For the first time in 2012, the number of newly arrived international students in Canada exceeded 100,000

In August 2012, a Government panel recommended Canada double its international students by 2022

In April 2013 strike action by Canadian visa officers expanded to 15 biggest markets

Longest-running public service workers’ strike in Canadian history, affecting almost 100,000 students & forced students to consider other destinations

Estimated to have cost almost CDN $1 billion, with tourism & higher education hit hardest

By early July 2013 one major Russian agency had already lost 50 students due to visa delays

UK govt growth strategy targeting “realistic” 15-20% growth in international HE student no's in next 5 years

Are these targets at odds with recently more restrictive UK immigration policy & with continuing debate over UK immigration targets?

Challenges: negative perceptions of visa changes + unfavourable post-study work rights compared to competitor destinations

Page 42: What in the world is happening?

Perceptions drive student / parent choices & agent preferences. StudyGoldCoast needs to change student & agent perceptions to secure a larger market share

1st language communications & personal interactions via seminars, training at agent workshops & during agent FAM tours can be effective ways to achieve this

Market Australia first, then the Gold Coast, then your institution

Receiving students is one thing. Graduating brand advocates is another. High quality student support services are critical, via schools + the wider community.

Institutions should not get on the starting blocks until they are ready. You won’t get a second chance to make a good first impression with agents.

Australia is a very agent dependent market. Engage with more agents.

The Gold Coast is a world class study destination. Go out and tell the world !! Recommendations for StudyGoldCoastRecommendations for StudyGoldCoast
