Transcript of What is our destination? - Clover...

Maybe you have never been to church, been attending all your life, or you are just getting back into it after a long break. Wherever you are in your journey, we are praying you find a place to call home and, more importantly, a relationship with Jesus Christ.

To that end, we want to offer you some insight into Gateway’s church family and information you will hopefully find helpful in taking the key steps needed to connect with your brothers and sisters in Christ here.

- Pastor Karl

If it is God’s will, over the next 5 years we will see 500 baptized into Christ and added to God’s family. This is our goal. If each one of us leads ONE person to Jesus Christ in the next 5 years—we will be living out God’s passion to seek and save the lost. We must be a church driven with a desire to lead people to Jesus. Inviting our family, friends, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ is why God established His Church.

This vision will require fervent prayer, a united church, and a servant’s heart. This vision will impact our personal lives and the life of Gateway.

November 2013

The different stages of a tree are great pictures of what it means to be transformed into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. In one year we can see a tree change through different seasons—blossoming, becoming strong and full, and eventually bearing fruit. You, as part of God’s church, can be vibrant with new life, full of sustaining growth, and yielding the fruit of God’s work in your life. At each stage of this personal transformation process, we offer a course and a decision on your part to go deeper in your relationship with Christ.

Live For Christ is for those who are considering making Jesus Christ their Lord and/or making Gateway their church home (also open to members who have not yet taken the course). This class is offered on Sunday, September 8, October 27, and November 17, during the 8:30 worship service.*

Grow In Christ, the second course, is open to those who have completed the Live for Christ course. This is the right class for those who are ready to step up to the next level in their spiritual maturity. It is offered every other month, with the next offerings during the first worship service on Sunday, November 3, during the 8:30 worship service.*

Serve Like Christ is our third course in the series. This class helps you identify and use the gifts and talents that God has given you in the right ministry area that fits you. If you have completed the Live for Christ and Grow in Christ courses, this is the next step. This class will be offered on Sunday, October 20, during the 8:30 worship service.*

*Sign-up sheets for all three courses can be found on the red kiosk behind the information desk in the Crossection.

Just as everyone matures at different growth rates physically, we all go through different stages of spiritual growth. Our desire is for you to continue growing in your understanding of who God is, deepening your relationship with Him. All are welcome to try any Gateway Growth Group on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and/or throughout the week.

8:30 AM (1st or 2nd Sunday only) S.U.B.M.I.T. — Supporting Underground Believers/Martyrs In Trials (Room 106) Teacher: Ashley Jeralds What does it mean to be persecuted for your faith? Is persecution the same in every country? How can I pray specifically for someone or something I know nothing about? This class will answer those questions for you and more. Every month we focus on a different country, learning about the culture, religion, government, and persecution believers experience there, and pray for them. As we travel the world you will find faith, strength, encouragement, and hope from the testimonies of believers as we share in their victories and their suffering. Fall 2013 Study: Persecution in Monitored Countries

SUNDAY 9:45 AM ANNEX College Group (Room 110) Teacher: Francisco Reynoso Come walk through the book of Proverbs with us. Our goal is to get insight into God's wisdom and learn how to have a better approach to every circumstance we face in life. We will also learn how we can set ourselves apart from typical society by adopting God-like behavior. All college-age students (18-23) are invited to join together in this small group setting to build each other up in Christ. Fall 2013 Study: Book of Proverbs

Logos (Room 210) Teachers: Jim Kremer, Mike Biggs, Bruce Atkins The Logos class continues to work through the Gospel of John, the most recommended book of the Bible for new Christians to study. We invite new Christians, or Christians who have not done a Bible study in some time, to join us. Come discover what our God has planned for us all! Fall 2013 Study: Gospel of John

Seekers (Room 112) Teachers: Tony Hartsfield & Julian Cosentino The title for many TV shows in recent years has been “man vs. ___”, as in Man vs. Wild or Man vs. Food, the first showing how well a person can survive harsh conditions and the second with a protagonist eating all sorts of strange foods. Perhaps when we read the Bible, we think the title Man vs. God would be appropriate! During this quarter, we will examine God’s creative work and how He handled—and resolved—the ongoing conflict with His creation. Fall 2013 Study: First Things (Genesis, Exodus, Psalm 104)

