The lengths we go to keep you, your family and our employees safe are a point of pride for us and are never taken lightly. Our employees participate in monthly safety training sessions provided by safety experts from the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC). These courses cover a wide variety of safety topics, including defensive driving, CPR, first aid and pole- top rescue. These trainings ensure that our employees are constantly reminded of the safety aspect of the job and the importance of using equipment in the safest manner possible. In addition to safety training for employees, we continuously raise awareness of electrical safety to our members and communities by providing safety articles in the North Dakota Living magazine, on our website and social media channels and by performing electrical safety demonstrations at local schools and community events. There, we show members just how easy it is for an accident to occur when working with electricity and how to prevent these dangerous, and sometimes deadly, mishaps. We also increase awareness of electrical safety by engaging with local fire and emergency services departments, offering electrical safety information pertaining specifically to Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative services. Periodically, personnel from NDAREC and the cooperative’s insurance company, Federated Insurance, conduct onsite inspections of cooperative facilities and employee work practices concerning safety. At Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative, we know that the more safety training we provide to our employees and share in our communities, the safer we all will be. Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative has always been dedicated to providing safe, reliable and affordable electric service to you, our member-owners. The lengths we go to keep you, your family and our employees safe are a point of pride for us and are never taken lightly.

Our employees participate in monthly safety training sessions provided by safety experts from the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC). These courses cover a wide variety of safety topics, including defensive driving, CPR, first aid and pole-top rescue.

There, we show members just how easy it is for an accident

to occur when working with electricity and how to prevent these dangerous, and sometimes deadly, mishaps.

That’s why we strive, every day, to raise awareness of, and encourage development in, electrical safety.

Power down your energy billYou may have fi nished working, but your laptops and PCs in the home offi ce are contributing to your electric bill.

On or off?

Use a power strip

Ensure power management features are enabled so your computer monitor will automatically go into sleep mode after a period of inactivity. Of course, a desktop or laptop computer can still suck 15-21 watts when idle. Turn it off instead and save even more electricity. Here are some general guidelines when deciding to turn off your personal computer:

• Turn off the monitor if you aren’t going to use your computer for more than 20 minutes. Many computers available today come with a sleep mode or power management feature. Using these features will save you up to $30 each year on your electricity bills. Enable the power management features when a computer is purchased. Note that screen savers are not energy savers.

• Turn off the computer if you’re not going to use your PC for more than two hours. Most PCs reach the end of their “useful” life due to advances in technology long before the effects of being switched on and off multiple times have a negative impact on their service life. The less time a PC is on, the longer it will “last.”

Make sure your monitors, printers and other accessories are on a power strip/surge protector. When this equipment is not in use for extended periods, turn off the switch on the power strip to prevent them from drawing power even when shut off.

Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. These vampire loads occur in most appliances that use electricity, such as DVD players, TVs, stereos, computers and kitchen appliances. Unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use.
