What exactly is a podcast ?

• Podcast is a great new word derived from “iPod” and “broadcast”

• Podcasts are usually multimedia presentations that happen in series or episodes using feeds like RSS feeds-handy little things, feeds.

Feeds allow material to be updated frequently and distributed to a subscribed audience. Reduces work for the creators.

• Like your own little, personal, radio or tv series.• They cover any topic and are usually fairly easy to make, usually

free to obtain.• If you have any mobile device, you can make or listen to a

podcast

Ways for Teachers to Use Podcasts

1. Teachers can go out on the Web and find math or other content area classes in places like iTunesU to professionally develop their own knowledge to bring to students

Why Use Podcasts to Demonstrate?

• Podcasts go hand in hand with other Web 2.0 tools, like blogs, to extend student learning

• Podcasts can be stopped and replayed over and over by students.• Instructor has complete control over where and when to stop to expand or

explain a concept

• It’s motivating and inspirational to watch kids teach other kids.

• Sometimes somebody does a better job explaining it than you do.

• Podcasts are wonderful for visually breaking down a concept into discrete steps that can be reviewed or replayed as often as wished.

• They are free!

Page 6: What in Tarnation is A Podcast? By Chris Stegall.

• use podcasts to zero in on particular students who need access to particular material or who may need to take this material at their own pace.

• can add podcasts into a lesson to add interest and novelty.

Why Use Podcasts as a Student Generated Product?

• Like blogs, students can retain their anonymity if they choose but still participate.

• Instructor can assess a student’s grasp of the concept and how well they communicate and understand the procedures.

• Students are working across content areas to produce a podcast. Writing, editing, revising, web technologies, and of course the math

• Podcasts are a great way for kids to display their understanding of math concepts by creating a podcast and sharing their learning

Kids Can Construct Their Own Learning When They Podcast

• Students have an authentic audience-the Web- to share their learning.

• Students who struggle with writing have different opportunities to learn and share when they podcast. This is similar to blogging except it’s heavy on the auditory and visual, not just written.

• Since podcasting is not a skill and drill activity at all, it supports higher end of Bloom’s Taxonomy

And…

• Students are actively engaged in metacognition as it applies to the math concept

• Students apply math vocabulary and language to explain their thoughts.