Women’s Group (Room 106) Teachers: Paula Reed & Elaine Lewallen In this Women's study group, we seek to better understand the character of God and to discover the challenges and applications of His Word to our daily lives. Through prayer and sharing we find encouragement and accountability. Our current study, “Becoming a Woman of Faith,” focuses on God's faithfulness and how He intends for us to grow in faith and relationship with Him. Fall 2013 Study: Becoming a Woman of Faith

11:00 AM Carpe Diem (Room 210) Teachers: Bjorn Thommesen & Barry Jeralds In the mood for an upbeat study? Like to have mysteries explained? Intrigued by controversial topics? Have you ever wondered "now what?" after hearing the Good News of what Jesus did for us? If so, seize the day with the Carpe Diem class as we study the book Ephesians this fall! All are welcome to join us as we pray, study, fellowship, and serve. Fall 2013 Study: Book of Ephesians

H.A.T.S.: HArd Teachings In Scripture (Teen Warehouse) Teachers: Brian Johnson & Josh Gillespie Apocalypsis—the Book of Revelation. Who are the 144,000? What is the difference between trumpets, bowls, and seals? What are the seven thunders and what did they say? Who is the Harlot of Babylon? Come join us on a special, two-semester study of the book of Revelation, chapter by chapter, church by church. Fall 2013 Study: Apocalysis: Book of Revelation

Practical, Spiritual Parenting (Room 112) Teachers: Fred & Tara Boggs Who does God require me/us to be as parents? How will I/we create environments in the home for Him to be at work in the unique child/ren He has entrusted to me/us? Join us as we discuss various topics related to parenting children from birth through high school. Fall 2013 Study: Practical, Spiritual Parenting

Servants of God (Room 106) Teachers: John & Angie Turigliatto Ever feel like the Sunday sermon was written especially for you? Ever wish there was more time to discuss how the scriptures apply to your life? We will be taking time this quarter to dive deeper into the morning sermon each week. Join us! Fall 2013 Study: Sermon Extension

Women’s Daytime Study (Warehouse) Facilitators: Jessie Hough & Erin Feinstein The women’s daytime study will begin on Tuesday, September 24. Our study topic this fall is Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A Study of David, by Kay Arthur, Beth Moore, and Priscilla Shirer. This group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, from 9:30-11:30 am, in The Warehouse, with childcare provided. Please sign up so workbooks can be ordered and childcare arranged; a sign-up sheet is available at the red kiosk in the Crossection. Fall 2013 Study: Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A Study of David

Our Fall 2013 Wednesday Night Life semester runs Sept. 4—Nov. 20.

Apologetics & Outreach Track Facilitator: BJ Browning Apologetics, a rational defense of the Christian faith, is a much-needed ingredient in every Christian’s faith life. Join us as we listen to Ravi Zacharias’ lectures, sermons, and debates, and then discuss how we can best apply the information in our own lives. This track is open to both men and women.

Highest Praise Adult Ensemble/Choir Track Facilitator: Marcia Haverly Gateway’s Adult choir, Highest Praise, combines a love for singing with a desire to assist worshippers in uniting hearts, minds, and spirits passionately in glorifying Jesus. Join us as we use God’s gift of music to draw others with us into an encounter with the living God.

Men's Leadership Study Track Facilitators: Gateway’s Elders What does it mean to be an effective servant leader? How do you respond to Jesus’ call to follow Him? What are the principles of servant leadership embodied in the “not so with you” phrase found in Matthew 10:25-28 and how can we embrace and implement them? Join the Gateway leadership team as we learn how to better Lead Like Jesus in all aspects of our lives.

