Grandparent rateIn today’s day and age, with many families consisting of two working parents, it is commonplace for grandparents to assist in caring for grandchildren. The Bloomingdale Park District regularly receives requests from residents to register their grandchildren in programs at resident rates, despite the fact the grandchildren are not residents.

The Park District recognized this challenge and changed its residency policy to accommodate resident grandparents and their non-resident grandchildren. This Park Board of Commissioners officially approved this immediate policy change at the September 15, 2014 board meeting.

“As our community continues to age and grandparents regularly provide care for their grandchildren, the Board of Commissioners felt it appropriate and in the best interests of our customers to accommodate our adult population by extending the resident rate to their grandchildren,” said BPD Executive Director Carrie Fullerton, CPRE. “This allows grandparents to share the vast array of quality programs, events, facilities and services offered by the Bloomingdale Park District with some of the most special people in their lives.”

Resident benefits include first priority when registering for a program, and in most cases, a lower program/pass fee than those residing outside the established district boundaries.

To receive the resident rate, participants must come to the Johnston Recreation Center and show proof of residency. Items to prove residency include tax bill and/or utility bill and a picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID).

Mission StatementThe Mission of the Bloomingdale Park District is to efficiently and economically provide recreation programs, facilities and open spaces

designed to provide enjoyable leisure time experiences that benefit the community.

Once again, it is my pleasure to bring you up to date on the activities of your Park District. These past few months have been busy ones for the staff and the Board of Commissioners. We saw the long-awaited renewed tennis courts at Indian Lakes Park finally being used to their full potential. It took a little longer than expected because of some underlying foundation problems that were not anticipated.

Keeping with the tennis theme, the courts at Stratford Park will be replaced as soon as the weather permits. Thanks to the residents that responded to our survey; we know that tennis is still a popular sport amongst our community. Seasons Four Park in Roselle has a brand new playground that the neighboring residents welcomed with open arms. Although the ribbon cutting celebration was rained out, we were able to provide the community a great day of fun later in the summer.

Next up, Circle Park’s antiquated playground will be replaced with updated, safer equipment. A full renovation of the park is being delayed due to Springfield’s budget mess which has caused the grant awarded to the District to be withheld. If the funds are released, we will continue further improvements to that park.

The neighborhood park in the middle of the community, Tompkins Park, can expect a new playground itself come springtime. A farm-themed playground commemorating Bloomingdale’s agricultural heritage has been approved and contracts have been awarded for its construction. Not to be left out, The Oasis Water Park has a very exciting surprise in store for its users next summer. Be prepared to be taken to breathtaking heights on Opening Day!

As you can see, we did not allow any grass to grow under our feet, although the record rainfall this past summer surely stimulated it. Thanks to our overworked and dedicated parks maintenance staff led by Joe Potts, the parks and facilities were always kept in a ready, usable condition. Our administrative and programming staff kept the building humming as many programs were forced indoors by the steady rains that never seemed to stop. Without such dedicated professionals, there would have been many disappointed faces. Speaking for the Board of Commissioners, I am grateful for your non-stop dedication and creativity in tackling a myriad of problems that were encountered.

Speaking of administrative staff, I am extremely proud to announce that Executive Director Carrie Fullerton was inducted into the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration this past September. This is an elite group of 125 professionals and educators in the field from across the country. We congratulate her and are in awe of the dedication and energy she provides to her staff. Congratulations and thank you, Carrie.

Our Finance Director, June Fergus, has also been busy this past year. In these days of alleged shady political finances, it is my pleasure to report that the District auditors have completed their review of our financial practices without a single word of caution and/or recommendation. That’s quite an accomplishment on her and our parts. Transparency is not just a word here.

Finally, as the holidays approach, I urge you to visit Old Town Park and the incredible Festival of Lights. In addition to a sparkling display of holiday lights and sights, the Park District also conducts on-site programming and entertainment activities in the park and at the nearby Museum. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Sincerely yours,

Sebastian “Buzz” PuccioPresident Bloomingdale Park District Board of Commissioners

The Park Bench News continued

The Bloomingdale Park District’s mission statement centers around providing programs, facilities and open space for enjoyable leisure time experiences. Tantamount to any enjoyable experience is ensuring its relevancy, and the Park District continually strives to remain atop the latest trends in parks and recreation. To wit:

• The Park District always seeks out new, innovative programs and classes for its residents. Browse through this brochure and keep an eye out for the “NEW!” icon.

