If we need the imagination of the w ord, we can do without the imagined word. The imagination of the word, theimagined, the wo rd s being-imagined, its image , is not the (im agined) word. A signifier (in g eneral) m ust be formally recognizable in spite of, and through, the diversity o f em piricalcharacteristics that may mo dify it. It m ust remain the same and be able to be repeated as such , despite andacross the deformations w hich the em pirical event necessarily mak es it undergo. A phonem e or g raphem e isnecessarily always to so me extent different each time that it is presented in an operation or a perception. But itcan fu nction as a sign, and in general as language, only ira formal identity enables it to be issued again and to b erecognized.
