welcomeWelcome to The Hive’s third What’s On guide. We hope you are now familiar with the format and continue to let us have your ideas and suggestions.

Spring is here and with warmer weather and lighter evenings approaching we hope you will venture down to The Hive and take part in some of the many activities, courses and events we have on offer. Take the time to enjoy coffee and cake from the café and admire the landscaping or the view from Story Island.

This season offers more live performances and a summer of exciting and intriguing exhibitions, led by the talented illustration department in the University amongst others. We have a new film series and more lectures and talks for all tastes; there is always something new to discover and inspire.

The Hive continues to offer regular activities for families and children and this year’s Summer Reading Challenge has a Record-Breakers theme. We welcome your ideas for Hive records we can aspire to!

The Visual StatementSecond year illustration students from the University of Worcester present their intriguing, enchanting, enlightening (and occasionally downright frightening) work for your viewing delight! Work on show represents the variety of voices and topics students have selected in order to make a visual statement.

Genocide: Remembering Srebrenica University of Worcester event

20 years ago Srebrenica, a small Bosnian town, witnessed a genocide in which over 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed and over 20,000 women raped to ‘ethnically cleanse’ the area. This exhibition describes the events leading up to the genocide and also displays related paintings by the artist, Robert McNeil MBE.

Year 6 Art ProjectYear 6 children at Cherry Orchard Primary School in Worcester have created an exhibition to tell visitors all that Worcester has to offer. As part of their history work, they have researched the many fascinating people, buildings and events found in the city and translated them into individual art pieces.

Shakespeare’s Europe, Europe’s ShakespeareIllustration students in Sequential Illustration are responding to four Shakespeare texts: The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, A Comedy of Errors and Titus Andronicus. These illustrations will be exhibited to coincide with the international conference Shakespeare in Europe, to be held at the University of Worcester from 26 June.

24 June - 22 July

The Worcestershire Camera Club - 125 Years of PhotographyOne of the UK’s oldest and leading photographic societies, the Worcestershire Camera Club, celebrates 125 years of continuous involvement with photography.

An exciting exhibition featuring members’ work with two informal Saturday Photo-Clinics from 10.00am – 4.00pm on 8 and 29 August giving demonstrations, advice and guidance to anyone interested in photography.

There’s always something fun to do in the children’s library. Our regular activities, Bounce & Rhyme, Wacky Wednesdays, Chatterbooks and Rat-a-tat Tales all continue during the school holidays.

Because they are so popular we have added some more Rat-a-tat Tales sessions on Wednesdays at 11.00am and 2.45pm on 22 & 29 July, 5, 12, 19 & 25 August and 2 September.

We’ve also got stacks of activity going on for the Summer Reading Challenge from 4 July to 19 September.

Come and rediscover favourite authors, uncover new ones and follow exciting trails – you never know what you’ll find!

From 4 July – 19 September 4 – 11 year olds can take part in the Reading Agency Summer Reading Challenge.

This year’s theme is Record Breakers. Sign up to read your 6 books to earn your rewards and take part in some of our record breaking challenges that run all summer. Can you make it to 6 books quicker than last year? Will you take on our Record Breaking Challenges and make it into The Hive Book of Records? Or even the Guinness Book of World Records? How about trying to break the record for the most library visits or most books borrowed ever.

And don’t forget if you are part of the Children’s University www.childrensuniversity.co.uk you can get up to 10 credits for taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge at The Hive.

2 Counties Training (Level 1 vocational qualifications and traineeships) is provided by Worcestershire County Council. Come and speak to a training provider about the programmes available, and for support whilst on a course. No appointment needed.

Access InformationThe Hive is fully accessible to wheelchair users, mobility scooters and pushchairs and has ramp access to all areas on each floor. Lifts give access to all five public floors within the building.
