The Rat in the year of the TigerThe Metal Tiger is a volatile year for the Rat as he goes on a roller-coaster ride with the Tiger’s antics and does not really know when he is up or down. For certain, there will be no lack of excitement this year as the Rat tries his best to anticipate and guess what the Tiger year is up to. It is unsafe at any speed to ride the Tiger, as the biggest problem would be getting off the beast once you had hopped on for the ride. The Rat may be involved in mis-understandings that make him act against his better judgment or lose his temper. It would be better for him to seek counsel before making important decisions and get different points of view before jump-ing to conclusions. He must rely on his advisors, mentors and loved ones to calm him down and help him analyze difficult situations. Most of the Tiger’s steam will run out by summer and it will be smooth going if the Rat will just let the Tiger year play out its drama. No lasting harm can come if he does not take the Tiger’s roaring too seriously. Of course, the best thing is to keep his distance and not in-vite trouble by annoying those in power or tempting fate. This is not the time for the Rat year native to act alone or be too aggressive. He will not feel alone as his large circle of friends and family will keep him busy and entertained. He may have

to travel more and will take longer to get things done as the Tiger’s influence does tend to complicate simple issues and exaggerate them just to get atten-tion. The Tiger loves to prance on centre stage with all the limelight. so the Rat native should just take a back seat, relax and listen to the advice of his friends. The Ox in the year of the TigerThe Metal Tiger’s year will present many challenges to the strong and dependable Ox and no doubt he will rise to the oc-casions to prove himself. However, the Tiger is a paradox and very unpredictable to boot. This causes some consternation for the Ox who likes to run a tight ship and will not tolerate any disturbance to his schedule or changes to his plans. The Ox will not be too happy having to make adjustments and compromises to suit the mercurial Tiger influence. The one thing that the Ox must retain this year is his sense of humour and pa-tience. His perseverance will pay off if he does not let himself get too worked up over the Tiger’s dramatics and love of attention. Instead of losing his tem-per or arguing with people who come up with crazy or unachievable ideas, he should just continue to work in his reli-able fashion and stick to what is tried and proven in his book. At the end of

the day, his judgment and reasoning will be validated. The Ox must rely both on his physical and

mental strength to triumph this year. Those who are close to him

will have confidence in him but he must speak up when necessary in

order to defend himself. Tigers do not understand the strong, silent type and will tend to bully the Ox if he is not as-sertive of his own rights. If he is too quiet and unresponsive to others, he may be misunderstood as stubborn and uncaring. The one thing that the Tiger year is likely to endorse is communication. The Ox must learn how to use this to his advan-tage or get advisors, mentors and friends to do the talking for him. It is imperative for him not to lose too much ground to the Tiger year or he may not be able to recapture it later on. Of course, no one is better than the Ox when it comes to standing his ground, but during the year of the Tiger, the Ox may need mediators or go-betweens to smooth the way for him and work out deals that benefit him. The autumn brings much awaited rest and relaxation for the Ox and his family as the Tiger year wears itself out without doing much damage.

The BeachThe vendors and horse riding on the beach have no connection with the hotel.They are unhygienic, and you risk your health and safety by patronising them.Horse riding on the beach is of particular concern. We have had several guests hospitalised because of accidents whilst riding beach horses. The important point we wish to bring to your attention is that by patronising beach ven-dors you encourage them and increase their numbers.

Non ResidentsIn the interest of guest safety and privacy we do not allow unreg-istered guests to visit guest rooms or use our swimming pools. Tailors may leave goods for de-

Streetwise - Friend or Foe?Please be wary with people in town who claim they work for the ‘Tourist Bureau’ or some-thing similar, and ask for a few minutes of your time to com-plete a questionnaire. Strangers and racketeers are of-ten selling time-share units or something akin, and if they man-age to find out your name and where you are staying, persistent sales people will pester you for the rest of your stay.

