What does interRAI interoperability look like – New Zealand’s story
Adam Prybyl, VP, Momentum Healthware Inc.
Interoperability - The New Zealand Experience • Country Information
• Population: 4.677m1
• Population 65 Years and Over: 686,4001
• District Health Boards: 20
• Aged Residential Care Facilities: 700+
• Needs identified • Cross sector Comprehensive Clinical Assessment
• National assessment system for simplicity
• Make “clinically rich data, (that also happens to be standardized, evidence based and comprehensive), available to clinical staff at the time they need it in their local clinical system in a way that is least disruptive to their workflow”2

Interoperability - The New Zealand Experience • Solutions cont’d
• 2014 - New Zealand MoH implementation of the HL7-CDA standard for interRAI® developed – Approved by NZ Standards body (HISO), endorsed by interRAI®, and supported with set of LOINC codes1
No jurisdictional specific extensions were employed to this international standard with focus on interRAI data.

• 2014 - Momentum development of two interoperability web-services per the HISO 10047 HL7-CDA standard for interRAI®
• PDF reports for interRAI® assessments, care plans, and other miscellaneous reports
• HL7-CDA for interRAI® assessment data

Interoperability - The New Zealand Experience • Advantages and Benefits of HL7-CDA
• Tech is simple • HL7-CDA is a international standard and allows for structured data to be made available easily. XML based thus very friendly
for web-services.
• interRAI® assessment data is structured and standardized (iCODES)
• The development of interoperability web-services based on the HL7-CDA standard in order to provide or request assessment data was EASY
• Provides the flexibility to produce reports, display data, and even complete analysis of interRAI® data within the providers system!
• Most important! Work with your providers and users – Educate on interRAI® methodology. Find out what data they need to see and how/where they want to see it in their system?

• 384,000 assessment to date
• 15% of 65+ age group assessed annually
