Award for Outstanding Teaching for Employability:With MMU’s vision and commitment to becoming the university for world-class professionals, this awardrecognises teaching that delivers work-ready graduates.

Shortlisted Nominees:

Dr Christopher Bull - Christopher has been described by students as the most organised, encouraging teacher atMMU. He is always encouraging students to think beyond their academic career. Feedback from our studentsindicated that Christopher is very dedicated to personal development, not only by helping students develop newskills but helping them to build on their existing skills, in order to prepare them for future employment.

Dr Mick Hillman - Mick makes employability achievable for all students. He puts so much effort into helping,advising, organising and agreeing placements. He goes beyond the call of duty to help all of his students andgenuinely wants the best for them, directing them and guiding them in the right direction towards employment.

David Leathlean - David is a teacher that is bursting with excitement about his subject. David’s enthusiasm iscentral to the quality of the learning experience, and he also goes that extra mile for his students ensuring they getall they can out of their course by focusing students’ minds on their future. He organises networking opportunitiesand outside events with industry professionals, putting his students in the best possible position to succeed aftergraduation.

Geoff Sheppard – Geoff is extremely helpful and supportive in developing students’ professional practice. Histeaching is engaging and relevant, bringing in aspects of his own experience to help inspire the individuals heteaches. One student stated ‘you’d be hard pushed to find a better lecturer.’ He is dedicated to the professionaldevelopment of his students.

WINNER (Dr Mick Hillman) This person has helped to inspire and motivate students to think about theircareers and goes out of their way to ensure students are doing all they can in order to help further their careerprospects. This person’s dedication to their students means they are constantly on hand to help, no matter whatthe issue and has even been described as ‘a true undiscovered gem at MMU’.

Award for Outstanding Feedback:This award acknowledges practices which strive to ensure that feedback remains central to the learning process.

Shortlisted nominees:

Dr. Jess Edwards - Jess provides only the highest quality feedback to his students which is always clear andconcise. Jess always goes out of his way to help his students with their work, regularly providing useful websitelinks onto webCT in order to ensure the students have as much information as possible. The feedback received bystudents has been well organised, relevant and quick to support the students on their next assessments.

Dr. Anneke Meyer - Anneke not only gives thoroughly detailed feedback, but she always makes the process offeedback as effective as possible and will go out of her way to discuss any areas of feedback with her students.Students have described her helpful nature as ‘extremely effective and inspirational’.

Elaine Reeves - Elaine is extremely helpful when it comes to providing feedback. She goes out of her way toexplain why she has given this feedback and provides a clear indication on what needs to be improved. Elaine’sfeedback is continuous and not just as a response to a submitted piece of work.

Dr. Aidan Arrowsmith - Aiden offers his students immediate feedback, whether it is on a piece of assessed workor responding to student’s questions or thoughts in class. The feedback that he provides is helpful and gives clearadvice on how your work can be improved. It is not just critical but informative too and he gives in depth advicewhich a number of first year students have found exceptionally helpful.

Tony Mulligan - Tony provides continuous feedback to all of his students; his feedback is in-depth, constructive,useful and simultaneously provides information and support. His consistent feedback is apparent through all venues,in-lessons, after lessons, over lunch breaks, via e-mail and even in his spare time.

WINNER (Tony Mulligan) This winner shows dedication to improving student’s grades, job prospects andexperience through communication with them. The level of feedback provided by this person is always of thehighest quality and inspires students to reflect on their work. This individual understands that specific personalfeedback is what makes students successful and the feedback this teacher provides is above and beyond what isnecessary.

Award for Best Personal Tutor:Personal Tutors are one of the most valued assets in the student support provided by MMU and this awardrecognises the hard work and commitment of those individuals that make the scheme a success.

Shortlisted nominees:

Rachel O’Sullivan - Rachel is an inspiration and has been a constant support for her tutor group. Her adoption ofdifferent teaching styles and engaging learning tasks pull the whole group together as one. One student stated that‘I am now a stronger, more informed, and better developed person through Rachel’s impact on my life! She hasbeen invaluable to me and many others.’

Janet Rooney - Janet is always willing to take time out of her day to dedicate time to listen to you alwaysresponding to any request promptly and helpfully.Her sense of humour is in tune with her students and it is obvious that she really does care about the students onthe course. One student described Janet as ‘the most caring person they have ever met’.

