In what ways did immigration affect America in the late 1800s?

• Ireland suffered famine in the early 1800s and then rebellion in the mid and late 1800s there were riots in Ireland mostly by the poor Catholic tenant farmers against the wealthy Protestant land owners.

• In the first part of this movie Joseph (Tom Cruise) is a poor tenant farmer in Ireland. His father is killed in an accident but Joseph blames the landlord Mr. Christy and sets off to kill him. He is discovered by Mr. Christie’s daughter , Shannon (Nicole Kidman), and is to be arrested BUT Shannon wants her independence and both Shannon and Joseph escape together on a boat bound for America. Shannon has brought valuable antique silver spoons to sell to help finance her new life in America.

While a majority of immigrants in the late 1800s came from Southern and Eastern Europe, there were many immigrants that came to America from Asia, especially China.

The transcontinental railroad was built from the east largely with Irish immigrants and from the west largely with Chinese immigrants.
