This month is the celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. With that in mind, let’s hear from Martin Luther himself, from his “Smalcald Articles.” In the section entitled, “How a Person Is Justified and Concerning Good Works,” he unpacks the very heart of our faith: “I cannot change at all what I have consistently taught about this until now, namely, that ‘through faith’ (as St. Peter says) we receive a different, new, clean heart and that, for the sake of Christ our mediator, God will and does regard us as completely righteous and holy. Although sin in the flesh is still not completely gone or dead, God will nevertheless not count it or consider it.” “Good works follow such faith, renewal, and forgiveness of sin, and whatever in these works is still sinful or imperfect should not even be counted as sin or imperfection, precisely for the sake of this same Christ. Instead, the human creature should be called and should be completely righteous and holy—according to both the person and his or her works—by the pure grace and mercy that have been poured and spread over us in Christ. Therefore we cannot boast about the great merit of our own works, where they are viewed apart from grace and mercy. Rather, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord’ (1 Cor. 1:31; 2 Cor. 10:17). That is, if one has a gracious God, then everything is good. Furthermore, we also say that if good works do not follow, then faith is false and not true.” In short, God’s Word teaches us these foundational truths: · We come into this world as sinners, incapable of believing in or pleasing God; · God is gracious. He placed our sin on Jesus and Jesus’ righteousness on us; · As soon as we believe this, that righteousness is ours; · Even faith to believe this is God’s gift – through the Word and Sacrament of Baptism; · We are NOT “Sinners who sometimes do saintly things;”We ARE “Saints who sometimes do sinful things;” · But God sees ONLY the saint in us – because of Jesus! · Therefore our good works are a result of faith - never a means to reach up to God. “What does this mean?” You don’t have to “forgive yourself” for anything you’ve ever done wrong! God did that already, which is why Jesus cried out from the cross, “IT IS FINISHED!” You don’t have to speculate about where you’re going when you die! If you trust that Jesus paid for your sins, you will go to heaven! “This is most certainly true!”

What Does This MeanThis month is the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation With thatin mind letrsquos hear from Martin Luther himself from his ldquoSmalcald Articlesrdquo In thesection entitled ldquoHow a Person Is Justified and Concerning Good Worksrdquo heunpacks the very heart of our faith

ldquoI cannot change at all what I have consistently taught about this until nownamely that lsquothrough faithrsquo (as St Peter says) we receive a different new cleanheart and that for the sake of Christ our mediator God will and does regard us ascompletely righteous and holy Although sin in the flesh is still not completely goneor dead God will nevertheless not count it or consider itrdquo

ldquoGood works follow such faith renewal and forgiveness of sin and whatever inthese works is still sinful or imperfect should not even be counted as sin orimperfection precisely for the sake of this same Christ Instead the human creatureshould be called and should be completely righteous and holymdashaccording to boththe person and his or her worksmdashby the pure grace and mercy that have beenpoured and spread over us in Christ Therefore we cannot boast about the greatmerit of our own works where they are viewed apart from grace and mercyRather as it is written lsquoLet the one who boasts boast in the Lordrsquo (1 Cor 131 2 Cor1017) That is if one has a gracious God then everything is good Furthermore wealso say that if good works do not follow then faith is false and not truerdquo

In short Godrsquos Word teaches us these foundational truthsmiddot We come into this world as sinners incapable of believing in or pleasing

Godmiddot God is gracious He placed our sin on Jesus and Jesusrsquo righteousness on usmiddot As soon as we believe this that righteousness is oursmiddot Even faith to believe this is Godrsquos gift ndash through the Word and Sacrament

of Baptismmiddot We are NOT ldquoSinners who sometimes do saintly thingsrdquoWe ARE ldquoSaints who

sometimes do sinful thingsrdquomiddot But God sees ONLY the saint in us ndash because of Jesusmiddot Therefore our good works are a result of faith - never a means to reach up

to God

ldquoWhat does this meanrdquo

You donrsquot have to ldquoforgive yourselfrdquo for anything yoursquove ever done wrong God didthat already which is why Jesus cried out from the cross ldquoIT IS FINISHEDrdquo

You donrsquot have to speculate about where yoursquore going when you die If you trustthat Jesus paid for your sins you will go to heaven ldquoThis is most certainly truerdquo

You donrsquot ever have to feel that hardships and suffering are punishment from God He punished Jesus in your placeYes ldquosin happensrdquo and you might be a victim of some pretty awful things but NOT because you werenrsquot ldquogoodrdquoor ldquofaithfulrdquo enough In the end God wins Satan loses