Prof. Joanna Verran - Joanna is a brilliant listener and provides her students with all the help they need. Shealways makes her pupils aware of any events or activities that may benefit their future careers. Here positive andapproachable attitude helps students feel comfortable and at ease in their studies. Joanna treats each pupil asindividuals, making them feel valued and appreciated at MMU.

Dr. Michael Hayes - Michael provides invaluable support and advice to all of his students. He has a very patientnature and is on hand to help students whenever they need it, always finding time for his students. Mike alwaysgoes that extra mile for students and is loved across the biology degree by all students. One student stated ‘Mike isan inspiration to many and I only wish to be as successful as he is with my own career’.

Louise Quinn - Louise is an amazing tutor, having taken on a large tutor group all on here own, she has alwaysmade students feel valued and treats them all as individuals, going out of her way to help each and every one. Shegenuinely believes in all of her students, providing them with helpful feedback and reassuring them when they arehaving a bad day.

WINNER (Louise Quinn) This teacher has been described as ‘truly and inspiration to all of us’. This personpractises only the highest degree of professionalism. Support from this tutor comes in every shape and form. Froma quick email to see how things are going to an in depth one to one chat or a whole group discussion, nothing everseems too much of a problem. This teacher has been described by students as ‘approachable, enthusiastic,encouraging and professional’. The door to this tutors office is always open for times went students want to discussconfidential matters and students are always welcomed with open arms rather than being left with the impressionthat their tutor has other things to deal with.

Award for Best Supervisor:This award recognises an individual who has not only been supportive and well organised; but also someone whohas listened and intervened when necessary.

Shortlisted nominations:

Shaun Litler – Students expressed that Shaun is a credit to MMU, his teaching techniques and personality bring hislectures to life and his commitment to the success of his students is outstanding. He provides continuous feedbackwhich is both constructive and encouraging, helping students to expand their intellectual horizons and allowingthem to approach their research with innovation.

Dr Geoff Bunn – Geoff is an extremely helpful, encouraging supervisor. He is patient and caring but never putsconvenience before the intellectual progress of his students. His constructive feedback and words ofencouragement motivate students to continue with their work at times when it would be easier to give up. Onestudent stated ‘it has been a pleasure working with someone of his genius.’

Janet Marsden - Janet has provided continuous support to students and is dedicated and encouraging towards herpupils. She offers empathy and compassion to all of her students and does not give up on them. Students explainedthat with Janet, they never felt they were a burden to her. Her feedback is always constructive and timely and shewill always make time for students, no matter how busy her schedule.

Haleh Moravej - Students have expressed that they feel motivated and inspired by Haleh. She puts a lot of timeand effort into her classes and goes beyond what most staff do. One student stated that they feel truly honoured tohave Haleh as their supervisor.

Dr Kate McGowan – Students have expressed that Kate is an outstanding teacher and is highly admired by herstudents. She is highly sought after as a supervisor by students both within her department and across the widerfaculty. She gives consistent and reliable feedback that is always thought provoking and helpful.

WINNER (Haleh Moravej) This supervisor puts a lot of time and effort into their students, at times going beyondtheir call of duty in supporting and guiding their pupils. This individual is known for introducing a new dimension totheir teaching and the passion they put into their work is second to none. This individual’s caring nature shows thatthey do not want anything in return but simply want the chance to affect young people’s lives in a positive way.

Award for Best Course Representative:This award recognises an individual who has volunteered their time to improve their fellow students experience atMMU.

Shortlisted nominees:

Daisy Rowan – Daisy maintains a great relationship with all tutors and lecturers in order to make sure herstudents get the best experience out of their time at MMU. She is a very personable yet professional individual andhas her peer’s best interests at heart.

Chris Green – Chris is a very proactive course rep who is constantly communicating all of the latest news to hisfellow peers and although he is responsible for a large number of students, he always makes time for them,welcoming any queries or suggestions. He is a very reliable course rep and never lets anyone down, always tryinghis best to solve any problems that students may encounter.

Ava Brockbank – Ava really cares about the quality of her fellow student experience and values their views andopinions. She takes her position as student rep very seriously and is committed to making a difference. Her friendlynature and dedication make students feel that they have someone backing their corner.

Mairead Downey – Mairead’s peers have described her as a friendly, genuine person who cares deeply about theneeds of about her fellow students. She always communicates back to her peers on any developments and isalway6s open to ideas when it comes to organising student events.

