One of the residents in the senior home where I work asked to use the telephone in my office one day. I had him come into my office to do this. He made his phone call and was attempting to ask about returning some items. I could see that he was having difficulty hearing the person on the other end of the phone. After several attempts of trying to understand the customer service representative, he became frustrated and handed the phone to me. He asked if I could handle the situation, which I did. After the phone call was completed I gently suggested that he may benefit from a hearing test. I informed him that there are hearing devices that may help him hear well. He decided that visiting an audiologist was a good idea. On the day of his appointment he became a little nervous. He asked me, “What should I expect at the hearing test? What will they have me do?” I informed him that they would ask him questions about his past and present health history. I told them that they would also examine his ears. Finally, they would have him sit in a booth and place headphones over his ears. The examiner will be sitting on the other side of the booth where she will deliver different sounds through various sides of the headphones. I instructed him that he should respond by raising his hand to the corresponding side that he heard the sound on. They would finish the visit by giving them their evaluation results