Women's Bible Study Track Facilitator: Juli Nelson Like everything else in the Bible, Gideon’s is a story about God and His people. His love for them, as well as His strength operating in spite of their weakness—even through their weakness. And because God's people includes you and me, Gideon's story is also about us—our lives, our doubts, our struggles, and our possibilities as believers. From a state of fear, weakness, and insecurity, Gideon emerged as Israel's hero, filled with God's presence and His passion for deliverance. This study will encourage you to recognize your weakness as the key that God gives you to unlock the full experience of His strength in your life.

During Gateway’s Fall 2013 Wednesday Night Life program, there are two special forum nights planned, one on September 25 and the other on November 6. Regular adult classes will not meet on these two evenings, so that all adults can hear our special guest speakers in the main sanctuary during a portion of our fellowship dinner and through our regular class time of 8:00 pm.

Our September 25 forum presenter will be Bill Federer, addressing the topic of America’s Christian history. Bill is a best-selling author and nationally-known speaker who has dedicated his life to researching America’s rich heritage of faith.

You are encouraged to invite your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors to all WNL events, especially our forum

evenings!

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Small Groups meet in homes, at church, in coffee shops, or workplaces in order to do life together. For someone seeking truth, it is a safe place to ask questions about who Jesus is, why He came, and what He desires from us. For a Christ follower, it is one of the most effective places to grow. A group can range from 4 to 16 people—all there to build accountable relationships and friendships. The goal of every Small Group is to help you grow in Christ by discovering real friendships, deep faith, and authentic community. How do I get into a group? If you are attending Gateway, joining a small group is a great next step to growing in Christ. We have groups meeting all over St. Louis throughout the week. The church office has contact information for each of these groups: Arnold Group Facilitators: Rob Ladage & Danny Nelson Meets Sundays at 6:00 pm; topic TBA (childcare available).

Ballwin Group Facilitators: Bjorn & Lore Thommesen Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 pm; currently viewing and discussing Randy Alcorn’s Heaven book and DVD series of the same name.

O’Fallon Group Facilitators: Brian & Jen Johnson Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 pm; currently studying Good News for Anxious Christians, or how to be a better spouse, parent, employee, and overall Christian (childcare available).

Young Adults Group Facilitators: Viktoryia & Jonathan Schnose The young adult group meets every other Friday at 7:00 pm for prayer, food, fellowship, and fun. Location and facilitator rotates each week; contact Viktoryia to get involved or find out more details.

How do I start a group in my home? Make arrangements with the 3G Team through Pastor Karl. Contact the church office to set up a time to discuss your plans.

Our main teen area is called The Warehouse. The Warehouse is where we have relevant conversations about God moving in teenage lives. Everything we do here is designed to reach middle and high school students where they are in life.

On Sunday mornings, we meet in The Warehouse for Collide Deep at 9:45 am, where we dive into God’s Word.

On Wednesday nights, we meet for Collide Live at 6:00 pm, where we learn how to put Biblical principles into our lives.

During the 9:45 am Sunday worship service, teens gather together in The Warehouse to dive deeper into God’s Word to learn how to grow in their relationship with Christ. Join other students your age in a conversation that is started straight from the Bible and led by an adult who will guide the conversation and pray one-on-one with you.

This is a great place to be on Sunday morning. We are going through a curriculum that will have us reading through the entire Bible over a 4-year time period. Join us each week as we learn about our great God through His Word.

During the school year, we pack The Warehouse with teens starting at 6:00 pm and we worship our God. This is where we learn Biblical principles to live by and learn to be fully devoted followers of Christ through teaching and relevant videos or dramas. Each Wednesday night COLLIDE LIVE includes hang time, small groups, and worship for middle school and high school students. We also have a couple of service projects planned during the semester to allow students the opportunity to share Christ’s love through an act of service in our community.

Our teens enjoy participating in SHINE, Gateway’s music and drama group for this age group through college, generally producing two performances each year. Practices are on various Sunday afternoons during the school year. See Laura Fletcher for details.

Pg 13

Teens and sponsors love to interact with each other outside of the church. In addition to individuals meeting for accountability and prayer, we will go on various trips during the upcoming months in larger groups.