Andrew Ryder – Andrew is a very approachable individual and welcomes any comments, questions or suggestionsfor improvement from his peers. Andrew is a motivated, positive and very enthusiastic course rep and his presencereally does make a difference to the student experience.

WINNER (Chris Green) This individual has maintained an exceptional relationship with their peers, constantlycommunicating any updates or developments taking place. This individual is always on the ball and takes great carein listening to their peers and respects their individual views and opinions. They manage to prioritise their workloadappropriately whilst still ensuring that they are representing their fellow students, campaigning for the best studentexperience possible. This rep makes their students feel valued and important, making the time to try and solve anyproblem they are approached with.

Award for Best Overall Department:This award recognises the department that has gone above and beyond the basic organisation and management ofprogrammes and teaching to demonstrate genuine passion for the student experience.

Shortlisted nominees:

Information and Communications – This is a small but perfectly formed department. Lecturers areapproachable and friendly and do their utmost to help students achieve the highest standard possible. The staffcommunicates well with all students keeping them updated on any class changes. The curriculum is so varied youdon't get stuck in the same type of class all day.

Business Management (Crewe) - The level of support academically has been outstanding. The range of units,the delivery of the modules and the innovative personalisation allows student to develop personally andprofessionally. The whole team is committed to providing the best experience for students and go out of their wayto provide relevant support.

Exercise and Sports Science - The entire teaching and technical team on this course have made it their point ofconcern that no student is left behind. They go out of their way to ensure that students learning experience isexciting and memorable. Their dedication to the progress and well-being of students is outstandingly amazing anddeserves to be rewarded. The lecturers are very organised and well trained in their area of expertise; they are veryconsiderate and listen to the students.

Department of Physiotherapy – As a department they constantly strive to provide the best possible studentexperience. It is a very close knit department, no matter which tutor you speak to, they all know your name, nomatter how busy they are, their doors are always open, and, it is genuine. The staff in the physiotherapydepartment see the students as family, as friends, as part of their community, not indispensable students.

School of Law – The facilities and staff within this department are both exceptional. Everyone helps and supportseach other and teachers will always make time for their students. With this team or professional, flexible andsupportive lecturers the organisation of this department is always on top form. One student stated: ‘I am proud tobe part of this department and I can only hope the department gets recognised for its achievements!’

WINNER (School of Law) The staff within this department are clinical specialists in their area, offering bright,new ways of delivering education that is engaging and exciting. The teaching within this department is that of trueworld class professionals. Everyone in this department knows everyone else, making it a friendly place to be. If youhave a problem, whether course-based or not, you can always find someone to help, and the lecturers go out oftheir way to ensure students experience at MMU is the best it can be. This department not only concentrates onthe students academic progression but their professional progression, providing information on networkingopportunities for their students and network meetings integrating the students into the profession. They expectstudents to perform at their best and take steps to making this possible.

Award for Best Overall Course:This award recognises the effort of great team work to create a rounded overall experience, which results in afeeling of high satisfaction amongst the students who study on the course.

Shortlisted nominees:

Maths – Students have said that this course is extremely well organised, well structured, well taught and updatedregularly. The lecturers clearly enjoy teaching their subjects and make the effort to engage with students in and outof the classroom. The course leaders ensure that students' views are heard and any issues are taken seriously anddealt with appropriately.

Outdoor Studies - Students have said that this is an extremely enjoyable course, creating many job prospectsafter completion and has a great team of lecturers. It prepares you for a successful career and is a very tight-knitcommunity, with excellent facilities and resources.

Accounting and Finance – Students feel this is a well organised and structured course, they are always clear ondeadlines and the diversity of the course keeps it interesting and exciting. The passion and enthusiasm the courseslecturers have is inspiring and their knowledge of the subject area as a whole really helps students to understand.Students have described the teachers on this course as ‘world class.’

Primary Education - This is a course that always runs smoothly and communication between teachers andstudents alike is impeccable. Teachers have their student’s best interests at heart, striving to help find workplacements and developing their overall professional skills.

WINNER (Outdoor Studies) This course provides excellent resources and equipment for its students in orderto aid them with their studies. Its innovation, support and guidance are consistently of a top flight level. Studentshave described this course as exciting, interactive and engaging and the support from tutors is exceptional. Onestudent commented ‘I always look forward to getting up for lectures and seminars because I know it'll be aboutsomething fun and presented in a straight forward way that's easy to relate to and comprehend.’

