Dear Conference Participants and Attendees,
It is with great excitement that I welcome you to our second A Mindful Miami Conference!
Ever since I shared my intention to offer this conference, interest and enthusiasm began to swell to a level I could never have imagined! This gathering is dedicated to disseminating the seeds of mindfulness throughout Miami to benefit our entire community of children.
I am deeply grateful to the distinguished presenters and pillars of our community who will be sharing their expertise here today. And I am thrilled to welcome the national trainers who are joining us from out of town - George Mumford, our Keynote Speaker, along with Ferris Buck Urbanowski and Susan Woods, leading international MBSR/MBCT professional trainers.
It is with the deepest respect that the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, who pioneered the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program in 1979 at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School, is acknowledged. His dedication to widening the circle of mindfulness to alleviate suffering has led to remarkable professional interest. It is upon his shoulders that we all stand.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our generous sponsors and community partners for their heartfelt support. Without them we would not all be gathered here.
Please help me thank my Co-Chair Maria Shojaee, Marketing Chair Renee Lopez-Cantera, and our hardworking volunteer Conference Committee who committed tireless effort to making this a successful event.
Thank you, especially, for joining us here today! Perhaps this gathering of hearts and minds will launch a dialogue and ignite a call to action to becoming more mindful ourselves, the first step toward “A Mindful Miami.” Can we not spearhead a quiet evolution and become a national model for what it means to be a “mindful community?”
Sincerely,
Valerie York-Zimmerman Conference Co-Chair President, Mindful Kids Miami
Thank YouWhat is Mindfulness?
There are two well-known definitions of mindfulness. Perhaps the most recognized is:
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. Professor of Medicine emeritus University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society
What we say to children is:
“Mindfulness is paying attention to your life, here and now, with kindness and curiosity.”
Mindfulness is a basic human quality which intentionally cultivates moment-to-moment attention. The practice of mindfulness supports and strengthens the capacity of the mind to be fully in the present moment instead of controlled by habits of worrying about the future or being stuck in the past. Without mindfulness, the mind is like a monkey swinging from one branch to another, leaping from thought to thought or one association to another. The practice gently brings the mind back to the anchor of attention again and again. The intention is not to get rid of sensations, feelings or thoughts. It is to cultivate a deeper awareness of one’s direct experience with acceptance and friendly curiosity unobscured by judgments.
The internationally acclaimed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program, pioneered in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is the foundational training designed to teach people how to develop and cultivate a personal practice of mindfulness. MBSR is a secular discipline emphasizing compassion.
Clinical studies demonstrate the efficacy and value of mindfulness in decreasing physical and psychological symptoms. Mindfulness-Based Interventions have been shown to be helpful in reducing anxiety, preventing depression relapse, helping with sleep and eating disorders, preventing relapse of substance abuse, improving focus and concentration, improving relationship skills, strengthening emotional resilience, developing relaxation, and deepening a sense of wellbeing.

Dear Speakers, Sponsors, Community Partners, and Friends,
As Co-Chair of “A Mindful Miami Conference”, I would like to personally welcome each of you to today’s conference. It’s an exciting time for Mindfulness and is a privilege and honor to be a part of such a transforming platform.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to each of the distinguished speakers, panelists, and moderators for sharing their expertise to help expand the awareness of Mindfulness. I would also like to
express my sincere appreciation to the sponsors and community partners for their unconditional support of Mindful Kids Miami and UMindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. To colleagues, friends, and guests, your presence is invaluable. To the amazing planning committee, thank you for your time and contributions, it takes a village!
Today, you will have the opportunity to acquaint yourself with how mindfulness practice could help manage emotions to improve your personal wellbeing. It is our mission to disseminate knowledge about mindfulness, provide a forum for dialogue, and implement programs that promote mental health for children and the community at large. The conference has been divided into four distinct segments: The Science of Mindfulness, Mindfulness in Healthcare, Mindfulness in Education, and Mindfulness in Criminal Justice and Mental Health. The segments will discuss the benefits of implementing mindfulness practice in our daily life. It is my hope that you find the information presented both, engaging and energizing.
You are truly our greatest asset to help format the future for a Mindful Miami. Without your leadership and support, we could not accomplish what we do. My personal respect and thanks goes out to all of you.
Most sincerely,
Maria L. Shojaee, MBA Conference Co-Chair Adjunct Faculty, UM School of Nursing and Health Studies Member, UMindfulness Research and Practice Initiative

