I’m the Speaker. My main job is to keep order and tell MPs when it is their turn to speak. I am not allowed to take sides.

I’m the Prime Minister. My main job is to run the Government which means making decisions about how the country is run. I have to answer difficult questions from other MPs about how I’m running the

country.

I’m Leader of the Opposition. My job is to challenge the Government when they do

things my party does not agree with.

I’m the Serjeant at Arms. My main responsibility is security and keeping order in

the House of Commons. I get to carry the mace in and out of the House and wear a sword!

Is the House of Commons always serious?

In the House of Commons Members of Parliament (MPs) debate important issues that affect our country and put forward ideas for new laws (bills).

Sometimes arguments start and the Speaker has to step in to calm the debate.

But, this doesn’t mean it’s really serious all the time. Quite often the two sides will try to make the other look bad by making jokes at their expense as seen many times in the next video clip…