FALL PLANS The COLLIDE Youth Ministry will be taking middle school and high school students to a conference in Kansas City Friday-Sunday, November 15-17, called Oasis. Designed by Manhattan Christian College, Oasis was asked to join forces this fall with SICOM (Student International Conference On Missions), known nationwide as the student version of the National Missionary Convention. This is going to be a weekend that your student will remember forever.

SPRING RETREAT One of our COLLIDE students’ favorite events is our biennial spring purity retreat. Students will spend a weekend in March together, learning from each other, college students, host homes, and speakers.

SUMMER PLANS Middle School students will attend High Hill Christian Camp in 2014. Plan to come to an incredible “week-of-all-weeks” to grow closer to God, develop new friendships, and have fun! More details available in the spring.

High School students will go to a CIY conference in Michigan in the summer of 2014. Watch for more details on this life-changing event.

OTHER TRIPS As specifics are finalized for each of the following, they will be communicated to teens and parents:

· Senior Trip · Service Opportunities · Campus visits · Weekend conference at a Bible College

For more details or answers to questions about the student ministry, you can call Josh, email Josh or the office, or just drop by and someone will know what is going on! To find out how to volunteer your time and talent with the teens, contact Josh Hough, Youth Pastor. He looks forward to hearing from you.

College students ages 18-23 are invited to Annex, a ministry dedicated to creating a connection for New Life, New Community, and New Change for you. We meet as a small group on Sunday mornings during the 9:45 am worship hour in Room #110. We hope you will come get acquainted with other peers and be encouraged. For more information, please send an email to [email protected].

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8

At Gateway, we need everybody’s help in order to serve like Christ–including yours. Many of us come to Gateway with a background of skills and interests (music, drama, construction, food, technical, computers, sports, etc.) that can be used to help others. Whether you are brand new to church, or a mature believer, there are volunteer opportunities where you can serve. Please keep in mind though, that because Gateway exists to “Live for Christ, Grow in Christ, and Serve like Christ,” it is essential that people seeking to volunteer must first be committed to that end. Some of the opportunities to serve have requirements due to the nature of the role and its direct influence on individuals in God’s church. We look forward to helping you discover how God has wired you to Serve Like Christ.

The church was always meant to serve the community in which it finds itself. For Gateway, this is greater St. Louis—North, South, and West County. Because we desire to see people in our city experience Christ’s love firsthand, we deliberately pursue key partnerships with ministries through which to share this love. There are many needs—physical, relational, emotional, financial, and spiritual—and it is our calling to meet those needs like Christ.

Angel Tree Ministry (through Salvation Army) We invite Gateway families to adopt needy St. Louis children at Christmas time and bring gifts to church for them.

Armed Forces Care We send care packages to any Gateway family member serving in the military in the U.S. or overseas around Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, in addition to sending birthday cards and notes to help them stay connected to their church family.

Bread Basket Food Pantry We provide food, paper products, and toiletries for those in need, in our church family and our community, helping fill the shelves of greater St. Louis area food pantries. We also collect school supplies and winter apparel on a seasonal basis.

Gateway GIVE (a Gateway initiative) Each December we distribute gift cards to our congregation to purchase supplies for Circle of Concern’s food pantry and then deliver them as a group.

High Hill Christian Camp Work Day www.highhillcamp.org We support High Hill Camp through collecting donated items, plus a yearly workday, doing major renovation projects, as well as clean-up and minor repairs, to prepare for summertime.

Rebuilding Together www.rebuildingtogether-stl.org A Gateway team comes together to repair, renovate, and restore a needy St. Louis city home on one set day each year, rain or shine, all skill levels needed.

Shiloh Family Mission www.shilohranch.org Each September a group of Gateway families heads to Shelbina, Missouri to serve at Shiloh Christian Children’s Home, doing service projects together.

S.W.E.R.V.E. (a Gateway initiative) www.gccstl.org Each year, our Gateway family SWERVEs from our normal Sunday morning worship routine, doing various service projects in our community as families.