On November 2, 2011 Mindful Kids Miami (MKM) began teaching its first pilot program in the form of an after-school program to disadvantaged/underserved school children from Tucker and Carver Elementary Schools. The children from grades 2 through 5 were brought into The Kampong after school from The Barnyard in the West Grove. The program was very successful and continues to flourish.
In December of 2011, MKM received its 501(c)(3) status and became a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Its mission is to make available age-appropriate mindfulness-based training for the benefit of all children and teens, grades Pre-K through 12, in Miami-Dade schools, hospitals, healthcare centers, and institutional settings.
Research demonstrates that both privileged and underprivileged children are experi-encing escalating levels of stress impairing brain development, the ability to learn, and behavior. Studies show that mindfulness training for children and teens:
• Increases Attention and Focus – resulting in higher academic achievement• Reduces Stress – allowing kids to learn more and perform better• Improves Impulse Control – increasing teaching time in the classroom• Develops Emotional Regulation – teaching chil-dren to “respond” rather than “react”• Builds Empathy and Compassion – cultivating tolerance of cultural, religious, and sexual diversity as well as reducing cruelty, bullying, and violence.
It has become apparent to experts throughout the country that the best way to teach mindfulness to children and teens is for adults to embody the essence of mindfulness through a calm, moment-to-moment awareness and kind presence. Like other leading organizations, MKM focuses on skillful mindfulness-based training for educators, healthcare providers, youth services providers, and child advocates who can model mindfulness as well as teach fun, age-appropriate practices, games, and skills to chil-dren. MKM’s approach is highly experiential. It emphasizes practicing mindfulness and loving kindness.
Mindfulness is like swimming. You can’t learn how to swim by standing on the side of the pool or having someone lecture you about swimming. You have to jump in the water and start to paddle along with the other kids.

1. Mindfulness in Healthcare
Mindfulness training benefits both healthcare providers and their patients. Researchers have firmly established the relationship between physical health and psychological functioning. Mindfulness practices are proven to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and fear in populations with cancer and chronic illness. Now, increasing evidence is documenting the relationship between mindfulness practices and the structure of our genes. Physicians are now using meditation alongside medication in clinical settings with adults and children alike.
Health systems that incorporate mindfulness for physicians experience less burnout and more compassionate care. Research publications regarding mindfulness are increasing exponentially, further unraveling the dynamic connection between body and mind, and contributing to a renewed focus on implementing positive health behaviors towards optimal wellness in healthcare.

2. Mindfulness in Education
Research demonstrates that integrating mindfulness training into Pre-K through 12 education significantly benefits educators and students. It has been shown to: (1) increase attention and focus (2) reduce stress (3) improve impulse control (4) develop emotional regulation (5) build tolerance and compassion leading to happier and safer schools.

3. Mindfulness in Criminal Justice and Mental Illness
The failure to identify, diagnose and treat childhood trauma significantly contributes to the over-representation of people with mental illnesses in the criminal justice system. Miami-Dade County has the highest percentage of people with mental illnesses of any urban community in the United States. 9.1% of Miami-Dade County’s general population has a serious mental illness. This is 2-3 times the national average and equates to 155,000 adults and 55,000 children. Trauma is one of the greatest risk factors for criminal justice involvement for people with mental illnesses.
In fact, 92% of all women in jail with a serious mental illness have suffered trauma – mostly sexual abuse as children. 75% of men in jail with serious mental illnesses also have suffered from trauma. Additionally, approximately 80% of people with mental illnesses have a co-occurring disorder – meaning they have both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder placing them at an extremely high risk of incarceration.
Yet, little if any trauma related services, including mindfulness, has been made available to this vulnerable population. Aside from the extraordinary human cost and suffering to the individual and their family, the economic costs are exorbitant and a waste of critical tax dollars. Appropriate treatment that helps heal and guide these individuals is a much better approach that will ultimately improve public safety, save critical tax dollars and will provide true hope and opportunity for people with mental illnesses.

•Examine Public Health issues resulting from neglect, abuse, trauma, drugs, and violence. Demonstrate how mindfulness practice initiatives help youth and adults to communicate and self-regulate emotionally, without anger or violence
• Explain how mindfulness practice improves and enhances teamwork, leadership, communication, and relationships for college students, athletes in the playing field, and professionals in the work place.
• Recognize how trauma, substance abuse, and homelessness are symptoms of a larger set of factors which contribute to repeated involvement in the justice system- serious and persistent mental illness.
• Examine how a mindfulness-based intervention during early childhood trauma might be beneficial and effective.
• Evaluate how our community is in the midst of a mental health crisis and how our community system of dealing with the crisis is antiquated, fragmented, and grossly inadequate.