Have a HeartWhen you enjoy a romantic dinner for 2 on the beach under the Hua Hin stars, you may like to reflect on the fact that although Thai people have embraced Valentine’s Day and adapted this celebration of a legendary Christian Saint, it is in fact more of an indication of Thai culture. This is in as much that Thais just love to have an ex-cuse to enjoy themselves and have a good time, rather than show their appreciation for European tradition. Most Thais will happily pay 300 baht for a rose to give to their loved one or someone they just like or respect, even though it would only have cost 10 baht at any other time. The somewhat hazy legend of a Roman priest who defied Emperor Claudius’s ban on marriage, and ultimately paid the penalty by being executed, would not play a rel-evant part for most Thais, who would see 14th February as a day to celebrate mat-ters of the heart, such as getting married. Also high on the list is shopping, giving or receiving gimmicky items and enjoy-ing a themed meal, or an opportunity to do business and capitalise on the occasion. But in the inimitable Thai way it is sure to be elaborate and include the charm and artistic interpretation that adds to the magic.


The Tiger in the year of the TigerA Tiger must curb his optimism and im-pulsiveness during his own year. This is because there will be so much excitement going on and such a lot on his plate this year that the Tiger may be overwhelmed by the choices he has to make. In general, the Tiger finds it hard to make decisions as he tends to procrastinate and second guess himself. He needs to team up with strong-minded individuals who can be objective and take emotions out of the deal. At heart, the Tiger cares deeply for others and does not want to be the “bad guy”, so even when he puts up a strong front he may just bend the rules a little to help others out. This is a year for him to make no such exceptions and stay his course. If he is not careful, his indiscretions and imprudent kindness may come back to haunt him. In his own year, the Tiger will be lucky in love but may also have to spend beyond his means (no doubt to im-press others). Romance and new friend-ships are on the horizon as he finds peo-ple who will share common interests and goals. But he must sober up, accept reality and not try to change people or things that he cannot change or are beyond his control anyway. It is a year for the Tiger to surround himself with staunch realists and insulate himself against speculation and daring schemes that could land him in a lot of trouble. Any turbulence will blow itself out if the Tiger steers clear of taking big risks or makes long-term com-mitments only with the proper advice from experts. It is a good time for the Tiger to be with his family and friends and benefit from their support and team spirit. This will prove to be a volatile and stressful year unless the Tiger is able to vent his energies through sports, exercise, hobbies, social clubs, charities and other interests outside from his job. The Rabbit in the year of the TigerThe year of the Tiger will prove unpre-dictable and unsettling for most people, but the Rabbit is adept enough to hop over hurdles and obstacles caused by the Tiger’s love for controversy. If he is careful to distance himself from conflicts and dis-putes, the Rabbit will have an enjoyable year. The main thing to keep in mind is that the Tiger just wants to know where the boundaries are and test them. After that, his curiosity is sated and he will not bother teasing anymore. The Rabbit is wise enough to keep away from trouble and danger and will always observe things from a distance and negotiate the best deal for himself in the end. However, this year there will be many demands made

on the Rabbit’s time and talents. He may unwisely agree to commitments that are difficult to fulfil and feel frustrated at people who are unreasonable or who take him for granted. But the year of the Ti-ger looks complicated only on the surface and as soon as the Rabbit figures it out, he will return to his usual cool self. With cooler weather, the storm clouds brought on by the Tiger will dissipate and the Rabbit must practice perseverance and tact. He must play a good game of poker and keep an inscrutable face to outwardly fool others into thinking that he has all the right cards. This is the best strategy for the intelligent Rabbit to beat the Tiger in its own year. The summer would be the best time for the Rabbit to plan a getaway with his families and closest allies. The Dragon in the year of the TigerThe Tiger year will bring bounty and controversy for the Dragon native. He will relish the electric atmosphere of the Tiger’s reign, yet find it hard to achieve consensus among his peers and superiors. The Tiger tends to be erratic and some-times petulant and the Dragon must learn how to work around all the petty egos that need to be appeased in order to get things done during this year. No doubt, the Dragon does have a lot of influence and he is not afraid to use it but this year he must be flexible and adaptable to the Tiger’s whims and fancies that could bring him a lot of stress. He likes to work in a direct and objective way and does not tol-erate much interference from others. The Dragon’s leadership is going to be tested by the Tiger’s influence this year and the Metal element here just means that things could be unyielding unless someone is able to bend. To find the success he de-sires, the Dragon must be the one to bend and bring everyone together in a spirit of cooperation. Failure to

