everything in the same way a sculpture can tell us about the

sculptor. Science cannot tell us what is beautiful, what is good or

what is truth. It looks like we need faith after all.

Save the Date: Sunday, Dec. 10 “A Night Beneath the Stars

Dance” Ugly Christmas Sweater Edition from 7-9 p.m. for high

school students. Contact Rose for more details.

Volunteers: Do you love kids in small doses? Want to give back

in a small way? Love the behind the scenes planning and logis-

tics? Then we are looking for you. Youth Ministry is needing

volunteers on an as needed basis. Help with set ups, fundraisers,

special events and more. Pray about it and then give me a call

777-1320- so I can put you to work. Grow your faith, grow your

church and grow the future Christ the King families. Those that

raise together, stay together.

Music Ministry: Do you have a talent in music? Would like to

give back, but can’t commit to every Sunday? We have a desire

to provide music on a rotating schedule with those who want to

help. Please call me at 792-6198 or 777-1320 and let’s talk about

what we can create for the youth music ministry.

An elderly Mexican man makes his way to Mass in the early

morning twilight of Dec. 9,1531. He is a peasant, a simple farmer

and laborer, and he has no education. Born under Aztec rule, he is

a convert to Catholicism, and each step he takes this morning is a

step into history. The morning quiet is broken by a strange music

that he will later describe as the beautiful sound of birds. Divert-

ing his path to investigate the sound, Juan Diego comes face to

face with a radiant apparition of the Virgin Mary. Why should

this unlearned man be chosen by Our Lady to carry a

message to the Bishop and the world? Perhaps because she would

find none other as humble as Juan Diego. Encounter the mesmer-

izing story of Juan Diego (Feast Day Dec. 9th) and Our Lady of

Guadalupe “Patroness of all the Americas” (Feast Day Dec.12)

as told by Mary Reid on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Ben

Kasteel Hall located in the Family Activity Center.
