LAYING prone just inside his door exhausted after getting off the bike, Nicholas Kastelein has experienced firsthand the power of the current world Ironman champion. The 28-year-old (pictured left) has just made Noosa his home for much of the year to train alongside and support the world’s best long-course athlete, German-born Olympic gold medalist Jan Frodeno. Every day Nicholas is by Jan’s side as he learns the long course trade after making the transition from professional Olympic-distance racing. After meeting Jan and his wife Emma (nee Snowsill) at a pool in Girona, Spain, they did some sessions together and began a training partnership. “I get smashed every day. But I love it. You know people would pay loads of money to be in a similar position,” Nick said. To Page 2 By GRANT EDWARDS What it takes to keep up with Frodo Photo: Glen Murray, Korupt Vision

“Honestly, I don’t know how Ifell into this position.

“I went to Kona with him lastyear and that was incrediblewhen I had the whole preparationwith Jan.

“We got to see the whole thing, and you get to see all the thingshe has to do after the race toolike the media commitments. Those types of things areinvaluable.”

After a trial inNoosa last year,Nick will follow Jan’slead and split timebetween theSunshine Coast andGirona, Spain. Hiswife Victoria has justarrived from the UK and hasachieved residency.

While challenged last year, theMudgee born-and-bred triathleteis beginning to reap the benefitsof his transition from sprint tolong distance.

Extra time and strength in thelegs means what they label “easythreshold” now seems moreachievable.

“It’s that zone where yourbreathing is labored and you areuncomfortable but you get thatfitness benefit and strength in thelegs. This year is a lot easier tomanage that,” he said.

“I don’t know whether youlearn to hurt more, but last yearthere were some sessions whereI was on my back on the floor forlike an hour and then you have toback it up again that evening orthe next day.”

A typical week would see thepair cover about 25-28km in thepool (where Nick appreciates thecompetition at the aquatic centre“where you have 13-year-old girls

kicking your arse”), between450-530km on the bike andrunning from 80-100km. Jan willalso throw in an extra bikesession.

While sessions are recorded, the data is kept private.

On the bike they spend a lot oftime in the hinterland and uptoward Gympie throughCootharaba and Pomona,Gyndier Drive for hills sessions,as well as the journey to BoreenPoint for efforts.

“There are no outstandingnumbers. It’s just beingconsistent,” Nick said.

“Every day is just tickingboxes. I’d love to say we run150km and ride 1000km, but it’s

just not the case.“Jan is just like anyone. He has

good and bad days. He’s verylevel-headed and realistic.”

When they ride it’s most oftenside-by-side, but efforts areridden to power which istraditionally when Nick sits in thedraft. Improved strength this yearmeans he has been able to sitfurther back out of the zone…butwhen Jan puts down thehammer Nick does his best to sitcloser and hang onto the world’sbest.

Both will have relatively similarrace schedules this year tomaintain comparable trainingworkloads.

Following about eight 70.3

races last year, Nick is nowfocused on Ironman 70.3Oceanside California on April 2,and then Texas one week later.

That will be followed by theprestigious Challenge Roth, whereNick will make his Ironman debut.

“I’m pretty happy with my format the moment,” he said.

“There have been somesessions where you start to doubtyourself. Like I go out and think ‘Ican’t hold this power’ and thentwo days later you hit a good andreally hard session, and these littlegauges provide good confidenceto tell yourself you are going theright direction.”

should know your own bodypretty well.

“I’m not such a technophile thatI need to relay all that informationthrough a Garmin, I can tell I amdoing alright.”

There is rarely a dull moment forJulia, who is now also a co-ownerof a lampshade making business. The business works with interiordesigners to create desired looksfor commercial and residentialprojects.

LOOKING across the picturesqueNoosa hinterland just aftersunrise, cyclist Julia Emblinremarks “it feels great to be alive”.

Riding about four times a weekand clocking up 250-300km in theprocess, the Noosa Heads63-year-old is in the throes ofpreparing for Japan’s NisekoClassic.

That event is the last of 14qualifiers for this year’s UCIGranfondo World Championships– where road races and time trialevents for various Masters agegroups will be staged at Perthfrom September 1-4.