see the big picture could prove disastrous for the Dragon’s plans. In his private life, the Dragon finds romance and is happy with the support of his loved ones. Late summer or early winter is the best time for him to relax and go off on a holiday. If he has done all that he could and knows that he has given his best, then he should let things ride and understand that they will come to the right conclusion with-out any more pushing on his part. Both the Tiger sign of this year and the Dragon personality are overachievers and will not rest until things are done their way. This is not a year for the Dragon to polarize camps of dissention but rather to bring everyone together with his strong sense of leadership and stewardship. He must work for the good of all in order to secure his own goals. The Snake in the year of the TigerThis year brings numerous small prob-lems and irritations which could try the Snake’s patience and make him wary of new friends and untried strategies. The Tiger’s year is often beset by uncertain-ties created by the indecisive Tiger and this will bring stress to the Snake who is always sure of what he wants, when he wants it, why he wants it and, most im-portantly, how he will go about getting it. The adventurous Tiger can be reckless and restless by nature and does not care for the Snake’s discipline and focus. The Snake may be easily drawn into disputes and conflicts not of his making and will find it hard to understand and please those

around him and at work. The snake is deeply suspicious of the Tiger’s motives as he has a right to be. But,

whatever he does, he must hang on to his sense of humour and not indulge in vindictive acts of revenge. Things could backfire when he spits his venom and he may lose the support of those he values most and they will also lose respect for him. Better for him to allow the Tigers fireworks to burn out and then take a sec-ond look to assess his situation. The year of the Tiger only looks complicated from the surface and after all the noise and fan-fare, the Snake is able to recoup his losses and regain his equilibrium. Hopefully the

Snake will know to bide his time and not challenge the combative and colourful Ti-ger. Romance, new friendships and new partnerships may start out bright this year, but because both the Snake and the Tiger have suspicious natures, they may turn out to be less promising than expected. It is a plus that the Snake is analytical by nature while the Tiger is emotional and impulsive. It is best that the Snake remains grounded in his astute powers of deduc-tion and discounts all the theatricals that the Tiger is so great at. This way he will only engage in battles he absolutely needs to fight and ignore all the rest as diver-sions.

The Horse in the year of the TigerTiger and Horse dance to the same rhythm and are both governed by noble intentions and the ability to understand and get along with people. This year, the Tiger is bound to be exciting and invigo-rating for the quick-witted Horse who relishes the many challenges that come his way. The Horse does not mind that the Tiger is unpredictable and full of surprises and the Tiger year rewards the Horse for his ability to adapt and react quickly. There will be a lot of entertain-ment and expenses for the popular Horse during the reign of the Tiger and he must make sure not to exhaust himself or spend beyond his means. Romance and family life is lively as he meets new and fascinat-ing people. Advancement in his career or studies will happen this year as he makes good progress in reaching the goals he sets for himself. During this time, he must make the most of what he is given with-out being too demanding or losing his temper when he is not able to get his way. The Horse could destroy whatever he achieves with one thoughtless move and

can be inconsiderate and too practical in taking care of his own interests. He must not be too quick to judge oth-ers but keep an open mind and ask

