Lucy V. Barnsley September 11, 2017 Rockville, MD What Students Have Learned Here’s what’s happening….. What a great start we have had! We have been busy getting ourselves organized—our desks, binders, schedules, etc. Adjusting to the rigor of 3rd grade and our lunch and recess schedule (11:35-12:45) has been no easy task for our third graders, but most have all risen to the occasion! This past week, students have learned how to work effectively and respectfully to reach a group goal, and participate in collaborative discussions. Students also learned how to use an addition table to find the sum of two addends. Students have expressed their understanding of even and odd numbers to help them identify addition patterns. What Students Will Learn Social Studies: We will learn about the roles and responsibilities of effective citizens and practices associated with democratic principles. Science: We will be studying engineering and technology and physical science this year. Students will discover relationships between living things and the natural environment. They will also explore relationships among forces required to change an object’s motion. Reading: We will continue to ask and answer questions, identify characters and their actions, and decipher between the author’s point of view and the readers. Reading groups will begin within the next week. Mini-lessons on grammar and spelling patterns will also be part of our routine. Writing: The “Writer’s Notebook” will be introduced as a place to record thoughts, reflections, stories, etc. Writing about personal experiences will be the focus this week. Math: We are diving right into math! Students will demonstrate their proficiency in the relationship between rounding and place value. Support Learning At Home Read at least 20 minutes every night. Choose a realistic fiction story and act it out. Keep going: Change the age of the main character and act the story out again. What would be different? Select an overused word (such as “nice”). Set a timer and see who can come up with other words to replace it (such as “kind” or “friendly”). Work collaboratively to identify 5 numbers that would round to 400. Discuss the strategies used to round the numbers. Thank you for: Getting your child to school at 9:10; Communicating with us; Donating classroom supplies; Checking your child’s folder each day!
