Q: What are the Brewer’s Guild’s goals and objectives for its first full year at the school? A: We would like to raise awareness of Oregon Beer Culture. Many people in school are from out of state, and we would like to introduce them to the many fine aspects of Oregon beer, wine and spirits. We would like to provide demonstrations about how the brewing and fermentation process works. We will be available for teaching people how to brew, as well as providing advice and support for those brewers on campus. Last we will provide home brewed beer for events on campus. Q: What events are you looking to put on this year? A: We will first provide beer for the IPAs for IPAs (Intellectual Property Attorneys). This event will showcase the intellectual law issues surrounding the alcohol industry. Several members of the Guild have already brewed IPAs that will be ready in time for the event in November. Second we are plan- ning on a Brewing Demonstration sometime later this semester. We will bring our setup to school and brew a batch during school hours. It should be a fun diversion for those looking to avoid studying. Sometime next semester we are planning on getting a speaker to talk about the laws of alcohol, be it wine beer or distilling. In this event, we hope to provide insight into the laws surrounding the cre- ation and distribution of alcohol. Last, we are planning on inviting one of the local brewmasters or vinters to come to school to talk about setting up and running an alcohol-based business in Oregon. -Continued... see “Brewers” p. 3 WHAT’S BREWING? Trish’s Dishes: Be a Foodie on the Cheap!

Portland’s happy hours are a great way to sample some of what the best restaurants are serving, without crush-ing the frugal law student’s budget. Frugal long before law school, I’ve been sampling happy hours all over town for the past four years; here are a few of my favorites. Please note: the happy hour menus at these restaurants change from time to time - mentioned items may not be available when you arrive, but I can promise you will taste deliciousness no matter what.

N Portland: Lincoln Lincoln, along the N Williams bike cor-ridor, has a commuter happy hour that runs from 5:30pm - 7pm. Happy hour running this late means you can make it happy dinner. Small plates run from $2 - $7 and there is a $3 happy hour beer special for their rotating taps - or you can get fancy and have one of their excellent bartenders mix you up

As you probably know, Portland has a reputation for being a foodie town - we have some of the best restaurants in the country in our little city. But how’s an underfunded law student supposed to get out and try the awesomeness that is the Portland food scene? Two words: Happy Hour.

a cocktail. If charcuterie is your thing, their chicken liver mousse is delecta-ble ($5), and they go beyond elevat-ing the humble patty melt - a full size sandwich for a pittance ($7). Though it’s a bit of a hike from Lewis & Clark, if you live in North or Northeast, this is a great happy hour bet. Happy Hour Tuesday - Friday 5:30pm-7pm 3808 N Williamswww.lincolnpdx.com

SW Downtown: Clyde CommonI’ll admit I have a bit of a black hole for great happy hours in the L&C area of Southwest, because until I started law school, I probably came to this part of town three times. So I can only get to just barely SW, downtown, with Clyde Common. Clyde Common’s happy hour is consistently packed, and for good reason. The bar manager there, Jef-frey Morgenthaler, is nationally known for creative cocktails like his

barrel-aged negronis. For a mere $5 you can get a cup of the daily punch - you never know what you’re going to get, but you can be assured it’s go-ing to be scrumptious. If that doesn’t suit your fancy, there are four other $5 distinctive cocktails to try. Vegetar-ians can munch on the cashew butter and jam sandwich ($5), carnivores can chow on the delicious burger ($6). This happy works well for those of you who live in Northwest or Southwest - it’s not a far walk from the L&C Shuttle Stop - not far being a relative term, of course. Even better, it runs from 3pm-6pm every day, so those folks who get out of class at 3:05 can be imbibing cheaply before 4! Happy hour Monday - Friday 3pm - 6pm1014 SW Stark www.clydecommon.com