for the opinions of his family, friends and colleagues at work before making

important decisions or changes in his life. Having another view may prove useful and fruitful to his ventures, while going it alone could be dangerous and risky. The intelligent Horse needs to be constantly occupied and challenged. The Metal Ti-ger will certainly provide him with lots of fun and responsibilities to keep him on his feet. He will enjoy this year tremen-dously if he plays his cards right. The Sheep in the year of the TigerThis year brings mixed blessings for the Sheep native. He will be able to keep ahead of the game only by allying himself to the right people and finding mentors and protectors. The kindhearted and gra-cious Sheep is always able to find a way out of his trouble or a champion to take up his cause. The Tiger will bring some

luck to the Sheep native in the form of contacts who will carry responsibili-ties for him and give him the support he needs. The Sheep thrives on praise and depends on others to show him the way. In his own way, he will be able to fight the competition by quiet resistance while figuring out a novel way to solve his problems. The Tiger can be brash and unpredictable but the Sheep native is an incredible survivor when he wants to be. Furthermore, he knows who to join forc-es with and does not like to act alone. He may look defenceless but he does know how to protect himself and will guard his interests when forced to. During the reign of the Tiger. the Sheep native must take special care not to be gullible. Money comes in but goes out just as fast and the Sheep may be left holding the bag if he lends money or counts on certain funds being repaid promptly. The rewards the Tiger brings to the Sheep may be in other forms than money. He could gain recognition for his talents, find new and influential friends, find happiness with his loved ones and be invited to reunions and holidays with them. The Monkey in the year of the TigerThe Tiger year brings happiness and dis-sent in the same boat, and the Monkey has to deal with turbulence in his private life or in affairs of the heart. The Tiger is anything but predictable, so good news and bad news keep the Monkey busy and constantly on guard. The Monkey would be wise to observe things from a perch at a safe distance until he figures out how to deal with the passionate and egotistic Tiger influence. The Monkey must be conservative during the Tiger’s year and think twice before embarking on new ventures with new friends. He should dis-count the hype that the Tiger brings and look at things with his realistic eye. The Monkey could consolidate his resources and deal only with reliable, old contacts. In this controversial year, what seems to be bad news in the beginning may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Monkey-born and vice-versa. He cannot take anything for granted, but must in-vestigate all his options and scrutinize the opportunities that come his way during the reign of the Metal Tiger. While the clever Monkey is quick and ingenious, he must not tempt fate and engage in mind games with his competitors. If only to save him time and grief, there is also the

rare chance that he may get caught by his own trick. Caution, perseverance and secrecy may be the Monkey’s best friends this year as he manoeuvres through the maze that the Tiger year brings. Others may find the maze challenging and in-tricate, but the Monkey is equipped to figure it out and find his way around the obstacles. Overall, he must remain vigi-lant and dedicated to his goals and friends while still looking after number one. The Rooster in the year of the TigerThis Tiger year is an eventful and exciting year for the Rooster native. It brings luck, confusion and controversy all at the same time. The Rooster will have a difficult time sorting out all his options and just when he thinks he has everything sorted out, the Tiger will change the rules of the game. The undisciplined influence of the fiery Tiger will no doubt cause some

