bull To make it simple Assume that all works are protected by copyright law

bull You do not have to apply for a specific copyright in order for your work to be protected

bull It is already protected

What can I use in my class

bull There are no specific percentages numbers of words pictures seconds of video nor bars of music subject to copyright exemption

bull In the educational context you must ponder four basic areas before deciding to use non-original works

Purpose

bull Why do you want to use itndash Pro

raquo Teaching research criticism commentary (positive and negative) using to create a new artifact limited access

ndash Conndash Profit Entertainment Omission of credit to author

Nature

bull This is the nature of the work you are considering usingndash Good choices

bull Published works Non-fiction meets educational goals

ndash Poor choicesbull Unpublished workbull Works in the more artistic realm (music drama)

Amount

bull How much of the work are you planning on using

ndash Although there are no firm quantities established by law the more you use the more likely you are to infringe upon the authorrsquos rights

Effect

This is not the effect that the work has upon you or your students but rather the effect upon the economic bottom line of the author

Are you potentially taking away from the sale or profitability of the original work

bull Creative Commons is a site that allows you to present your creative works much like You Tube and other file sharing sites

bull The difference is that artifacts posted on Creative Commons are posted with specific usage limits that you specify

bull Letrsquos see how that works
