What is PBL? How does it work at Swansea Public School?
Information
for parents
and the
community.
BE SAFE BE RESPONSIBLE BE RESPECTFUL
So what is PBL anyway? PBL stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. It is a problem
solving framework that addresses: social, behavioural and
academic outcomes. It is a consistent and user friendly school-wide
system of support that helps define, teach and support appropriate
student behaviours, creating a positive school environment.
Systems: collaboratively, our staff members work with students to
develop expectations, consistency guides, interventions, lessons
and signage to ensure staff/student voice is reflected.
Data: Each week our data is analysed to determine which students
require intervention and which students require recognition.
Practice: Our staff and student teams are trained to deliver and
consistently implement the language of our school vision, values
and expectations across all areas of school life.
ALL of our PBL materials are developed in consultation with our
staff and students. It is our aim to create an open and transparent
system that is inclusive of all.
Outcomes
"We believe Swansea Public School should promote the
development of each child's full potential by providing a quality
education for all students at the school. An innovative learning
community, we prepare our students both academically and
socially for a rapidly changing world, whilst enabling the
students to shape their own future
Further, our vision is embedded within the "Melbourne
declaration on educational Goals for Young Australians in which
schools play a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical,
social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development
and wellbeing of young Australians.
Life-long learning behaviours for the 21st Century and high
achievement are achievable through nurturing one another in a
collaborative and creative learning environment whilst fostering
genuine relationships within a supportive community.

To ensure our students are supported in their endeavours to adhere to our values and
expectations, we have developed a series of interventions that occur if a student is identified as
struggling to comply.
STRATEGIES AND PRACTICES TO MANAGE INAPPROPRIATE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR
Staff manage behaviour by firstly a verbal warning, secondly a visual warning on the PBL plates, thirdly the student is sent to a time out area (5-10 minutes) in the classroom where the teacher aims to resolve the issue. If the student fails to change their behaviour the student is sent to a buddy class with a PINK slip which describes their behaviour issue. The student is returned to the teacher to make good choices. If the behaviour continues the student is sent to the planning room at lunch time or to the off class executive with the PINK slip after the lunch time period. Teachers give these when students misbehave in the classroom. The misbehaviour is noted on the pink slip and may lead to the student attending the Planning Room.
Students may be sent to the Planning Room as a result of:
An incident or a series of incidents noted on a pink slip.
A single serious incident, e.g. bullying.
Two noted incidents in a week in the Playground Folder.
Students will then attend the Planning Room. Students MUST be entered into SENTRAL by the end of the day to attend Planning Room on the next day.
The Planning Room
When a student attends the Planning room the student will be counselled about:
The exact nature and circumstance of their behaviour
The need or needs that they were trying to fulfil in using that behaviour
Alternative behaviours available to them that could help them meet those needs
Their beliefs about the way that they should behave in particular circumstances
The behaviours that they would choose the next time they found themselves in similar circumstances.
Parents or caregivers are informed by letter each time that a student attends the Planning
Room. The letter must be signed by the parent and returned to school
The management of students who attend the Planning Room will be on a case by case basis
with consequences to suit the incident, the determined level of inappropriate behaviour, the
number of times that the student has been to the Planning Room and the effects of the
behaviour on other students and teachers.
Such consequences may include:
An apology, written or verba l to the victim or teacher
The development of personal goals and a personal commitment to improve behaviour
Risk assessment for student behaviour
The establishment of an individual behaviour management plan
Further sessions in the Planning room
Withdrawal from playground activities
Our school record keeping software (SENTRAL) is monitored weekly to ensure swift intervention if required.

the potential to harm the health and safety of any person on its premises .

What do I wear for sport?
We at Swansea Public School believe
strongly in the student voice and we
encourage all students to become
actively involved a nd contribute to the
