A recent report from mortgage lender Kent Reliance, based

on data from the Office of National Statistics and the Land

Registry, predicts that by Spring of next year, private

landlords in the UK will own property worth £1trillion.

That’s an extraordinary figure, even taking into account the sheer

number of people who can count themselves as a landlord. In 2001, the

number of buy-to-let property owners stood at two million and Kent

Reliance estimates that could have grown to five million by 2016.

While London accounts for around 41% of the total, and the South

East a further 15%, buy-to-let can certainly be considered a national

phenomenon and one that more and more people have turned to in

the face of low interest rates on their savings and poorly performing

pensions.

Investing in property is certainly not a guarantee of a financially

secure, future but real estate generally has proven to be a safe bet as a

long-term investment, outperforming banks and the stock market.

Now could be a good time for you to seriously consider starting a

property portfolio.

person who prepares scale drawings of your

new property or throws things in the nearest

box and hopes for the best, moving can be a

stressful experience.

With a recent study suggesting that moving

home is more traumatic than divorce or

bankruptcy, you might be surprised to hear that

little easier, we’ve prepared our top six tips to

help you on your way.

PLAN iN AdVANCE

Ensure that your possessions are boxed up and

clearly labelled well in advance. Above all, make

sure all boxes are secure – you don’t want that

antique crockery set ending up on the floor! If

you have friends and family helping out, keep

track of what time they are arriving and the

tasks that might suit them. Most importantly,

try not to tire yourself out too early on - a good

night’s sleep will do you a world of good ahead

of a busy day.

GEt thE KEyS

If you are picking up the keys on moving day,

arrange your plans around the time you will

be collecting them. You can load up the van in

advance, but avoid leaving your friends sitting

outside your new home while you are waiting to

sign the contracts and pick up the keys.

drESS dOWN

Your new home won’t mind if you don’t dress

up for it. You will be on your feet for much of

the day and will get

sweaty and dusty,

so wear loose and

comfortable clothing

that will be able

to withstand the

pressure and any

unexpected changes

in the weather.

You may be busy

but you shouldn’t go

hungry. In all of the

madness, you might

not get a chance to

head to the shops, so

prepare sandwiches

and snacks the

evening before. This

will allow everyone

to grab a convenient

bite to eat whenever suits them. Taking a bottle

of milk and some teabags around to your new

home is also highly advised!

The last thing you will need is your phone to

die on you, so ensure you leave it on charge

overnight.