• Of particular note amongst the new offerings is the Bloomingdale Park District Community Giving Gardens. Check out page 53 for more information on this new and exciting offering.

• In September of 2014, the Park District instituted its Grandparent Rate. In today’s day and age, with many families consisting of two working parents, it’s commonplace for grandparents to assist in caring for grandchildren. The Park District regularly received requests from residents to register their grandchildren in programs at the resident rate, despite the fact the grandchildren were not residents. The Park District responded by changing its residency policy to accommodate resident grandparents and their non-resident grandchildren. The move has been very popular.

• Approximately one year ago the Park District unveiled its responsive web site to provide the optimal viewing experience - easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling - across a wide range of devices (from mobile phones to desktop monitors). Over half of all visitors to www.bloomingdaleparks.org do so via a mobile phone or tablet device.

• This past summer, the Park District increased its social media presence to include Instagram. Follow us at Bloomingdale_Park_District. Looking ahead, keep an eye out in the coming seasons for more video (check out our YouTube page), and if you haven’t already, share your recommendation and/or review of the Park District on Facebook, Yelp or another site of your choosing. We always appreciate the feedback.

• Finally, it’s important for the Park District to communicate effectively to all of its constituents. And as it currently stands, some of the most influential residents are Millennials, the demographic cohort following Generation X that was born between 1982 and 2000. They are more diverse than any previous generation, and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, they now outnumber baby boomers 83.1 million to 75.4 million. Research shows they are drawn to walkable environments with cultural amenities. As a Park District, we have to think about how we can best serve their interests, so keep an eye out for improvements in all areas.

For more information on the Park District’s fun, affordability, convenience, trendiness and/or safety, visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org/About-BPD/Facts.htm.

Corporate Partners/Sponsors

Bloomingdale Bank & Trust, the Park District’s longest-tenured corporate partner, was awarded Best Friend of Illinois Parks – Small Business by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) at its Best of the Best Awards Gala October 2 at Wheeling Park District’s Chevy Chase Country Club.

The relationship began in 2007 with the bank sponsoring some of the District’s largest events. It has since grown into a partnership mutually beneficial to each party, and ultimately, the community.

Bloomingdale Bank & Trust’s sponsored events and contributions include:

• Sponsorship of Coin Dive, where children ages 4-12 dive for coins in the pool. It’s an annual family favorite at The Oasis Water Park.

• Sponsorship and host of Family Outdoor Movie. The location is ideal as there is easy access to electricity and indoor restrooms, plenty of parking and visibility, and all bank staff are on hand to assist with games, trivia and other fun activities.

• Sponsorship of Bunny Bash, where bank staff set up what resembles an inflatable ATM in which patrons try to catch fake money. If participants so choose, the bank honors the money collected if a new account is opened.

• Sponsorship of Festival of Lights, where bank staff provides hot chocolate and cookies to participants waiting in line outside for the popular carriage rides around Old Town Park.

• Sponsorship of Statewide Kite Fly, where bank staff helps assemble kites while also lending its mascot to participate in contests and games.

• Sponsorship of Fall Fest, where bank staff oversees the candy apple table, refilling supplies and helping kids create their own special treats.

“The community-focused vision of the bank and the Park District are keenly aligned,” said Bloomingdale Park District Executive Director Carrie Fullerton. “Their goal is to be ‘the community’s bank’ and our goal is to be ‘the main source of recreation/parks and open space’ for our community.

“This mutually-appreciated vision allows us to continue to partner in new, exciting ways each year. We are fortunate to have a partner in Bloomingdale Bank and Trust that genuinely cares as much about our community as we do.”

“Our partnership with the Bloomingdale Park District has been, and continues to be, the ideal complement to our efforts in this community,” said Bloomingdale Bank Manager Sue Sargent. “It has had an incredible impact on our bank’s success and given us a tremendous amount of exposure. The Park and the Bank work so well together because we have the same philosophy; to be top of mind, whether it be for financial or recreational needs. Together through our partnership, we’ve assisted each other in deepening our roots in this community and look forward to our continued success.”