While there is a contingent fromthe Sunshine Coast headed forPerth this weekend for otherqualifying races, Julia hascommitted to face the challengesof Niseko. There, the men under49 will tackle a 140km road race, but those over 50 and all womenwill face a 70km journey: “it will belumpy” Julia said.

Racing and Masters cyclingevents have become part of Julia’slifestyle, after moving to NoosaHeads at the age of 50 followingthe sale of her Melbourne café.

“I was retired and had plenty ofspare time. I have always ridden abike, ever since I wasfour-and-a-half in country Victoriariding to school,” she said.

That led to the AustralianMasters Games and ultimately theWorld Masters Games staged inSydney during 2009, where shewon the 55-59 women’s 41.9kmroad race (1:12:59) as well as the19km time trial after achieving anaverage speed of 37kmh(30:10.92).

“I thought when I hit 60 thatwould be the end of it,” she said.

“Sometimes I think I am goingto start playing golf…but I keepgetting on my bike. I just love it.It’s my passion.”

During 2012 Julia also won goldin South Africa’s road race as wellas the time trial, albeit againstlimited competition.

Then taking a couple of yearsoff the world stage, last year shemade a return and finished third inthe 115km road race atDenmark’s UWCT Final.

Over the coming months Juliawill be spending time in the saddlealongside Jo Stewart, who is alsocompeting in Japan. While usingcoaches and programs in thepast, her primary goal is to keepthe kilometres ticking over.

“I just think you have to do theKs and perhaps ride with a groupthat is better than you and that willtest you,” she said

“A lot of people buy powermeters, heart rate monitors, andevery expensive thing. I don’t haveany of that.

“I’m happy If I am still breathingand on my bike. By my age you

“Life’s tooshort you haveto fit all this stuffin,” she said.

This weekendwill see KentCarpenter andSue Dingas(pictured) headfor Perth’sGFWS Qualifier, along with former Coast riderMichelle Singer.

IMPROVEMENTS keep comingfor Coolum athlete JasonCheshire.

Training with the guidance andsupport of close friend NathanFitzakerley, Jason secured hissecond appearance at theIronman World Championship inKona, Hawaii after a personal bestperformance at Ironman NewZealand on Saturday.

Finishing ninth in the 40–44 agegroup with a personal bestIronman time of 9:44:47, hesnared the last remaining agegroup slot.

“The second guy did not takehis spot and then the next four alltook the spots. Then it rolleddown to me. Pretty lucky,” theowner of Infinit Nutrition said.

Competitors enjoyed nearperfect conditions over the ditch.

“I started the swim right next toDammo (Collins),” Jason said.

“It was funny because we raninto each other a few times until itsettled down. I got into a goodpack and swam solid for a PBswim low 57.

“The swim at Taupo is great. You can see the bottom the wholeway and you can even have adrink while you're swimming.

“It took a couple of ks for mylegs to come good on the run.

“First lap was okay, second lap Ifelt good and the third lap I wasgetting a bit tired and sore.

“The support I get on thecourse is unreal. It was a run PB of3.37 and it is going to come down

“I’ve run 8ks in the last monthand 140ks this year,” he said.

“At the swim start I got wateryeyes and nearly started cryingbecause I didn't want to be thereand didn’t wanna race. It took somuch mental strength to completethe race without pulling out as itwas on my mind all day.

“I was advised by a lot of peoplenot to race due to my legs.Thankfully Kate Gazzard The ProClinic – Sports Medicine gave mea glimpse of hope.”

RUNNING along Noosa MainBeach remains etched in mymemory.

Pushing across the soft sandalongside competitor Tony Bryanand his wife Jackie, marked theend of an unforgettable threedays.

Crewing for Tony at last year’sinaugural Ultraman Australiaproved to be one of the mostrewarding and enjoyableexperiences which surpassed allexpectations.

Jackie and I were there whenTony entered the water for his10km swim, and then followedhim for the remaining 505km onbike and foot.

There was never a dull moment,as we leapt in and out of theHyundai Santa Fe on countlessoccasions to provide nutrition andsupport throughout the journey.

Witnessing extraordinaryperformances from “ordinary”people was a privilege and anhonour.

Crew members play a pivotalrole in the achievement, andUltraman needs volunteer supportto assist athletes in this year’sevent.

