What Shall I Do To Inherit Eternal Life?

• Do we really want to know the answer?– Do we ask this question because we want to

know what we yet lack?– Or, do we ask this question because we are

seeking confirmation?

Most of Us Lack Something• Something that hinders us from giving our

ALL to follow Jesus.

• Something that keeps us from living perfectly “in the Lord”.

• The question is: what is the one thing you lack? Mk. 10:17-31

• This is so hard to do.– It’s easy to mouth that we lack something, but

never concretely define what it is that we’re lacking.

– When someone else reveals what is lacking within us, however, we might become offended or deny any lacking of that sort.

First, We Have To Admit to “Lacking Something”

“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.” (Mark 10:21–22, NASB95)

“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: stop working overtime and spend that time with your family and edifying others, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who was addicted to his work.” (Workaholic 10:21–22)

“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: be slow to speak and quick to hear, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who was always gossiping.” (Big Talker 10:21–22)

“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: be industrious with your time and serve others in need, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was idle in his endeavors.” (Lazy 10:21–22)

Like the rich man – we may not have a problem with murder, adultery, stealing,

lying, defrauding, or dishonoring our parents (right!) – we may be blind to

what hinders us in our walk with God.

The Rich Man’s Problem vs. Our Problem

• We need to let go of the old man. Phil. 3:13– Those things that weigh us down. Heb. 12:1-2– Those things that are filled with the flesh.

Col. 3:5-8

• We need to take hold of the new man! Col. 3:10

To Lay Hold of the Goal…

• So, what is the one thing that you lack?

• Don’t walk away sorrowful like the rich man.

• “Let Go” and do the will of our Savior and follow Him. You will have treasure in heaven!
