Reading Reading is the brain giving meaning to what
the eyes are seeing It is not just understanding words but also
understanding phrases, sentences, and paragraphs as a whole.
Reading is a skill. Reading is a way to learn. It is the ability of the eyes to look at words
or images and give meaning to it. It is an interaction between the one who
writes and the one who reads as the writer tries to paint an image into the readers mind.
What is reading?
Reading is making meaning from print. It requires that we:
Identify the words in print – a process called word recognition
Construct an understanding from them – a process called comprehension
Coordinate identifying words and making meaning so that reading is automatic and accurate – an achievement called fluency
