What is a good warm up?

Warming up serves several purposes. First, it allows you to re-aquaint yourself with your instrument each day. As you play, you physically warm your instrument, bringing it to optimum playing temperature. Playing exercises like long tones and slurs build physical endurance and flexibility in your embouchure. Incorporating fingering drills and exercises into you warm up routine also helps make these motions easier each day.

But warming up is also for your ears and your mind as well. When playing long tones, listen to yourself (are you playing with your best tone?), the players on either side of you (are you blending in with their sound?), and the ensemble (is your volume appropriately balanced to the other instruments?). Listen to the way your pitch matches others every time you play, and try to determine if your sound is lower, higher, or the same as others. If it's different, make a slight adjustment in air or embouchure while playing and see if that helps. If you're not sure which way to adjust, guess! Try adjusting one way - if that makes the pitch match better, it was correct; if it made it worse, you should adjust the other way. Listen for and pratice good attacks to each note, followed by clean releases, together with the ensemble.

A good warm up should include: Long tones (more for brass players) Lip slurs Technique exercises (in keys you'll be playing in) Chorales (for ensemble listening) Tuning (only after you've played a bit).

Doing some form of the above combinations every time you sit down to play will always result in a better practice session or performance, and will improve your playing!

Pitch tendancies - notes on your instrument that tend to sound either sharp or flat are indicated in these long tone exercises by a (#) for sharp and a (b) for flat. Don't confuse these with the accidentals in front of the notes, however.

Different ways to vary this exercise include the following:

Bb INTONATION EXERCISE

4

Intonation is about more than just matching one note. In the exercises below, aim to not only match the starting note in each group, but also aim for the changing middle notes.

Remember to keep your air moving through the slur.

Work to balance the volume of the upper and lower notes.

Remember to adjust air speed and embouchure to change register.
