TODAY’S PROGRAM…
George Gilligan Introduced Jan Dowling, Coach, UM Women's Golf Team. Jan is start-ing her seventh UM coaching season. She grew up near Toronto, Canada, played golf for
Penn State, and toured as a golf professional for three years. She turned to coaching 14 years ago. This year's UM Women's' golf team will number nine players. The top five players will travel with the team. Practice starts this week. There are regular sea-son tournaments (in warmer climes) followed by the Big 10 and NCAA playoffs in April-May 2020. Jan showed us some of the out-standing training tools and facilities we have in Ann Arbor. The golf training building near the 12th hole of the UM Golf Course has indoor (warmed) driving tees, an inside chipping and putting area, and sim-ulator rooms for different golf courses. The college sport is high tech. They have detailed fairway maps, putting green maps with
slope data and varied updated pin placements during a match. Player performance statistics measure multiple performance criteria. Jan noted that the bottom line is player performance in match conditions. Asked if southern and southwest colleges have an advantage, Jan answered that the weather is better and the players like that but "northern" schools have performed very well on the links. UM travel players miss two class days for each golf match so they have to work harder to keep up their academics. Thank you, Jan, for taking the time to be with us today. President William started the meeting by thanking Larry French and Kathie Wilder for their leadership of the 8/22 - 8/25/2019 Michigan District Convention. Michigan District Gov-
ernor Larry Memmer pre-sented Distinguished Ser-vice Awards to Kathie Wil-der, Mary Schwartz and Larry French for their work on the Convention. Editor's note: Mary Stew-art, Jim and Ann Mattson and Chris Winkler were also named but I was not able to record the many other club members who worked hard making the convention a success. THANK YOU TO EVERY-ONE WHO PITCHED IN!