There will be 42 athletes from12 countries taking part, andalready the excitement is building.

Major sponsors Tourism Noosa,Hyundai, Boost Juice and JT'sCoconut Essence have alreadycommitted, and race director TonyHorton was in Noosa last weekwhere he has receivedwide-ranging support.

“This year is a matter of building

and looking at what else we cando for the athletes,” he said.

“There is a bit of shock and awestill surrounding the distances.

“To have athletes from 12countries, we have exposedNoosa to another type of personaround the world.”

This year’s event will alsofeature André Kajlich. He lost bothlegs in 2003 after being hit by asubway train in Prague.

He is an Ultraman veteran,

having completed the Canadaevent and Ultraman WorldChampionships in 2014.

ADVENTURE racing is riding awave of popularity, and athleteswill descend on the SunshineCoast for one of the region’sfastest-growing events on March19.

The second of six events in the2016 Paddy Pallin AdventureSeries, the race includes four coredisciplines of mountain biking, trailrunning, kayaking, and navigationacross a variety of different anddifficult terrains.

To be staged at Wild HorseMountain in Beerburrum, this raceand the series is designed to offercompetitors the ultimateexperience, exposing them to theexhilarating phenomenon ofadventure racing.

Keeping competitors on theirtoes, a natural obstacle or two willoften be thrown into the mix, suchas a creek crossing or a mysterydiscipline.

Created for teams of two,

organisers said the races werefast, furious, and ultimately awhole lot of fun, especially withthe support of a teammate. Teamsnavigate the linear course, collecting checkpoints, to show

they have completed each leg.The course remains a secret untilthe day of the race though, only tobe revealed at registration.

The non-stop race challengeseach competitor physically andmentally, generally taking betweentwo to six hours to completedepending on your skill andspeed.

There are multiple legs of eachdiscipline, which when combinedmake the classic course over35km; and for beginners, or thoseteams just wanting a shorter race,a novice category has been addedwhich is half the distance of theclassic course.

The event starts at 8am fromthe base of Wild Horse Mountain.Teams will be competing for morethan $3500 in prizes.

Registrations are $115 perperson and close on Wednesday,March 16. To enter visit:www.paddypallinadventure.com.au.

THERE is a lot of information outthere as to the ‘best’ way to train, the ‘smart’ way to train, the ‘right’way to train – from free Ironmanprograms on the internet to payingupward of $800 a month for aprogram written by a high profileoverseas coach.

An athlete has endless choiceswhen it comes to deciding whatprogram they are going to use tohelp them to achieve their goals.

The art of prescribing a trainingprogram for an athlete is acomplex one, and is oftenundervalued. An athlete is willingto put a massive payment downfor a bike, but is hesitant to investtoo much money into a coach.

Whilst in our view this isnonsensical, it is however, understandable. The tangiblenature of a new rig is just that, tangible – you hand over cash fora sweet bike and then ride awaywith it. This is in direct comparisonto engaging a coach to write yourprogram. This process requires alot of trust and perceived valuefrom the athlete before theycommit to outlaying any moremoney on a training program.

Investing in a quality trainingprogram will result in thesignificant and long-term gains anathlete is desirous in achieving. Inshort, if you are on the righttraining program with the rightcoach, the gains you will see in

yourself and the attainment ofyour goals will soon be tangible.

The importance of a trulycustomised program issignificantly understated and isunfortunately rarely implementedby coaches.

Every athlete is different, andthis should reflect in your trainingprogram. If you are wanting toreach your potential whatever thatmay be, ensure that the programyour coach is setting you isentirely suited to you and puttingyour goals first. Especially seenwith internet programs, 12/16/20week programs are given outdepending on an athlete’s currentlevel of fitness and labelled as“custom”.

This quite frankly, is not doingyour goals any favours.

Take this example – twoathletes, who in the unlikely eventhave the same goal time for aparticular race and have a similarlevel of fitness, would presumablywould be on the same standardprogram. If, however, you take amore detailed looked at theathletes, you will see that they willundoubtedly have differentstrengths and weaknesses (withineach discipline), different trainingthresholds, different recovery ratesfor each discipline, different

training histories, mentally havedifferent breaking points andimportantly have differentwork/family commitments.