Industrial SE: ClarkLewisJust south of the SE end of the Mor-rison Bridge is ClarkLewis, a terrific little happy hour spot for fine food at bargain prices. I know not everyone loves gin drinks as much as I do, but if you’re like me, you’ll like the $5 martinis and gimlets. You can also get a glass of red or white wine for the same, or a local pint for $3, a steal. Happy hours foods range from $1 (no joke) to $6 - and include items like de-licious arancini and a fabulous burger. The food and ambiance here are really lovely. Happy hours runs two full hours from 4:30-6:30pm, and includes Sat-urdays. As a bonus, Bunk Bar is right across the street - so you can get your fancy on, then head on over to Bunk for good times and bloody beers all night long.Happy hour 4:30pm-6:30pm Monday - Saturday.1001 SE Water St www.clarklewispdx.com

Southeast: Hawthorne Hophouse. Okay, so there is nothing remotely foodie about the Hophouse, it’s bet-ter-than-average bar food. But a joint that taps 24 local (Oregon and West Coast) beers and prices all happy hour food at $4, plus has a Monday flight night deserves mention. The Hophouse opened a couple years ago on Haw-thorne, and has since opened a sec-ond location at 15th and Broadway in Northeast. If you’re Canadian or from somewhere North of here, you may be fond of poutine - this place has it, and it’s great. If you have no idea what it is - just give it a try. The chicken sand-wich is a deal for $4. If you’re a beer lover, the best thing the Hophouse has going for it is its Monday night half-price tasters. You can taste all 24 beers on tap (often hard to find elsewhere) for $12 - an amazing steal, and a ter-rific way to familiarize yourself with Portland and Oregon’s smaller brew-eries. Take a friend, because you can only get 12 per person. Hophouse not only has happy hour daily from 3pm-6pm, it continues from 9pm-12am and is available all day Sunday. Happy hour 3-6, 9-12 daily. All day Sunday.4111 SE Hawthorne Blvdwww.oregonhophouse.com

Brewers:

Q: What is the current involvement with the student body and the Guild?

A: We really just banded together in late Spring 2012, so we are still work-ing on where we will fit in. Much of our Guild is 3Ls, so we will definitely be looking on recruiting new Guild-members to carry on the tradition.

Q: How do students who wish to get involved with the Brewer’s guild go about doing that?

A: Contact Mark Maher, Brady Deal, Alex Spinks, or Michael Kearney. We would love to be of service to anyone in the school. Q: What would be some long term goals for the Brewer’s Guild?

A: Establishing a law of alcohol class or reading group for those interested in pursuing a career in the field. Be-tween Oregon’s many microbreweries and vineyards, there is a lot of oppor-tunity and need for those trained in the laws. We hope to work to make some sort of training available to those interested.

Additionally, we would like people to learn how fun and interesting home-brewing and vinting can be. Learning

about our favorite alcohol beverages and pulling back the mysteries sur-rounding them is a key step in devel-oping a healthy drinking culture.

Q: Is there any additional information about the Guild you would like the readers to know?

A: All of us are passionate about our hobby, and we will chat your ears off if you give us the opportunity. Ask as questions anytime! We would also be more than happy to help anyone get started or loan out equipment.

Following their founding year the Brewer’s Guild is looking to grow and make the group a staple in the law school community. Keep a look out for their events in their first full year at the school.

The first is a personal favorite; “Stereomood.” It is a free music streaming service with no ads which plays music based on your mood. Unlike Pandora which plays songs based on your past history of “likes” this application categorizes music based on mood, for example, “relax” or “good karma.” It is very easy to use and only requires a onetime log-in for hours and hours of great tunes. The second application was born out of necessity. Have you ever been with a group of friends in downtown and unsure where to find a great bar with a happy hour? Well, with “Happy Hours” you can quickly find all of the food and drink specials going on near you. Click through to see a photo of the bar or restaurant, and details such as the menu, location, amenities, as well as what other people have to say. This is a great addition to any student’s phone.

Finally, for those who have spare time on their hands “TED” is the app for you. It provides talks from some of the world’s most fascinating people including: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus and music legends. Each clip ranges in length from 5 to 20 minutes and there are over 1,100 to choose from.

So whether you are studying to good music, finding new and exciting bars or just sitting back and learning something new, I hope you get one of these free and amazing apps.
