What makes Fosse Bank unique? Each child is treated as an individual with his or her own talents, needs and dreams: perhaps a ten-year-old challenged by a senior school mathematics’ curriculum, or a young child reading regularly to Lizzie, our friendly black Labrador, to improve fluency. It is a fundamental aim of the school that the children are happy, and it becomes obvious that this is achieved when you visit the school. As children hone the skills required to enter good senior schools, they also benefit from a broad curriculum. We think we have a good balance of work and fun.

Traditional values

Good manners and consideration for others, showing leadership and taking initiative are encouraged. Pupils practise being independent and resilient learners, confident to try hard, and to bounce back if success is not immediate.

All the staff know the children well, and our holistic approach ensures they are brimming with confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

Intellectual curiosity and hard work will carry children through school and into the world beyond

Knowing this, our pupils are taught all the usual academic subjects with a strong focus on English and Mathematics. To this we add specialist teaching in French, Music and Physical Education. Outdoor Learning, particularly for younger children, Latin for the older children, and a variety of after school clubs are particular strengths of the school. Fosse Bank pupils are motivated, challenged and stimulated.

Learning can be hard work but the rewards are immeasurable.

Inspectors said ‘Theywork well individually and collaboratively. In lessons, they are eager to answer questions and their reasoning skills are well developed.’

A school for imaginative children

The Arts

Drama, music and art allow pupils to explore their creativity. As part of the curriculum, all six-year-olds learn to play the recorder, and seven-year-old pupils benefit from class violin lessons. Individual lessons in piano, stringed and wind instruments, percussion and singing are popular. The opportunity to be part of the choir and the orchestra and half-termly school concerts encourages confidence in our young musicians. Children enjoy many opportunities to take part in drama productions, and the annual school musical involves every child. Regular visits to art galleries, concerts and plays are part of the curriculum.

Sport for all

Under the supervision of specialist teachers, all children in the junior years play football, tag rugby, rounders, netball, cricket, hockey and practise athletics, and all have the opportunity to play in matches against local schools. We are fortunate in having tennis courts, a sports hall for gymnastics, and an indoor pool where swimming is taught weekly from Kindergarten upwards.

Extra-curricular clubs including karate, ballet, tap dancing, running and football all support the lively sports curriculum.

The school is set in twenty six acres of beautiful grounds providing plenty of opportunities to run and jump, whether in formal races or just for fun.

“I love rugby because it’s fun and muddy, you can go to a huge tournament, or maybe just one team versus another. We win a lot and it’s really exciting.”

We appreciate that sending your three-year-old to school is a big step for you and your child. We work closely with parents through daily communication between us via the child’s home/school book, a chat or email. Regular social events are part of the school calendar for pupils and for parents, fostering the family atmosphere in this single form entry school.

Meetings are tailored to fit working parents, who also find the ten minute walk to the railway station an advantage. Breakfast Club and After School Club, as well as being pleasurable sociable activities in themselves, also help parents balance work and home.
