Lesson 2: Properties of Matter
What is a Property?
A property is a characteristic that
describes an object or a substance.
All matter can be described based on its
physical properties and its chemical properties.
Physical properties are characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of
the object or substance.
Examples of Physical Properties Include:• Color• Texture• Hardness• Density• Flexibility• Freezing Point• Melting Point• Boiling Point
Chemical properties are characteristics that can be observed as a result of a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction always
results in a change to the substance that is reacted on.
Examples of ChemicalProperties Include:
• Oxidation• Flammability• Heat of Combustion• Reactivity• Acidity or Alkalinity (pH)• Toxicity• Chemical Stability

Lesson 2: Properties of MatterKey Questions:
1) What is the difference between physical and chemical properties of matter? Give examples of each.
2) Why are understanding a substance’s physical and chemical properties important?