Thank You Lord for restoring the pure Gospel to its rightful place at the very heart of our faith and practice throughYour servant Martin Luther and for those who to this very day believe teach and confess this eternal truth at allcosts All glory to God

Dear Friends in Christ

Well we are off and running on a new school year The kiddos (and

parents) are settling in nicely and enjoying their new routine We are

loving these new preschoolers Every day is an adventure

Our first event of the year the dessert social was a great success We had many

families share in some yummy treats play and fellowship The weather was perfect - praise God As always our

events are designed to get to know one another both parents and children

October has always been a really exciting part of the year especially with the changing of the weather and all the fun

activities One such event is the Fireman Visit This is always a highlight as the students are able to see the fireman

put on his ldquoscaryrdquo uniform and know that he is still just a real person Also seeing and being able to touch the fire truck

up close is pretty exciting Our classes will also visit Valarsquos Pumpkin Patch and the Bellevue Berry Farm These tend

to be favorite field trips For some just riding the big yellow school bus is the best part Our preschool is also

participating in a Food Pantry Drive providing food for the homeless Last year the preschool was able to donate an

astounding 1034 food items Not sure if we are ever going to beat that but we will sure try Our teachers are

attending the Nebraska District All Professional Church Workerrsquos Conference in Lincoln - a great way to learn new

ideas and network with other teachers We also will be holding parentteacher conferences for our older students

as a way to connect with our families Lastly we will have our Fall parties at the end of October which will allow the

kids to wear their costumes play games and of course have yummy fall snacks That is a lot for October

Let me share a few statistics regarding our new preschool population With the best information possible of our 103

currently enrolled students 17 are BSLC members 8 are from other Lutheran congregations 23 are Catholic 24 are

from other Christian congregations and 31 do not have a home church membership We also currently have 32 children

not baptized This gives us a wonderful opportunity to work with a wide variety of students Please keep this group and

our efforts in your prayers Please also pray for our teachers and students and for a very stress-free fun-filled and

Christ blessed preschool year

In His Service

Pam Prazan and the Preschool Staff

ELECTRONIC CHECK-IN NOTES

Thank you families for your patience as we re-adjust to our Planning Center electronic check-in system Whilemany families have info already in the system we do require a new Registration Form to be filled out each yearso be sure you have done so for the 2017-2018 year Here are some other reminders and things to remember

All children from babies to 3rd grade are required to have a pick-up tag to pick them up from the nurseryor their classroom This tag prints right after their name tags so donrsquot walk away before you grab it It willcontain the same ID number as your childrenrsquos tags which change week to week

4th amp 5th grades now have name tags but they do not have pick-up tags Middle and high school check-ins do not print name tags or require a pick-up tag

Planning Center defaults to whatever your most recent check-in was so be sure you are looking overwhich family members you are checking in each week and click the box next to each name to check oruncheck them Also with the new year be sure your child is assigned to the correct age group Teenagersthat check-in in the Student Ministry areas should be sure they are unchecking younger siblings as thosestations do not have printers

Parents are asked to check-in if they are volunteers in the Kids or Student Ministry areas or attending ourParent Connection class Otherwise they are not required to check-in

October Sermon SeriesWhat is right What do we deserve and what do we get Sometimes we find it hard to even forgive ourselves forpast mistakes and sometimes we canrsquot believe that God will forgive us For centuries the church skewed anabusive system of performance salvation Then Martin Luther entered the worldrsquos stage and brought a revolutioncalled the Reformation that brought people back to what life in Christ is alone Reformation is not just something500 years ago Reformation is needed today in our individual lives our families and our churches so that we canbring reformation of life to others What reformation is God leading us toward today

PS Many thanks to our wonderful preschool families again for the numerous Pet Smart gift cards and donations to

continue caring for our pets Feel free to come ldquomeetrdquo them any time (Sascha-turtle Rex-leopard gecko Slick-tree

frog and Sparkles-hamster) Please know that we are extremely thankful and appreciate all the help and donations we

have received

Help Needed

The Preschool is implementing a new program Cash for Students It is a super easy

way for our preschool to earn a little bit of extra money This is what we need from

you ndash your Hy-Vee receipts For every $20000 spent Hy-Vee will donate $100 back

to the preschool Collection boxes will be in the front church office as well as the

preschool office Thatrsquos it Send in those receipts
