Niccolò Machiavelli“The Prince”Machiavelli observed city-state rulers of his day and produced guidelines for the acquisition and maintenance of power by absolute rule.

He felt that a ruler should be willing to do anything to maintain control without worrying about conscience.

Political Ideas of the Renaissance

Niccolò Machiavelli

Page 16: What was the Renaissance?

Better for a ruler to be feared than to be loved

Ruler should be quick and decisive in decision making

Ruler keeps power by any means necessary

The end justifies the meansBe good when possible, and

evil when necessary

1527)

AIM: Why did

Europeans want to go

out and explore the world?

God- Europeans see themselves as superior to others and feel

the need to spread Christianity throughout the world,

especially the “Heathens”

Glory- What better way to “show off” than to go out and

be the first to discover something new.

Gold- By controlling trade routes to the east, Europeans could cut out the middle men.

Also, they could try to find Gold in the new land.

Technology- New technology such as the caravel, astrolabe,

and compass.