frustration for the controlling Rooster personality who likes to be in charge. However, the Rooster enjoys dealing with challenges and will not give up without a good fight. He can and will restore his life and schedule to some semblance of what he is used to and come out ahead in his finances. Friends and contacts bring him tips and good information and the efficient and analytical Rooster native will be able to formulate his investment strategies well. The Rooster can prosper against the many odds he faces this year if he curbs his tendency to micromanage and scrutinize everything and everyone. His intentions are always noble and hon-ourable, but sometimes his methods irri-tate the very people he is trying to help. The Dog in the year of the TigerThis could be a splendid year for the Dog native as the Tiger and Dog signs are both champions of justice and equality. The Dog is not intimidated by the Tiger’s roar and swagger as he knows it is all for show and deep in his heart, the Tiger year harbours no ill intent towards anyone. It is just that the captivating Tiger is brash and adventurous and cannot stop craving the limelight. The Dog is able to recog-nize this and will give the Tiger its due and work with him amicably. There is no break in communications, as the Dog is able to keep his focus on his objectives and keep an even pace in spite of all the excitement a Tiger year brings. There is happiness and good news for the Dog at home, school and at work, as the Dog is basically honest and noble in dealing with those around him and makes himself indispensable when it comes to lending someone an ear or a shoulder to cry on. However, the Dog must discount good news and overrated reports and not take too many risks. As the impul-sive and curious Tiger does not have good brakes, the Dog should be realistic enough to hold back un-til he investigates further. He will have to rely on his instincts and curb his investments or spend-ing just to be on the safe side. During the reign of the Tiger, friends and family will also impose on the Dog’s good heart and generosity and take ad-vantage of him. The Dog should not be so quick to say yes or agree to their de-mands. He must set rules and conditions for others to perform and goals for them to achieve before he agrees to go out on a

limb to help them. His no-nonsense and practical tough-love approach will earn him the respect and recognition he de-serves. The Boar in the year of the TigerThe arrival of the Tiger year will bring better fortunes for the Boar native. How-ever, the Boar should not go out and spend all his money or think that there is no downside to his good fortune. The Ti-ger is such a good salesman and publicity expert that he will raise the Boar’s expec-tations, but may not deliver as promised. Meanwhile, the Boar has made big plans and is getting ready to move right into the mansion. Disappointments come this year from the negligence of the Boar or his representatives to read the fine print and ask the relevant questions. They have to do this before signing a contract and not after. Boars tend to have good faith and goodwill but often that is not enough to keep people honest. Unexpected ex-penses, fines, legal fees and taxes may put the Boar’s finances in trouble. Before ac-cepting any gifts or invitations, the Boar would be wise to find out what is ex-pected in return and how much will it cost him later on (with the interest com-pounded!). The year of the Tiger is an ex-hilarating time for the Boar as he meets so many new and interesting people and has the opportunity to link up with im-portant sponsors who will be charmed by the Boar’s sparkling personality. Hatmosphere of CelebrationsA gala event to welcome 2010 with stage performances, live music and fireworksIt was “hats off” to Dusit Thani Hua Hin for their New Year’s bash, “Hatscot New Year Party 2009”.This was the very first time for the resort’s annual new year celebration to feature a participatory theme, and guests were more than happy to oblige, with most coming prepared, even those long-distance sun seekers from frozen Europe.By 7:30pm, the hotel lobby was abuzz with activity as guests in their finery enjoyed drinks, greeted by the genial host, Victor Sukseree, the hotel’s general manager.By 8:30pm, guests had slowly migrated to the main lawn where a huge stage had been set up, facing the sea. Endless lines of buffet tables lined the perifery of the dining venue, featuring goodies such as grilled lobster, barbecued lamb, pan-fried foie gras, roast beef, suckling pig, pad thai noodles and Italian pasta, to name but a few.Serenading the crowd was the Royal Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kittikhun Sodprasert.Taking the microphone in turn were singers Arthur Panyachote, Issariya Kuprasert, Duangdao Thaohiran, Denis Ng, Rungrat Kuisuwan, Sirinporn Vessarojkit, Viruj Sarobol and Sakol Suchatvudhi, highlighted by star “hattractions” - prize-winning singers Surun Kungbunpot and Purin Khum-orn.Then it was time for a stage break, as Mr Victor acknowledged the “returners” - guest regulars who have attended the New Year’s Eve gala since the hotel opened 19 years ago - and invited selected contestants up to the stage for the Hat Parade Contest, to be judged by a panel of eminent personalities, including former screen goddesses Tarika Tidathit and Chomchai Chatvilai, top model Ornapa Krissadee and set designer Ritirong Jiwakanon. The Resonance Chorus, with their lively a capella repertoire, included songs from the hit musical Mamma Mia!. This proved a big hit amongst guests, judging by the number of people who quickly hit the dance floor to boogie.Hatscot, a series of dances from the Dusit Resort Acting Group (Drag), ensued. They performed hat-related selections from popular films and musicals, including My Fair Lady, South Pacific and even a tribute to The Little Tramp with the bowler hat, Charlie Chaplin.The series ended with a contemporary Thai farmer’s dance complete with ngob or farmer’s hat, which doubled as a prop to create waves on the sea.The Lai Thai Jazz Band then dished up some popular dance music to get the crowd into the mood for the final countdown, which took place beside the lake. As staff performers stood on a submerged walkway holding candles, fireworks lit up the night sky, signalling the end of 2009, and the start of a new decade, 2010.

