Everyone will participate in each of these roles
Case Discussion Goals
Help the case-writer reflect on and learn from a leadership challenge or experience
Help the discussion leader refine his/her facilitation skills to maximize the learning and usefulness for case-writer.
Developing a clear agenda Managing the discussion Bringing the conversation to tangible insights and ideas.
Help the team members refine their coaching and feedback skills: clarity and relevance (“being heard”)
Case Discussion Responsibilities
Before day of case discussion L: Discusses case with case writer. Reviews and tailors case
discussion flow
Case Discussion Flow W: Summarizes Leadership Challenge, what s/he hopes to
learn (5) L: Facilitates team discussion of case, using attached
questions (40)
W: Summarizes, shares overall impressions about discussion(5)
All: Fill out feedback forms (5)
Discussion Flow: Questions to discuss
1. What leadership approaches or practices did you observe?
2. What was the connection between what the person was saying and feeling?
3. What was at stake for the case-writer? What were her/his goals? Were there other needs at work?

4. What is the pattern of inquiry and advocacy?
5. What was effective in the leader’s dialogue and why?
6. What was not effective in the leader’s dialogue and why?
7. What counsel would you give the leader?
Role of Effective Team Member
Offer support, responsiveness, caring, balance of advocacy/inquiry
Stay focused on what the case writer needs and wants, not what you have to say!
Assist the team in staying on track Be open and honest, but sensitive and tactful Be patient: all learning may not happen now
