What Is Freewriting?
• Freewriting is a way of creating ideas for a paper by writing continuously about a topic -- without worrying about grammar, spelling, or organization.
Here’s an ExampleI want the students to see the value of freewriting. Key will be to choose a topic that is both broad enough and interesting enough -- interesting enough because I don’t want people saying they can’t think of anything to say, and broad enough so that they can go in many directions. Many students will stress out as they did last semester. Some way to make it fun? Thirty things I hate about Philadelphia. Thirty things I love about Philadelphia.
You Can Also Just Create a List
• Value of freewriting.• Topic must be broad enough to generate ideas.• Must be interesting too.• Fight writer’s block: something fun and
interesting.• 30 things I love about Philly, 30 things I hate (too
broad).
Let’s Make Something Out of the FreewritingYour assignment is to write a two-page, typed,
double-spaced essay in which you outline a four-year plan for Mayor John Street. The content for this paper can be humorous, but must be well-organized.
To write this assignment, I want you to first use the freewriting drafting technique. YOU MUST HAND IN YOUR FREEWRITING DRAFT WITH YOUR FINAL PAPER.