It then begs the question, how could it be possible thatthese two athletes be on thesame program? If they are, it isto their detriment.

Each athlete’s program isunique to that individual andcan simply not be replicatedfrom others.

The program needs to beever evolving as well. As youimprove in one area, theprogram needs to adaptquickly. If you are fatiguing in a

particular aspect of the training, the coach needs to be on top ofthat and amend the program (day, week and month) accordingly.

A truly individualised trainingprogram will take into account allof these factors and evolves toensure that the athlete has theabsolute best chance in reachingtheir potential.

So, next time you areconsidering jumping on a programor if you are already on one, makesure that program is putting youand your goals first.

Ensure everything in the presentis geared to reaching yourabsolute potential in the future.

Your program unlocking true potential?

SWIMMING, riding and running isthe perfect outlet for DetectiveSenior Constable Linda Florence.

The combination of stress andtraumatic situations is a dailyoccurrence, and triathlon offers alevelling environment for the49-year-old.

Tragically, Linda’s colleagueRussell Sheehan (pictured) tookhis own life justbefore Christmas.

As a tribute toher colleague andto raise awarenessabout Blue Hope –a support servicerun by police forpolice and theirfamilies – Linda and nine otherriders are cycling 300km in oneday.

They will journey fromWoodgate to Maroochydore onMay 21, while on the same day asupporters group will pedal fromNoosa Police Station to the samefinish area.

“Woodgate is a very personalplace for Russell. He left the jobfor a short period of time and ranthe general store there,” Lindasaid.

“That’s why I chose Woodgate. It’s a challenge for me butachievable and I thought that itwas a great way to raise moneyfor Blue Hope.

“The significance of policesuicide is getting greater.

“Blue Hope is about having asupport service that (officers) canrelate to…that’s such an importantthing. This is a support servicethat is police-specific. Theyunderstand the challenges weface and can provide that

assistance.”Linda has enlisted the help of

fellow Atlas Multisports clubmembers Brenda Bimrose, BenJohnston, Belinda Grobler,Natasha Crawford and GregMcDermott, along with four policecolleagues.

It will be the first time she hasundertaken 300km in one day,and has only ever clocked upabout 200km in one outing as partof Ironman training.

Having completed threeIronmans, Cairns twice and theother at Melbourne, this latestchallenge will test her and theteam.

“I love triathlon. Training as agroup you come across so manypeople you would never normallymeet,” she said.

“It’s a great way to get to knowpeople and meet people outsideof the police force.”

SO YOU are in the market for aSUV because you needspace...really?

The humble station wagon hasfallen out of favour, but are oftenwrongly overlooked – especiallyfor those who need to cart bikes, kayaks and other sportingequipment.

For those who don’t need totackle terrain too challenging, theVolkswagen Passat Alltrack lovesthings rough-and-ready.

The new wagon has beenreleased last week in a breath offresh air for the company, off theback of what can be bestdescribed as a challenging 2015.

Starting from just below$50,000, the Passat Alltrackforms an important weapon inVW’s sports utility vehicle attack. It’s an armoury which is somewhatundersized in a market where carmanufacturers are waging warwith a flurry of SUVs in all sizes.

With just the compact Tiguanand large Touareg in its fleet, VWis asking a burning question to anation besotted with the fauxoff-roaders: Do you really need aSUV?

ComfortGlossy finishes, elongated airvents, stainless steel-look pedalsand sill plates along with ananalogue clock capture the eye ona dash which is clinical yet easy tonavigate.

Wonderfully comfortableleather-trimmed front sports seatscreate the ambience of anup-spec offering.

Adult accommodation iswelcoming for five with generoushead and leg room, although twoon the rear bench seat is a morecomfortable fit.

The driver has a typical VWinstrument setup, with a conciseanalogue tachometer and speedoflanking a digital display which youcan toggle through to get varioustrip information.

Sitting central is the colourtouch-screen which isstraightforward in operation.Featuring modern appexpectations for Apple andAndroid phones, finding your waythrough sat nav, radio and stereofunctions takes little analysis afterfirst introductions.

On and off the roadWith 174mm of ground clearance,27.5mm over the standardPassat, the Alltrack makes easy

going of gravel roads and somesemi-challenging tracks.

