What is the Best Manicure for You?

It isn't just as simple as walking into a nail salon and getting your nails buffed, polished, and painted.

There is a slew of types of manicures out there but how do you know which one is right for you? Take a look at the variety of manicures out there and decide for yourself!

This manicure is simply taming your cuticles, soaking your hands, and shaping the nails. Your technician will apply a lotion to your hands and then have you soak them for about five minutes in warm water.

Basic Manicure

They will then trim and tame your cuticles and then give your hands a massage (the best part) with a moisturizing lotion.

You can choose the shape of your nails: square, oval, or a combination of the two. Your nails will be buffed and the polish will be added. A basic manicure is just that and doesn't include any extra frills.

French Manicure

You get all of the above but instead of a coloured polish, you will have a clear, beige, or pale pink polish put on your nail and then a bright white tip added.

A reverse French manicure is where your technician will add a darker color the "half moon" portion of your nails while the rest of the nail is the neutral beige/pink.

Gel Manicure

Gel manicures last longer than traditional manicures. All of the steps of the basic mani are followed but the polish is a special gel that has to be UV cured after application.

This polish lasts days longer than traditional polish and is more resistant to chipping and peeling.

Paraffin Manicure

If your hands are dry, cracked, and overworked, consider adding a paraffin treatment to your mani. Your hands will be coated in a nourishing paraffin wax to restore hydration and soften your skin.

Hot Stone Massage Manicure

There's really no aesthetic purpose to the hot stones except as an indulgence. The hot stones are placed over your hands for heat and relaxation.

Acrylic Nails

Your technician will mix a liquid with a powder and then brush it onto your nails. As it's exposed to the air, it will begin to harden.

You might notice a strong unpleasant odor that's harmless when the room is well ventilated. You can have the acrylics cover just the nail or you can ask to have them extended for a longer, more sculpted nail.

Acrylics will grow out with your nails and you'll need to have them filled in every two to three weeks. For the removal, they'll soak your hands for about fifteen minutes in nail polish remover and gently pry them off.

Ripping these off at home can leave your weakened nail prone to bacterial and fungal infections, so always have them removed in a nail salon.

Gel Nails

The gel is painted onto your nails and is cured underneath a UV light for about two minutes per hand. Like acrylics, gel grows out with your nails and will need to be filled every three weeks or so.

The technician will

file down the space between the gel and your nail bed and refill them in with moreproduct.

Gel lasts longer than acrylic nails and is more resistant to chipping and cracking. If the seal between the gel and the nail is broken, it can leave your nail prone to bacterial or fungal infections.

Silk Nails

Silk nail wraps are used to strengthen weak nails or to repair a badly cracked nail. Strips of silk fabric are glued to your nail and should be left in place for two to three weeks.Your technician will decide at your next visit whether they're ready to be removed or if the silk needs to be replaced.
