The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour 2018Hans Holbein the Younger A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling (Anne Lovell?)13 October 2018 to 6 January 2019Free with Brighton Museum admission, residents & members

A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling is one of Hans Holbein the Younger’s earliest English portraits and it is one of his most engaging and beautiful works. This touching portrait holds many secrets to decode. Alongside this 16th Century Masterpiece, the functions and meanings of portraiture from the period will be explored through a selection of works from our own collection.

The Masterpiece Tour reflects the National Gallery’s commitment to promoting the understanding, study and appreciation of its collection to as wide an audience as possible. A major Gallery painting is touring the UK each year between 2018 and 2020. This year, Holbein’s A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling (Anne Lovell?)

has travelled the length and breadth of the country and will be on its final stop before returning home, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to see it here in Brighton.

The Snowman™20 October 2018 to 6 January 2019Free with Brighton Museum admission, residents & members

One winter’s night, a snowman comes to life and an unforgettable adventure begins. Discover the magic in this exhibition of the original illustrations for Raymond Briggs’ much loved classic picture book.

Glyn PhilpotContinues to 23 September 2018FINE ART GALLERYRoyal Pavilion & Museums’ diverse collections include an exceptionally strong group of paintings and sculpture by English artist Glyn Philpot (1884-1937). This display explores the artist’s life, including his relationships with Henry Thomas and his patrons, his hope to reconcile the religious image with the contemporary and the modernising impact he had on portraiture. Don’t miss the last few weeks of this small survey of Philpot’s work.
