• Safe Drinking Water Act– Initially passed in 1974– Amendments made in 1986 and 1996

• A total of 102 contaminants are regulated under the Act

• All are reviewed every 6 years

• D/DBP Rule 2- Effective March 6, 2006– Very complicated rule – Applies to all systems that use water that has

had a disinfectant added

• LTESWTR 2 - Effective March 6, 2006– Cryptosporidium testing required– Covered finished water storage required

And yet more!!!!• Groundwater Rule - Effective January 8,

2007– Requires sanitary surveys of systems– Source water monitoring– Corrective action if violations are found– Compliance monitoring

• Total Coliform Rule– Reviewing to see if changes are needed– Possible outcome could be a new distribution

system rule

INFRASTRUCTURE

• Existing infrastructure is aging (30+ years)

• Study done by EPA looked at a 20 year period (2000 thru 2019)

• Funding gap will occur if spending isn’t increased– Projected at $102 billion for drinking water

• Predictions are even higher for wastewater
