WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A SEED?
•Nourishment: The seed provides food for the young plant while it is developing the parts it needs to make its own food.• Seed Dispersal: The design of the seed helps the seed travel to other places to germinate.

PART 2STRUCTURES OF
A PLANT
![Page 10: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
ROOTS
Functions Keep the plants
in place Absorbs water
and nutrients from the soil
Some roots help the plant by storing food.
![Page 11: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
TYPES OF ROOTSTaproots• Large• Grow deep into the soil.• Are able to store food.
Fibrous Roots • Thin and stringy• Lie close to the surface• Can often be found
growing side by side with taproots.
Adventitious Roots
• Strong and can be thin or thick.
• Develop to help the plant climb
• Found in ivies and vines
![Page 12: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
STEM
Functions: Supports the plant
and gives them shape.
Contain small tubes: Xylem carries water
and minerals from the roots
Phloem: carries food that is made in the leaf to the rest of the plants.
![Page 13: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
LEAVES
Where plants make their own food in a process called photosynthesis.
Many kinds of leaves Needles Broad Leaves
![Page 14: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
NEEDLES Found on most
conifers and cacti.
They do not shed their needles in the Fall.
Their shape helps prevent water loss.
![Page 15: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
BROAD LEAVES
Leaves can be found in all shapes and sizes based on their environment.
In cold climates plants shed their leaves because there is less sunlight for photosynthesis to take place and the plant needs to save its energy.
![Page 16: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Leaves are the factory of the plant where food is made in a process called photosynthesis.
![Page 17: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS?
A process plants use to make their own food
Plants’ leaves contain chlorophyll
Chlorophyll (green color) makes photosynthesis possible
![Page 18: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
THE CHLOROPHYLL ABSORBS AND TRAPS THE SUNLIGHT OR ENERGY FROM THE SUN.
![Page 19: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
•THE SUNLIGHT IS COMBINED WITH WATER AND NUTRIENTS FROM THE SOIL THAT HAS BEEN ABSORBED BY THE ROOTS.
•CARBON DIOXIDE EXHALED BY ANIMALS IS ALSO ABSORBED BY THE LEAVES

Oxygen
When the process of photosynthesis is complete, the plant has made 2 things.:
Sugar : The food the plant has made for itselfOxygen: A waste that is released by the plant
that we need to survive.
![Page 22: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Animals and plants need each other to survive.
•Plants give animals oxygen to breath and live. •We give plants carbon dioxide to make food.
![Page 23: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
TRANSPIRATION ALSO TAKES PLACE IN THE LEAVES OF A PLANT
What is transpiration?
Water is absorbed from the roots of a plant and travels to the leaf.
The sun heats the water in the leaf turning the water from a liquid to a gas called water vapor
The water is released into the air through tiny holes called stomata

FLOWER
What is the function of the flower in a plant? Attract insects and
animals using bright colors and wonderful scents.
Produce or make the fruit and seeds of the plant

STAMEN
The stamen is the part of the flower that makes pollen.
Pollen is fine powder needed for pollination.
![Page 27: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
PISTIL
Pistil
The pistil is made up of 3 main parts: •Stigma Collects pollen
•StyleSeparates the stigma from the ovary
•OvaryWhere the fruit/seeds form.
![Page 28: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
POLLINATION
http://videos.howstuffworks.com/hsw/9756-our-flowering-world-flower-parts-video.htm
What is pollination?
Pollination is how seeds are formed to create a new plant.
Pollination occurs when pollen from the anther on the top of the
stamen is carried to the stigma on the top of the pistil.
The pollen travels down the pistil through the style to the ovary
There the pollen fertilizes an ovule and a new fruit/seed is formed
![Page 29: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)

CAN YOU PUT THE PICTURES IN ORDER TO SHOW THE LIFE CYCLE OF A SEED PLANT
Teachers' Domain: Life Cycle of a Seed Plant
![Page 31: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
SOME PLANTS USE SPORES TO REPRODUCE
What are spores? Spores are tiny, seed
like spots on the underside of certain plants like ferns.
Spores contain stored food and will fall of the plant and germinate(grow)if the conditions around them are right.
![Page 32: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS PLANTS CAN REPRODUCE
Bulbs A type of bud that
grows underground. Tulips grow from a bulb.
Runners Some plants can grow
from the stem of an older plant. A spider plant can reproduce this way.
![Page 33: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS PLANTS CAN REPRODUCE
Grafting Combining two
different plants to create a new and better plant. You can attach one apple tree to the trunk of another apple tree to make a better tasting apple
![Page 34: What do you think these are pictures of?. Where can you find seeds? In our food In our backyards.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110323/56649d845503460f94a6aeb4/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS PLANTS CAN REPRODUCE
Tubers Are swollen
underground stems.
We often eat them.
Tubers develop “eyes” that will develop into a new plant.