While steel underbodyprotection has been abandoned infavour of “extremely tough plastic”for a 16kg weight saving over theoutgoing model, it has the abilityto easily negotiate conditions likelyto be ever faced by most SUVbuyers.

Running primarily in two-wheeldrive while on the bitumen, whenslippery conditions are detected(or challenging cornering)all-wheel drive is enacted viaelectronic differential locks oneach axle. On some testing dirtroads through the BlueMountains, the Alltrack negotiatedthe conditions with ease albeitwith a sense of floatiness ifattacking slippery sections withtoo much enthusiasm while someoff-camber sections also feltsketchy on occasions. We’llreserve final judgment until fullyladen with the family.

Highway travel proved a joy, with the Alltrack extremely quietand well mannered, whilecornering was better thananything that can be achieved byan SUV due to its lower rideheight.

What do you get?Equipment is generous with nineairbags, leather seat trim,three-zone climate controlledair-con, radar cruise control, CDstereo with 10 gigabyte hard drivefor compatible music files alongwith Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink andAndroid Auto apps, as well as satnav, sports front seats with lumbarsupport and 18-inch alloys.

Safety is excellent via theexpected suite of gizmos such asstability control and anti-lockbrakes, but you also get a fatiguedetection system which analysesyour driving and advises when totake a break, rear view cameraand a traffic alert to help advise ofany obstacles or traffic whenreversing, blind spot warning, emergency braking which stopsthe car after an accident to avoidfurther collisions and forwardcollision warning that canautomatically apply the brakes toavoid or lessen an impact.

A Comfort Package is availablefor $3500, which includes apanoramic sunroof, some externaland internal decorative extras, turning LED headlights and anautomatic parking function.

PracticalityThere are dual cup holders in thefront, along with bottle holders inthe doors, while there are a furtherthree cup holders in the fold downarm rest in the back. Rear seat

backs fold in a 40-20-40configuration with a lever in theboot to drop them flat, or aseat-top button. A hefty 639 litresof space is available in the boot, which can expand to more than1700 litres with the seats folded.

You also get a full-size spare, while Continental rubber comeswith “ContiSeal” which canself-repair punctures of up to5mm.

The lowdownWhat’s Volkswagen’s biggestselling car globally? The Golf? No,it’s the Passat. Apparently theworldwide numbers show one issold every 28 seconds. But theelephant in the room remains thewagon versus SUV debate.Volkswagen has equipped theAlltrack well and it is an impressiveall-round performer. With a slightlyjacked-up ride height it offers thedriving position muchsought-after, along with morespace than afforded by manySUVs.

KAREENA Lee's gruellingschedule had no impact on herclaiming the Mooloolaba Mile onSunday as she continues herOlympic quest.

The Sunshine Coast swimmerwas the first competitor across theline in the 1.6km event with a timeof 17min45sec, beating men'sdivision winner Mitchell Tinsley bytwo seconds.

It was the second time she haswon the event and follows apacked schedule that includesswim meets in Abu Dhabi andSydney just last week.

She flew back to the CoastSaturday night.

“I like to keep busy by going inas many events as possible,” Leesaid.

“It is a big schedule but I havegot to be used to doing so muchas a 10km swimmer so it is justmore practice.”

Kareena’s next hit out will be atthe Australian titles in April.

She will then start a hugetraining block in the lead up to theOlympic open water qualifier inJune at Portugal.

“I will be doing a lot of trainingahead of Portugal so it is good tobe competing in everything I cannow,” Kareena said.

Fellow local swimmer ChloeGubecka finished second placeahead of Alanna Bowles in third.

Chloe's older sister Chelseafinished fourth.

Chelsea took out the Australianopen water swimming title (10km)and (5km) last month, beating Leein both races.

Kareena said the pair wereextremely close, but that theirfriendship goes out the door whenthey hit the water.

“It is a little bit hard to come toterms with but that's how it is,”

Kareena said. And with just one Australian

Olympic open water spot availablefor Rio, their friendship is set to be

tested even further. “Either way,no matter who gets it, we will bothbe happy,” Kareena said.

The best-placed Oceania

swimmer at Portugal will gainOlympic selection.

Michael Sheil was second in themen's mile race.
