What are the KS2 SATs?

SATs or Standard Assessment Tests are national tests for 10/11 year olds at the end of Key Stage 2.

The tests are intended to show if your child is working at, above or below the target level for their age.

The target for all children of this age is level 4b.

Key Stage 2 tests for 10/11 year olds include:

English •Comprehension test-1 hour long.•Writing-teacher assessed tasks.•Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test-further details available in the Autumn Term.

Maths•Two 45 minute tests. •Mental Maths-test of 20 questions.

Science•Teacher assessment using investigation and knowledge evidence.

English Comprehension

Pupils have one hour to read and answer questions based on a series of texts - Fiction and non-fiction texts included.

These vary in the responses pupils are expected to make:

•Multiple choice answers to circle•Tick answers•Matching statements with lines•One word answers•Short line answers•Longer answers with several lines

English Writing

Pupils’ writing will be continually assessed throughout the year. This will include examples of fiction and non-fiction writing.

Fiction: stories, playscripts.

Non-fiction: instructions, non-chronological reports, explanations, recounts, persuasion.

Tasks will sometimes be long which involves pupils writing independently for 45 minutes including planning time. There will also be short writing tasks for 20 minutes including planning time.

Writing will also be cross-curricular, including subjects such as History, Geography, Science, RE.

Maths

There are two 45 minute tests.

Paper A and B are non-calculator tests. The questions start at level 3 and increase in difficulty up to level 5, which are found at the end of the test.

The Mental Maths test requires pupils to respond quickly to questions read out to them. The first five questions allow a 5 second response, the next ten allow a 10 second response and the last five allow a 15 second response. Questions progress throughout in their level of difficulty.

Science

Science skills are teacher assessed throughout the year.

Pupils will carry out independent investigations.

Knowledge of different areas in Science will be tested such as:

•Animals and plants•Materials and their properties•Forces•Sound•Human body•Electricity•Light

Level 6

For pupils working beyond level 5, there are level 6 tests available in both Maths and English.

Maths: two 50 minute tests. Paper A non-calculator and Paper B calculator.

English comprehension test: 1 hour long, 10 minutes reading time and 50 minutes to answer questions.

English writing test: long and short writing task. 1 hour to complete both tasks.Short task: 20 minutes.Long task: 40 minutes including 5 minutes planning time.
