How can I get back to California?
Why are cities the way they are?
Why are cities the way they are?
• Who decides what gets built where?• When someone says, “I’ve got a plan,” what
do they mean? • What happens if we don’t plan?• Why are we willing to accept restrictions on
what we can do with our own land?• How do we ensure that environmental
impacts are adequately considered?
Why are these questions especially important for California?

“How to meet the needs of more people in California, while at the same time respecting fundamental limits on our tax dollars and natural resources is one of the inexorable challenges we face.”
- Governor Jerry Brown, 1978
How do we plan for and manage this growth, in such a way as to preserve
and protect all that is good about California?
Where is growth going?

What is the scientific term for this?
Sprawl is… “the process in which the spread of development across the landscape far outpaces population growth.”
– “Measuring Sprawl and Its Impacts”

Density = persons per square mile
“The landscape Sprawl creates has four dimensions: a population that is widely dispersed in low density development; rigidly separatedhomes, shops, and workplaces; a network of roads marked by huge blocks and poor access; and a
lack of well-defined, thriving activity centers, such as downtowns and town centers.”

Why worry about sprawl?
Sprawl
Less walking
More driving
More pavement
More energy consumption
More built space
More pollution
Less exercise
Less green space
Worse Quality of Life
But is it all bad…?

Activists Fight Green Projects, Seeing U.N. Plot
Across the country, activists with ties to the Tea Party are railing against all sorts of local and state efforts to control sprawl and conserve energy. They brand government action for things like expanding public transportation routes and preserving open space as part of a United Nations-led conspiracy to deny property rights and herd citizens toward cities.