Award for Best Overall Teacher:The best teacher award acknowledges someone who continually demonstrates enthusiasm for the subject,delivering teaching in an engaging and exciting manner.

Shortlisted nominees:

Dr. Rachel Delbridge - Rachel is thorough and exceptionally well organised, she also ensures that she spendssome of the class time to work with individuals one-on-one. Rachel makes each student feel like individual learnersrather than just talking to an audience. She can tailor lessons so that everyone can learn at a rate and level they arecomfortable with, whilst giving everyone the opportunity to learn more. She is approachable and friendly and canhave fun with the class while being able to deliver the subject in an engaging way.

Ruth Sharpe – Ruth is truly an inspiration to her students, nothing is too much hassle for her. She is understandingand her creative approach to teaching helps engage students with the subject. She is genuinely on the student’s sideand cares about not just the learning but the well being of every student in her class.Ruth’s lessons are always engaging and exciting and her feedback is always helpful and encouraging. She hasexceptional subject knowledge and is able to adapt it too meet everyone’s need.

Dyan Colclough - Dyan goes above and beyond in her role as tutor, not only making sure all students understandwhat is required but also what they can do to improve. She is always on hand to offer guidance and advice. Dyan isunderstanding, approachable and motivating. She puts her all into preparing and delivering her classes, inspiringstudents to do the same. She advises, nurtures and is very concerned with ensuring she is providing the rightlearning environment for all of her students. Overall she is a credit to her profession.

Mel Powell - Mel puts her life and soul into teaching her course. Mel is there as a listening ear when anyone has aneed, worry or query, she does her absolute best (almost always to successful results) to make any changes orimprovements to the way the course is run, inspiring the class with her advice, stories and knowledge of theindustry. Mel is not just there when students reach out for her, but she seeks them out to make sure that no one inthe group feels isolated, lost or confused with the course material.

Keri Nixon - Keri's unsurpassed knowledge, intelligence and experience in this realm is second to none. Herrelaxed and approachable attitude allowed students to discuss and debate in class allowing students to gain as muchinformation as possible. Keri, for a young lecturer is an absolute asset to the school of health, psychology andeducation; bringing in an active, interesting and modern approach to teaching for which her students believe shetruly deserves this award. One student described her as ‘the best tutor they ever had.’

Julie Ryan – Julie is supportive, innovative and caring. She is creative in her approach to teaching and makessessions meaningful and relevant to students learning needs. She is never too busy to talk to her pupils and makesthem feel valued. Julie has an amazing knowledge of her subject which she delivers at a level relevant to herstudents. She ensures that lessons are interesting and challenging at the same time. She is truly inspiring.

Dr. Lucy Burke – Lucy is an exceptional tutor, offering advice and guidance, excellent teaching and coursecontent. She makes every student she comes into contact with feel valued, and makes time for anyone who comesto see her with whatever problem they may have with their academic work. She provides all the relevant materialsneeded for learning. She is quick to reply to any queries and her door is always open. In her seminars everyone istreated as an individual and she listens and accepts everyone’s points of view.

Howard Hughes – Howard treats all pupils as individuals and appreciates that each person learns their own wayand in their own style. He takes on a very exciting, enthusiastic approach to his teaching and the atmosphere in hislectures is always relaxed, allowing students to get the most out of each lesson. His continuous feedback isconstructive and encouraging and his knowledge of the subject is extraordinary.

WINNER (Mel Powell) A teacher is more than someone that stands at the front of a room and reads off ofPowerpoint slides. To truly teach is to inspire, innovate and affect your pupil, which cannot be done in a classroomalone and that is why this individual has won the award. This tutor makes a positive impact on their pupil’sacademic experience by constantly encouraging students to strive for the best. This teacher is always positive

towards their pupils making students feel as though there is no goal they can’t reach. This teacher has co-ordinatedtheir course to prepare pupils for the real-world and adapts lessons in order to make them more relevant tostudents learning experience. This teacher is always going out of their way to provide guidance and information.

The ‘President’s choice’ awardWINNER (Joss West-Burnham)This award recognises the overall achievement of an individual, course or department that has shone throughoutthe nomination process. Who we believe is making a difference to student’s education through every means,lecturing, feedback, supervising and overall support.