Doorstep Attraction

How rare it is in this day and age to be able to get something for next to nothing. However, that is just what you get if you venture to the small village of Waghor, also spelt Wa Kor amongst other variations, less than a dozen kilometres south of the provincial capital, Prachuap Khiri Khan, For here, bordered by green fields and a totally unspoilt coastline, stands the King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology, a fascinating study centre where admission is just 20 Baht for adults and 10 Baht for children.

Waghor found its fame as the site where, on 18th August, 1868, His Majesty King Mongkut, King Rama IV – the king in the epic film and show The King and I – observed the total solar eclipse that he himself had predicted two years earlier. The accuracy of His Majesty’s calculations amazed and impressed the assembly of invited overseas dignitaries, earning him lasting respect around the world. Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, His Majesty King Mongkut passed away, struck down by a bout of malaria he is believed to have contracted whilst based at Waghor to see his prophesy come true.

King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology

In 1989, the Royal Thai Governmentsaw fit to build a lasting memorial to honour the work of the king who has become widely regarded as the Father of Thai Science. In 1990, the reigning monarch, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX, conferred the name King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology on the park, located just a 75-minute drive from the hotel, and the park was officially opened on 16th June 1993. Here, amongst unspoilt nature, is a chance to pay homage to the massive statue of the revered King Mongkut, centrally located with the grounds of King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology. Besides this, the standout features are undoubtedly Waghor Aquarium and a Space and Astronomy Centre. The former, although not comparable, may well have

provided some inspiration for Siam Ocean World in Bangkok, for not only does it have its own big tank, but it also houses Thailand’s original underwater tunnel, giving a real taste of life from a fish’s perspective. Displays in the six zones of the aquarium present all kinds of marine and freshwater aquatic life, not only from Thailand, but around the world. There are also interesting exhibits detailing marine and freshwater ecology. Descriptive information is provided in both English and Thai.The Astronomy and Space Centre, housed in three connecting buildings, is located elsewhere in the park, just a short stroll from the aquarium. Displays alongside the spiraling staircase of one building showcase the evolution of the universe and space travel. Elsewhere, there are tributes to the studies, work and projects of The Father of Thai Science, King Mongkut, as well as to today’s ruling monarch,

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX, with working light-and-sound displays of his rain-making project. The development of communication through to the present day also figures prominently.Other areas of the park have been set aside to studies of wetlands, ecosystems, energy and even dinosaurs. What’s more, in a far corner of the park, there is also a butterfly garden full of colourful tropical species enjoying a safe life amongst lush greenery and away from predators.

A small, inexpensive Thai restaurant and a souvenir shop housed within Waghor Aquarium allow you to contribute in someway towards the upkeep of this gov-ernment-funded venture, whilst nearby, vendors are on site offering traditional tasty goodies from Prachuap Khiri Khan.All in all, making the effort to visit the King Mongkut Memorial Park of Sci-ence and Technology makes for an inter-esting and rewarding educational day out for people of all ages. Not the least of its attractions is that it’s well off the beaten tourist track, free from the scourge of westernisation... and don’t forget the best thing of all is surely that it’s free.
