Gadgets, Games, and GirlsGadgets, Games, and GirlsPeople always said that “Stanley Woo knows what to do,” but for once in his life, Stan couldn’t choose. He stood at the gates of the Fantastic Gadgets and Games Kids’ Festival, staring at all the magnificent choices. For instance, there were games, such as Laser Tag and miniature golf. Kids waved from a hot air balloon in the sky, and a circus blared in the distance. There was also a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, and the frightening Gravity Eradicator.

The festival took Stan’s mind off his main concern. Stan’s worry was a girl named Millie. He developed a crush on Millie the moment she arrived at school. Now that the annual fifth-grade dance was approaching, Stan was too shy to ask Millie to go with him. He knew what to do, but he just couldn’t do it! Fortunately, the festival distracted him from this problem. However, at that very second, he glimpsed someone observing him from the Ferris wheel. Oh, no! It was Millie!

A Close CallA Close CallStan froze in his tracks, wondering what to do. It didn’t help that the Ferris wheel stopped just then to let Millie off. She began to approach Stan, who couldn’t escape. A funnel cake stand stood on one side of him and a cotton candy stand on the other. If he exited through the gates behind him, he couldn’t return to the event. Fortunately, Stan’s friend Bernie arrived at the festival that very instant. When Millie saw Bernie, she turned and walked away.

“Hey, Stan, let’s ride the Gravity Eradicator!” Bernie shouted.

Now there was another thing Stan knew he couldn’t do. It was the Gravity Eradicator. The ride was a circular room where you leaned against the wall. The whole room would spin, and the rotation would press you against the wall. Suddenly, the floor would drop down a little, and you’d find yourself hanging from the wall! The idea of this terrified Stan. However, he was even more frightened of talking to Millie!

The Gravity EradicatorThe Gravity EradicatorStan stood against the wall in the Gravity Eradicator, and as the room began to slowly rotate he became extremely anxious. To distract himself from his fear, he glanced around at the other people on the ride. Close by him, of all people, stood Millie! Stan became embarrassed because he didn’t want Millie to see him frightened. The room spun faster and faster. All of a sudden the floor began to drop. Right then, Millie gave Stan a gigantic smile.

His anxiety dropped away, and finally, Stanley Woo once again knew what to do.

“Will you go to the dance with me?” Stanley mouthed across the loud, spinning room.

Millie grinned, grabbed her twin ponytails, and lifted them to stick to the wall above her. They looked like antennae. Finally, she put her arms back by her side. Stan was confused, until he realized that Millie had made herself into the shape of a Y. That meant yes! The room slowed, the floor came back up, and Stan and Millie walked toward one another, smiling.
